how do i know if i am getting a beer belly?

i dont think im fat, little chub around the belly but otherwise im quite average, (big build average)

might be coincidence, but a few people (friends, etc) have told me lately im looking ... well, they pretty much said im getting a beer belly.... maybe a little fatter, but beer belly has been the common term.

i am 16, about 6'2" and depending on the scale, 180-200 lbs. i say depending, because on my home scale it says 180, but on the one at the gym, it said 200. regardless, both are consistant in their different weights. my weight hasnt gone up or down in the last.... 6+ months (2-4 lb fluctuations .. average with me) and when i look at my belly it does look a little bigger, but that might be psycoscimatic(sp?)

i dont drink too much eithor. once a week tops, except last week i drank 2 nights in a row (special occasion) but otherwise i'll go get hammered once a week... because im a teenager.

should i be worried? im going to start swimming atleast once a week, hopefully for about an hour at a time. thats unrelated though, i plan on doing so regardless of the source of my belly.

oh, and aswell, i am eating regularly. havnt changed my habits in the last 6+ months considerably.

advice? or am i just worked up over nothing.

You're only 16! This is your time to grow and mature.
I really wouldn't worry about it. Just keep excercising and eating sensibly (cut out or limit junk food and eat more good whole foods). If you want, now is the time to start to learn about nutrition. I'd put my energy into that rather than worrying about a little bit of fat.

You'll be fine... really. :)

*edit* Oh btw- The binge drinking really is not good for you..especially so young. :( And yes, drinks DO pack on alot of calories.

I have a fat gut too.

Im going to start seriously exercising - running and putting up the weights.

But when youre only 16 people dont have a beer belly in that area, its only as you get a bit older.

If you have a good relaxing life its easy to get fat. When I had stress really bad I was much thinner.

Yeah, you're only 16 and probably still growing. I wouldn't worry about it right now.

I'm 20 and starting to worry about it a bit. I'm not a big guy (5'8"-5'9", 150-155 lbs) but don't have as defined a body as I would like. I only drink once or twice a week tops, usually having somewhere from 6-9 drinks a night. I counter the beergut by eating healthier (a lot more veggies and fruits, fast food a couple times a month if that, no salty snacks and soda drinks, etc.) and exercising when I can, although I need to start doing some cardio. An influence on me is my roommate who is a wrestler and has a Brad Pitt-type body.

Better yet, just drink straight liquor instead of beer.

Gotta be straight though?

What's wrong with bi or gay?

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it now. but you are setting the standard (drinking) and building the base body (by not enough exercise) for the probability of a good beer gut in your middle to late twenties. By then, you will be working and not enough time for exercise, etc ... perfect to developing a great set of love handles.

What's the difference between a pot belly and a beer belly or are they the same thing?

Anyone know how to get rid of a pot belly once you get one? (Would more cardio do the trick and change of diet?)

Yup, same thing. To get rid of one... DIET is VERY important, then comes cardio.

One from drinking too much, and one from being a big.

I put on a lot of weight when I was in high school but chose to ignore it for a few years. My daily calorie intake didn't seem to rise but my weight went up to 185 lbs and I was only 5'8".

I went to see my family doctor to make sure that the weight gain wasn't due to a health problem and to seek advice on how to gradually reduce and maintain a healthy body weight.

My doctor recomended lots of cardio and sensible eating. I took up running and dropped a substantial amount of weight.

I agree, it's all an issue of calories and fat.

Gaining weight - i.e a beer belly - a function of the amount of energy (calories) you take in versus the amount of energy you burn. Excess calories in the body are simply stored as fat - and your body stores fat in various places based on genetics. But, as a rule, men typically store fat in their trunk area (stomach) while women tend to store fat in the hips, thighs, and butt.

I'm guessing, most kids his age and weight would need about 3,500 calories a day just to maintain their current weight. The number of calories he actually uses obviously will vary depending on activity level, and weight, so it's just a guess. Remember, a pound of fat is equal to 3,500 calories. In order for him to gain (or lose) a pound, he'll be increasing ( or decrease ) his net intake of calories by this amount - 3,500.

So if it takes 3,500 calories to maintain your weight, and if between eating and working out , your net intake of calories is more than that, for example 4,000 ( an extra 500 a day ), you'll gain a pound in about a week ( 7 x 500 ).

It doesn't take long put pile on calories if you eat junk food.....

Tim's Bagel & cream cheese or muffin - 425 calories
Big Mac, Fries, Drink - 1,500 calories
Subway 12" sub ( cold cuts ) & Juice - 1.100 calories

1 Molson Canadian Beer - 150 calories
1 Can Classic Coke - 150 calories
1 snickers bar - 275 calories

There's nothing wrong with Subway at all - with the right choice, you can get a low fat heathy meal there.

A beer gut - which is fat - is simply excess calories being stored - you either have to burn more calories via exercise or take in fewer calories when eating or do both to get rid of it.

Eating low fat food helps - a gram of carbohydrate or protein is 4 calories while a gram of fat is over twice that , 9 calories.

Yup, same thing. To get rid of one... DIET is VERY important, then comes cardio.

What diet should I follow. Any specifics of how many calories I should eat a day.

What if I want to stay 140 pounds and get rid of the beer belly. Is that possible, or do I have to loose wait to get rid of a beer belly.

Theres's a ' calculator ' in this link to give you some idea of how many calories you should take in each day.
