I have an Nec 3520a and Benq 1620. Both are good drives but I found some media yields better results in the Nec while other media yields better results in the Benq. My opinion is based on feedback from people that have asked me to burn discs.

Interesting note on their "free shipping":
The shipment of orders to certain remote locations, with postal codes starting with the following: (A0A-A9Z, B0A-B9Z, C0A-C9Z, E0A-E9Z, G0B-G0L, G0T-G0W, G3L-G4Z, J0M-J0M, J9E-J9E, J9K-J9Z, T0A-T0B, T0E-T1X, T6W-T7W, T8P-T8Z, T9G-T9Z, V0A-V0L, V0N-V1L, V1N-V2V, V3G-V3G, V8A-V8K, V9G-V9Z, X0A - X9Z, Y0A - Y9Z), or items over 60lbs are excluded from this offer. In these instances, a shipping and handling fee will be visible using the shipping calculator and will be added to your order during the checkout process.
So according to TD, the whole Province of New Brunswick is remote!! WTF.

I ordered one with the ADS enclosure. Paid 63$. I've emailed TD to see if I could get a price adjustment.
The Nero CD cannot be read by the drive, so install the software before swapping drives. I've tested 2 Nero CDs shipped with these drives and both were garbage!

I just test and free shiping is still working.
You have to go by http://www.tigerdirect.ca/freestar/index-page.asp?SRCCODE=FREESHIP
Click on Start Shopping!
And then search for ND3540A.
If you use the link given above, it will not work: No tax and 12,xx$ of shiping

Yes it works but only for ON and I guess parts of Quebec etc. NB shipping is still $12 odd dollars. Looks like I will have to file some sort of a complaint. You cannot declare a whole province as remote. That is weird.

Even for ON, at first checkout screen it shows 0 shipping and tax, but after I get past the 2nd checkout screen where you enter your info, it shows shippihn and tax and a $71 total.

well, to say the least, ... there are still LOTS of ppl out there that are uninformed about "which DVD burner is the best" ... and in fact, some ppl are just the "brand-geared" ppl like "sony-fan-boys" who'll only buy sony products... ;)
so maybe he pref'ed Sony...
btw, u should've told ur friend that it was just a rebadged liteon drive... nothing too amazing....

The funny thing is that Sony switched mfg's again, the new DRU-810A is a rebadged BenQ DW1640.
They're really trying hard to improve the reputation of their optical drive offer since they stopped making their own DVD writers, which were complete garbage. It doesn't matter that they now offer one of the best DVD writer though, it's still overpriced.

So install NERO BEFORE swapping drives

Both of my DVD burners are NEC - 1300A (4x) and 3520A (16x) and they have been serving me very well over the past few years. One thing tho, I only use reasonably good quality discs. The lowest-end discs that I used was AN31. They burned @ 4x on 1300A with latest FW.

interesting .... the DRU810A is a rebadged BenQdw1640? where'd u get that (insider) info from??? ;)
AFAIK, i think all of previous sony dvd burners are rebadge Lite-Ons.... and yes they're complete garbage compared to benq ....
and actually, if stooples 150% PM still existed, well when the sony DRU810A comes out at a sale price at FS/BB, it would be possible to get it PM'ed at a somewhat reasonable retail price.... :).... (there were prev. PM deals on the dru720A and dru800A when stooples still had 150% in the past but almost no1 was interested b/c they knew it was just rebadged Lite-On drives  )
but of course since stooples is now 110% PM, nothin too interesting to PM now....

LiteOn drives are DVD writer hackers wet dreams, but pretty useless to normal user. How could I re-phrase that... humm, if you need to burn DVDs, stay away from these ;). Before using LiteOn drives, Sony first drives were actually their own make. Their crappiness turned Sony entry in a total fiasco and killed their chance at grasping a sizable share of the market. They may also have licensed or partially licensed Philips hardware at one point, IIRC. The point is they failed to produce a viable writer on their own which is pretty pathetic when you consider Sony innovation past and current research and development resources.
Back on topic, this is a good deal considering the free shipping, but it's also true Nec drives need to be fed quality media to really shine. On the other hand the Nec 3540a already has a few hacked firmware available while the BenQ hasn't (yet) and is not such a great slow (2x/2,4x) burner apparently. If ncix had a free shipping promo I'd proly choose the DW1640 though, simply because there's very little complaints from users.

guys i just bought this from ncix.
i am SOOOO disappointed with it. I can never achieve anywhere near the right burn speeds. It's terrible with ritek media.. burning most 8X at 4 or 6X. I've got 16X prodisc. Out of 10 writes, i've achieved 16X (max speed now) only twice.
GET THE NEW PIONEER!!!!!!! it's the 110 or whatever. Stay clear of this!

Tons of people are in love with the BenQ 1640. 3 years ago people were gaga over LiteOn CD burners - you don't hear much about them now although they're still around. I can't go for BenQ because like LiteOn then, despite offering numerous additional features in their drives, was an unknown quantity when it comes to reliability/durability. Convince me otherwise and maybe I'll bite.
