I am in Southern Ontario and have Cogeco Cable. Rogers was running the $200 deal, so I called the Windsor Future Shop and they said they had a $150 Cogeco Deal. Not quite as good but still good. Call and find out, and if the credit is less, you can try calling Shaw (or other ISP) and Future Shop and see if they will up it, or give you a second month free. I did not try this, but I had a friend who was successful in getting a second month free by calling Cogeco.

I go without internet service for 3 or 4 months. Never had a problem with doing this for the past 5 or 6 years.

I'm sure most of you are aware of thise but I thought I'd mention it anyway.
If you are on a competing service (like Sympatico) and do not want to switch, call them and tell them what the Roger's Deal is and that you are going to switch. They will most likely offer you a credit that more or less equals the same amount. You end up getting a few months free. When I switched from Sympatico to Cogeco, I called to cancel and they begged me to stay and offered me 3 months free - especially because I had been with them for over 2 years. It doesn't hurt to try!

will it work if you threat to switch to satellite?

bfurtado
Mar 24th, 2003, 09:36 PM
Hmmm, not sure, but I guess that in any situation where the competitor offers a cash deal such as this, the other companies immediately develop a strategy to hold on to its current customers. I do know, however, that smaller ISP's that offer DSL will most likely not be able to compete in this way. A friend of mine with DSL from a local ISP (essentially reselling Bell's DSL line) was not able to 'threaten' leaving for the Rogers $200 offer. I'm sure only national ISP's can afford it.

i thought the $200 offer you receive at futureshop [rogers] and bestbuy [sympatico] is just a gift card for you to use on any purchase. i believe there's also a early cancellation penalty, in the past it was ~$100, not sure how much it will be for this offer. still, if you're thinking about broadband it's a good deal since the savings is front-loaded and you don't have to wait for it to be spread across 4 to 6 month as a credit. pretty smart marketing actually -- either way the retailer is going to keep your money in their till.

Nope; same address I don't move out my house when not attending school. I disconnect non-essential services during the summer months. My Roger's bill go's from $130 a month to about $25. Let's not forget you have to buy a $34.99+tax "starter kit" (100% useless) before you're eligible for the promo.

If you cancel your service before 6 months, they charge $200 to your credit card (which you must supply at the time of signing).

I was not referring to the "1st month free" credit you also get from participating in this promo. I was referring to the usefulness of the starter kit. It contains, IIRC, a CD, a manual and a cardboard insert that takes up a whole lot of space. They should call it a "$34.95 new account setup fee" or something, since what's in the box certainly isn't worth $35.

Okay, this is part where you don't understand, there is no "first month free" promo, the promo is $200/$150 back. You can buy this kit anywhere (i.e. Radio Shack) for $35 and get first month free, but if you call up Rogers (currently anyways) without the serial number from this kit, you do not get the first month free.

If you're saying that you should be able to walk into FS and walk out with with a $200/$150 cert w/o "buying" anything other than sign up with @Rogers, if they did that (not that they do), you'll still be on the hook for $44.95 for the first month (10% on corporate rate or VIP), still cheaper paying the $35 for the kit.

They also play on perception. If you can see something physically for the 35 bucks you paid for then you'll be more satisfied than if they made you pay 35 bucks and you didn't see what it was for. It's sort of like the activation fee cell phone companies charge you.

I was reading over the Cogeco website (the cable provider in my area), and came across this in their user service agreement:
The Customer agrees to pay any additional charge applicable if the Customer exceeds the prescribed usage limits ...

The limits are currently listed as follows:
Standard Package :
5 Gigabyte of uploads and 10 Gigabytes of downloads within one calendar month.

I can't even see any way for a user to check their current usage on the Cogeco website - is this just a bunch of hooey from Cogeco? Do they actually track your usage and charge you? Anyone out there on Cogeco who can comment?

I ask because I'm moving before long. DSL access seems sketchy at best in the new neighbourhood - Bell's online service checker says that the phone line currently connected cannot receive DSL, but checking other ISP websites (such as CUIC.ca and AEI.ca), they claim it CAN get DSL.

So I'm stuck on what to do - get Cogeco ready to go for when I've moved in, or wait and hope the new phone line can get DSL.

Well golly, the promo the FS salesman sold me required the purchase of this kit, whether I wanted to or not. I wasn't aware that it was the purchase of the kit that allowed me to get the 1st month free; the FS salesdrone implied the 1st month free was a part of their $200 promotion.

But whatever...it certainly isn't "1st month free" anyway if you have to pay $35 for it.

http://www.futureshop.ca/marketing/rogersi...&WLBS=fs%2Dweb2 (http://www.futureshop.ca/marketing/rogersinternet/en/terms.asp?logon=&langid=EN&dept=0&WLBS=fs%2Dweb2)

1) By accessing this web site and completing this agreement in any way, you acknowledge and agree with Rogers Cable Inc. (“Rogers) that:

you will schedule a self installation of the Rogers Hi-Speed Internet service (the “Service) within 7 calendar days of today’s date and you will subscribe to the Service for a minimum period of six (6) consecutive months commencing from the date of activation;
if you do not do both of the things set out in (a) above, you will accept a charge of $150 to your Rogers cable account as reimbursement for the used or unused $150 gift certificate issued to you by Future Shop; and
you have received or understand how to access a copy of the Rogers Hi-Speed Internet End User Agreement (“EUA) and you understand that the EUA is an integral part of your agreement with Rogers for the Service.

2) This offer is only available to new subscribers within the Rogers service area. You have the minimum computer requirements for the Service, and you (and any person who shares your residential address) have not been a subscriber to the service in the past 60 days.

3) YOU ACKNOWLEDGE THAT YOU HAVE READ, UNDERSTOOD AND AGREE TO BE BOUND BY THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF THIS AGREEMENT. FOR YOUR REFERENCE YOU MAY PRINT THIS AGREEMENT BY CLICKING THE "PRINT" OPTION AT THE TOP LEFT HAND CORNER OF YOUR BROWSER OR BY USING THE MENU BAR (FILE.. PRINT…). ACCESSING THIS WEB SITE AND COMPLETING THIS AGREEMENT IN ANY WAY CONSTITUTES YOUR ACCEPTANCE OF THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF THIS AGREEMENT.

My question was more along the lines of "Cogeco does not currently provide a system for tracking bandwidth usage, so how can they charge for it?"

Rehan's links show that Cogeco has an online account tool forthcoming for this, unfortunately. I hope DSL becomes available within 6 months in my area! :)

For those where Rogers is not the local cable provider - simply visit the closest FutureShop, they should provide the promotion for the local cable provider. I was in the Mavis/Britannia store tonight. There were no displays, I had to ask about the Rogers deal. First guy had no idea, second guy said yes, the deal is available in store. But my friends still not receiving the second $100 FS GC, and getting a run around by the Rogers CSR. The CSR told her since Jan 1, 2004 they no longer offer $200GC for new sign up, which is totally BS!

Now, I wonder if anyone may still keep a old copy of the FS flyer for the week of Mar 19? (Damn, I have the copy of previous week!)

but when i called Rogers to get my 25% off for 8 months they said i can get either $100 mail in GC or 25% off for 8 months...
so the GC bonus still valid ...but they said you have to wait more than 3 months (12 weeks) to be qualify for Rogers to sending out another $100 GiftCard ....so it would take around 4-5 months to get the giftcard in hand
i think i will call and get the 25% off for the monthly plan for 8 months is much better

A combined (UL+DL) cap of 60GB is due Feb 15, 2005. If you sign up for 5mbit service only to be capped, it really doesn't make sense. While it should be enough for what rogers classifies as 'most people', I assume this will spoil the deal for 'most other people'.

Here is what I make of this.

$200 GC from FS/BB minus $34.99+ tax ($40.24) for starter kit
- Stuck on 6 month contract
You end up getting $159.76 credit to shop at FS/BB

Not bad

If you get a free month out f it as well then it’s a little better

A while back Bell (Sympatico) had a better deal

1 month free and 6 months at $25 (I have heard of a few still getting in on this deal even though it is over)
- Not stuck on any contact
You end saving $165 (now take that $165 and shop where ever or just keep it in your pocket)

Much better

After 5 years of Rogers including their extreme. I am now with Bell and very happy. Constant speed and a lot more reliable (very few down times compared to Rogers) YMMV

My cousin called bell today and mentioned the Rogers deal and they were able to give him the above Bell deal even though it was over. Once again, YMMV

I would only take advantage of this deal once I get full use out of my Bell deal even though I can switch any time since I am not stuck on any contract.

I would rather save money then get a gift certificate and be forced to shop some where I don’t really like.

Rogers is adding caps in the next few weeks, 60GB total up/down. Exceed it once, get a warning. Exceed it twice, get disconnected, call to get it re-connected. Exceed a third time and you're permanently disconnected.

I heard about this from a rogers tech support agent, but there is also info on http://www.rbua.org 's forums

I guess an "announced" cap is better than their "undisclosed" caps of the last 2 years. I'd still be stuck with Rogers if not for a few "connections" with Bell. People in my area still don't have Sympatico and have waited for 2+ years for it (except me ;).)

Make your own deal with Rogers/Bell by calling them and mentioning a competitor. They'll attempt to stop customers from "churning."
