Planescape Torment for the PC is my favourite RPG
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (PC) is probably runner up
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II (PC) is good, except the ending
is horrible
NeverWinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark (PC) was very good
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (PC) gets an honorouble mention,
but the ending was also lame

PS2 - Shadow Hearts (Covenant is supposed to be leaps better, haven't tried it yet)

Final Fantasy II/IV. First RPG I played was Final Fantasy I but I got up to the Marsh Cave before I gave up.
Oh and they're remaking (sorta) FFIV for GBA like they did with Dawn of Souls. Giving the graphics a slight makeover, adding extra dungeons, and extra story cutscenes. It comes out this December in Japan. Kinda odd that they'd bring it out and put it on the GBA before they finished the port of FFIIIj to DS.

Well it could be that I didn't try the game til a few months ago. I didn't mind the graphics and all because I did play fallout2 and i liked it. I just found planetscape torment really boring. It's like oh so what you're this sort of dead dude and if you die you can't really die! wow. Also theres some woman that somehow you must have had some part in her wrong doing oooo grand conspiracy. I played a few hours of it and I got a headache and I was bored. I don't consider myself to be impatient with games either, for gods sake i played through lionheart...

This is true, the hard "Marsh Cave" dungeon early in the game is one of the hardest parts of any RPG I've played. And even for experienced players, Chaos, the end boss could sometimes kill your entire party if he got lucky with a spell.

Golden Sun 1&2 for GBA was the best so far...
other great RPG's include:
- Chrono Trigger
- Zelda: A Link To The Past
- Zelda: Ocarina of Time
This thread is great since I'm looking for some new RPG's to play. I wish FF7 was on PSP. I played it years ago, got near the end of disc 1, then didn't have time to play for months so I just kind of let it go. I'd like to play again, but I have no time for lengthy console games (only portable ones).

Yea I agree
#1 battles were slow turn by turn and you had to pick the enemy beforehand, or else you'd kill it too fast but your team would still target it. I say bring that back in the new RPGs'. Give these little kids a reason to cry instead of button mashing their way thru boss battles.
#2 item buying was so tedius it was a pain in the ass to buy recovery items without spending an hour with a turbo controller ;)
#3 Horribly unbalanced.. think back how many times did a Crazy Pony encounter end your game on your way to the 2nd town!?
I will say that the "level up penninsula" was the best thing ever, in any game. Every game should have a super small hidden place for people to level up insanely, early in the game.
I'm still playing Suikoden I for the first time, its pretty amazing, I cannot believe I overlooked it! i find the battles run really slowly though, its sooooooo tedious at times. Until I got the perfectionist rune (No more weak enemies, PAH!)

Planescape Torment did not sell that well, but it is fondly remembered (a lot of hardcore fans over at Obsidian Ent boards). Thing is most of those critics, are huge gamers. I found a lot of aspects of KoToRII were similar (but worse). Same dev worked on both games . . .
a writeup from 2004
http://www.firingsquad.com/print_article.asp?current_section=Games&fs_article_id=1443
"Planescape
Planescape: Torment is the best RPG released on the PC, along with Knights of the Old Republic. However, it came three years before Knights and it's a testament to Torment's design that after those three very long years, it's still good enough to stand toe-to-toe with BioWare's latest. Unfortunately, Torment is also one of the most obscure and unpopular games, the one nobody picked up. "It's like Baldur's Gate, but a weird setting", "You can't design your party", and "That perspective makes it look too much like Diablo" are all common complaints. That it was released almost completely after Christmas didn't help much, either. Yet, like Master of Magic, another game almost no one played, we all like to say we played Torment.
Torment was ahead of its time, but unlike Allegiance, not in a bad way. One of the greatest compliments I can pay to the Black Isle team that developed it is that they out-BioWared BioWare. As good as Baldur's Gate II is, few who've played both games can say that it's the better game. Yes, the combat is better. Yes, it sold better. It had multiplayer too, and a great expansion pack. But Torment had the best story of any game, ever. "Flaws" like pre-built characters were strengths as you played the game and discovered the mystery behind the Nameless One and his strange relationship to the floating skull, Morte.
The mystery and the character developments were interwoven with each other and the game world. Even the famed Ultimas (many of which could rightfully argue their spots onto this list) didn't feel as complete to me as Torment. Oh sure, they had their day and night cycles, and NPCs had schedules, but Torment was so clearly a labor of love, filled with painstaking detail. True, it lacked many of the cooler features of Baldur's Gate II, like getting a fortress for your character or the millions of sidequests with their cool gear, but Torment was more focused and delivered a far better story.
It's almost as if it was half adventure game, half RPG. Adventure game is almost a dirty word nowadays, conjuring up images of cheap, tricky puzzles and corny dialogue, but the way Torment pulled it off, it worked. If you've played Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Up until KOTOR, Torment was without comparison. In fact, the similarities of story development and style between the two are more striking than the differences in game mechanics and setting.
I have little doubt that Planescape: Torment influenced the design of Knights of the Old Republic, consciously or not. Or perhaps the designers naturally moved onto the logical next step, the best ideas, all the things they couldn't do in Baldur's Gate I and II - and those happened to be the same ones as in Torment.
Planescape: Torment is Number Four on FiringSquad's Best Singleplayer Games of All Time for being the best RPG, bar none. If Knights had been released earlier it might hold that position, but it'd be a gamble I wouldn't want to place bets on."

Did anyone who loves Morrowind play Daggerfall?
The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind is actually the 3rd game in the series. Released 2002. Unless I've forgotten it was released simultaneously on the PC and XBox.
1st: TES: Arena - Released 1994 on the PC
2nd: TES: Daggerfall - Released 1996 on the PC
Someone please correct me if these release dates are wrong.
Daggerfall was very much the precursor to Morrowind, and some old school gamers claim it offers more freedom that Morrowind. I played it briefly but couldn't get into it. The game was wildly ambitious but very buggy. It was made back in the DOS days, one of the last couple of years before all games were DirectX Win9X based. The technology couldn't support the ambitions of the game. It didn't sell well and was blasted for the bugs, but it came 6 years before Morrowind and really was the trial run for that game. I didn't play Arena so I can't comment there.
The 4th game in the series is of course TES: Oblivion. From my understanding it is going to be released on the 360 and PS3. Not sure about a PC release, perhaps later. I'm not sure if it will be ready for the 360 launch or if it's been pushed back until past Christmas. It's really the only first gen 360 game I care much about now. As for the PS3 version, if what i heard is correct it will be a PS3 launch title, although by then the excitement will probably be gone as it doesn't look like the PS3 is going to hit the US market before Fall 06 at earliest.
Anyways, I have a few wishes for Oblivion:
-all lines voice acted - reading muddy text from literally thousands of characters in Morrowind got to me. Even if they have to refuse the same voices, cool with me.
-improved graphics-from the screenshots, looks like my wish has been granted
-more complex character attribute upgrades - in Morrowind if you kept jumping or swinging your sword aimlessly, your attributes would increase - lame!
Anyways, I am psyched about this game and it's really one of the key reasons I preordered a 360. If done right this game could be on the best RPGs of all time, and the best free form, non linear RPG yet.
As for all time great old school RPGs, did anyone play through Dragon Warrior 2 for NES (released 1990 or 91)? That was a hard, hard game, but I loved it. I never played 3 or 4, or the later PS1 version.

Oblivion looks like it will do more than "push the envelope" in graphics when it comes out (most likely, it will set the envelope on fire) but it remains to be seen if the gameplay and "RPG-ness" of it will be as well-developed as the next-gen graphics engine it's using...
I'll probably get it anyways ;) Although I didn't finish Morrowind yet

I mentioned Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is my favourite RPG of all time. There are definite reasons for this that developers could learn from.
Keep in mind that back in the day, 12 years ago or so when I was a young teen I could spend hours playing the classic RPGs on the NES and the SNES. I skipped the PS1 era and when many of the Bioware classics were released (BG1, Torment, BG2) I was too busy with school and not into games. Maybe someday I'll get around to those classics.
Nowadays I can spend a couple of hours every few days on a good RPG.
Here's what KOTOR does right:
1. Every line voice acted-in 2003 this was revolutionary - Other developers, please imitate this - Reading lines of text on a TV screen is getting very stale
2. Gets out of the swords and sorcery world that 95% of RPGs are still stuck in. In the future, how about a new cyberpunk RPG, that hasn't been done in years. How about an RPG set in present day in some interest context or region? Where is the rule that RPGs have to involve swords and sorcery?
3. Very good use of the license. I learned as much about the Star Wars Universe from this game as I did from the original trilogy.
4. Good plot, with genuine surprising twists - better than the 1st two prequel movies IMHO.
5. Good writing, with some sophisticated adult level humour, without pushing the envelope and becoming tasteless.
6. Good balance between linearity and exploration - I like how I can play this game for 2 hours, explore a given region and *have a sense of progress.* The game lets you explore but never leaves you lost. It's a preference thing but I personally don't have time for games that force you to talk to hundreds of NPCs to figure out what to do next. Morrowind sort of eschews this by being completely free form and having the main quest not matter, but that's a different type of game completely.
7. You can choose between fast real time battles (that can be paused) or the old style turn based deal. CHOICE is key, and in many other RPGs combat is too slow.
8. Just-right difficulty level. I played on the highest setting and was challenged and never frustrated.
9. Good variety of worlds, different scenery. How many RPGs stick you with the same types of caves and fortresses throughout the game? KOTOR sometimes got repetive but rarely.
10. Although simplistic, the morality system allows for a different game experience 2nd time around. It would be good to see this made more sophisticated in the future so it's not always obvious what the 'good' or 'bad' response is.
11. Characters are interesting and compelling - the psychopathic robot comes to mind.
12. Last but not least - multiple satisfying endings.
So that's the reason it's my fave. I have started KOTOR 2 but thus far I find it's a weaker game than it's predessor. Characters are not as interesting or compelling and the planets and bases seem dull. I haven't yet tried Jade Empire.
I encourage you all to examine your fave games and figure out why you love them so much.

I didn't read your message entirely but I noticed you really like having full voice acting, and you also liked Morrowind's free-form nature. Consider giving Gothic 2 a try, since it's probably on the Super-Budget shelf now.
Also, the entire BG series is a "must-play" for any serious computer RPG fan.

Lets see, some of my fav rps...FF6 classic story, n all. FF7+8 were fun too, but I didn't enjoy almost always having to have the main character in your party.
Star ocean on psx was great! Not the story, it was cool, but really I really liked the 2d fighting, star ocean 3 was boringer....I was always doing some link combos n trapping enemies and hurting them so much every second that they would die in sseconds and it was fun, even if i did the same technique mostly.
I'm not a fan of diablo/baldurs gate 2. I wasn't hooked when I first gave it a try, so I gave up. Diablo, i would always be walking clicking...same with baldurs gate. I just wasn't INTO IT!
I know this is for rps, but this can be SORT Of an rpg......because you take role of the character GILLIAN SEED! The game is Snatcher by hideo kojima.
This game was made a long time ago, before mgs on psx but still very good for it's time.
This game I played emulated on the sega saturn. It's pretty much an intereactive cinema game people say. It's one of those games where you have a picture(comic book style) above and a menu on the bottom where you can look, ask, move, use...etc...It's great because you actually feel like your there, i was hooked after the first day and didn't want to sleep. It's short though, so youll want more and there is only one game like this. And there are cutscenes with voice acting and watching the screen. ALso it's not like rpgs like star ocean 3 (like the factory where you go up a building thats 4 floors and its all mazy and it tkaes you about 4 hours because theres so many people to fight. Then you get to the roof and u can't go on the elevator.......they dont tell you you have to go to the first floor in the beginning and take the elevator which was previously locked like the door to the roof to go to the roof )where something is not CLEARLY STATED and is just auto-expected of you and you end up getting lost and lost for hours and all you had to do was a simple thing.

For all those who missed out on the news..and it is old news, but quite historic that Square would give a C&D...do they have anything up their sleeve?
http://www.opcoder.com/projects/chrono/
They also put down a few other sites.. Amazing work was done, Google for more..
...IGN had an entry on their website for a Chrono Trigger Revival for PSP.. but that page no longer exists :-0
There's also talk to have CT included on the Revolution's "virtual console" capability.

Yeah, that really sucks. Some companies don't know how to embrace the communiy like Valve has done.

Yeah, I would also recommend Jade Empire also.
It is a very good game. Kinda glad that bioware took such a risk with this new intellectual property. Even more glad that they are supposedly making 2 more sequels for the xbox360.

In order:
Orge Battle (SNES)
Disgaea (PS2)
FFVI (SNES)
Chrono Trigger (SNES)
Super Mario RPG (SNES)
Currently trying out Magna Carta (PS2). The battle system is weird and complexing.. -.-
btw, I thought Zelda classifies as action/adventure and KH counts as adventure w/ RPG elements. (I guess I am an RPG nerd =\)

I never liked FF7, but I did like the other FF games. I honestly don't see what people see in it (I'm not trying to troll here).
My favorite RPG would be Radiata Stories.
