I have thought of going the pda route + gps addon but I think that I want a dedicated gps unit...

I'm probably going to get a Garmin Rino. It has a built in FRS radio, you can use it to beam your locaion to someone else with a Rino. My wife and I hunt, so it's a good way to keep track of each other.

Big fan of Garmin units.

For hiking/trekking, Garmin GPS60CS
For automotive, Garmin C330

Get from www.GPScity.ca for best prices (no PST also)

And you are right to go with a standalone GPS unit, they are just easier to use.

I guess that I should clarify. This is for automotive use. I am not very good with directions and dont always have access to a computer to print off mapquest.

This one is a joke.

is it worth the extra money to get the c340?? i really have no idea what to look for in a unit.. I am assuming it is in the near $1000 range to purchase one by the time you get accessories and warranties etc... while on the topic what is the failure rate of these units. is an extra warranty generally a good idea?

Is gpscity.ca the way to go or is ebay better?

www.gpscity.ca and its competitor www.gpscentral.ca are two of the highest volume mail order outfits, I would highly recommend them. Both are based in Calgary and are authorized dealers, so I would feel a lot more confident ordering from them than any old ebay seller.

The c340 has a feature that you can buy a optional traffic receiver (http://www.gpscentral.ca/products/garmin/gtm10.htm) module to get broadcasts of traffic delays. I've never used this feature so I can't tell you how well it works. I would say it's not worth it.

These things are very reliable, so no worries about warranties. I've had mine for a couple of years, and it works great.

The c330/340 comes with everything you need, suction mounts, power cable, basically you plug it in and you are good to go. You don't need to buy anything else.

I use my Axim X3i as a GPS and I loved it. I wouldn't leave home (especially other cities) without it. Just make sure you buy a good mouse (receiver). I got a good one, my friend didn't and he hates his.

i want a standalone gps... would like to keep it under $1000 (with taxes/shipping).

it will be used for driving, so something that has as much information available as it pertains to driving. that traffic monitor thing sounds cool but no one really seems to have much information about it.
