View Full Version : Logitech Harmony 880 remote for $169 (another price drop at Dell!!!!)

This is actually old news. But for all you still looking for the Harmony 880, Dell.ca has it for $209 but you can apply the 15% nonDell peripherals coupon by going through yourshops.ca
http://www.yourshops.ca/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=YourShops/SpecialOffers&RefererPage=Home_TopNav_1126544253045#111633892683 1
After the coupon is entered at checkout (it should show up in the yellow box near the top right after you get to the Dell site from yourshops.ca), the remote will be $178+tax (free shipping)
I suppose there might be an opportunity for PM with BB/FS?
EDIT:
They lowered the price to $199 to match the price in the new flyer. So that means $169.15 +tax
EDIT 2:
They lowered the price to $179.10. So that means $152.xx +tax
EDIT 3: It seems the coupon code for yourshops may not be stackable onto this new price. It only applies the coupon to the regular price

Anyone know if there is a Timer Feature on the 880? Like a macro that you can set a time for the remote to hit the OFF button so all the devices turn off, I have the 659 and its the only thing missing right now..

I test drove one of these a few months ago, and found it worked great with my devices and easy to program/train. But the biggest thing wrong with it was the small pointy buttons on the sides of the display screen (the ones used to pick/control devices)... They were tiny and I kept hitting the neigbouring buttons by accident. Poor design in this area imo. But otherwise a great product (if you have small fingers that is.)
I still may consider getting one at this price though... or wait for the next redesign.

While I love the 880, I thought it might intimidate my wife and guests a little too much, when I found out Harmony had the 520 (looks more like like a regular remote), and it cost 85 bucks at NCIX I jumped on it.
Though I do love that the 880 has a charger cradle, not for the charging, but more for the fact that it creates an official place to put the remote back!
We might have to create our own support thead in the other forums once we get our remotes :)

for online, it should work b/c FS.ca will PM online competitors....
(actually, both FS.ca/FS instore PM online competitors, but some CSRs/MODs might give u the regular BS about "oh, we don't PM unauthorized retailers.. blah blah blah".... etc etc....)

It comes with a docking bay where you are supposed to dock it when you are not using it. That keeps it charged, just have to remember to dock it once a week.

i had this for nearly 2 months. my conclusions with it is that it's a miss and i returned it for a 659, for one simple reason, it has the best button placement.
no matter how advanced and how many benifits the 880 has, it's impossible to use it without looking down at it. i reccomend taking advantage of a major retailer with a return policy and discoving if this remote is for you before you jump on it for nearly $200.

Interesting, as I got a dell holiday flyer in the mail the other day, (must be from all those dell deals in the past) and it lists the 880 as $199, not the $209 quoted. I searched the Dell site, and it only shows the $209 price...
Damn good deal though, even if it was/is a base price of $209

Anyone who would even consider spending that much cash on a remote seriously needs to do a google search for the term "JP1"
Let a 20-40$ remote do anything a harmony can do and more.

I don't think so. I am familiar with JP1 programming. Unless your JP1 remote has programmable softkeys, and activity based operation with smart state, it will never be as easy to use as even the most basic Harmony Remote.
Does your JP1 remote have online-help screens that put the devices back to the correct state if something goes wrong? Didn't think so. Can you program each and every OEM key into your $20 JP1 remote and have proper labels for them? Didn't think so.
Sorry, but JP1 programmability isn't a replacement for the smart features and power of the Harmony remotes.

He got it for cheaper as the remote is actually $209 from Dell less the 15% yourshops.ca coupon which brought it down to $177. He basically lost out on the airmiles to get it for cheaper at $165.42. I guess it depends on how much value you place on airmiles. Plus he got it right away and it's probably much easier for him to return the remote to FS if he doesn't like it. Mine says Nov. 21 as the estimated shipment date. :(

Dell sells it for $209 - 15% off = $177.65 + tax.
I PM'ed Future Shop for $165.42 + tax.
I saved $12.23 + tax. Going through yourshops.ca gets you an additional 14-15 Air Miles depending on your sales tax rate (plus 50 bonus miles for your first purchase, but I've already done that earlier). I will always choose $12.23 + tax in cash than get an extra 14 Air Miles.
14 Air Miles (or even 64 Air Miles if this is your first yourshops.ca purchase) is worth less than the cash savings.
I'd tell you how nice the 880 is, but it's charging up right now. :)

The 520 is nicely laid out, but it's not nearly going to as nice to use as the high end Harmony remotes just because it doesn't have same number of soft keys and screen space.
I have a 688 and upgraded to the 880, and because the screen is larger and it has 8 soft keys, the labels are not chopped off and it shows more functions so you can put most common function on the first page. That to me made it worth it. It may not seem like a big deal, but it just adds that something extra that makes me like it so much more. The 659's labels in the screen don't hold very many characters before it gets chopped off.

OK, I got the thing programmed, it took a while to get it to the way I wanted.
Programming it is a lot faster than any other universal remote, but it WILL take you a while if you want to tweak it to perfection. The problems with all Harmony remotes is that it loads a lot of codes that may not apply to your exact device, even if the database matches your model exactly. So a bit of my time was spend removing soft keys that didn't make sense for my device, and moving some of the assignments that I thought made more sense (for example, I mapped the "Back" code to the "Exit" button for my media center, whereas the default programming left the Exit button unassigned.
Also, the Web wizard that sets up your device may not make use of the discrete codes available. So when you add all your devices, look at the codes to see if there are discrete codes (Power ON, Power Off), and then customize the power options for that device to use the discrete code, otherwise the remote may default to using the toggle which is less desirable. Also, here you can also tell the configurator to leave certain devices on so that it doesn't try to power manage it (like your cable box/PVR).
Some of the keys keys are indeed small, but I don't find it to be an issue. Yes you have to look at the remote sometimes to find the key, but I like the fact that it lights up if you shake it. The only other issue is that the dock is sensitive to how you place the remote in it....sometimes you have to reposition the remote to get it charging.
The remote is quite nice otherwise. The wife got the hang of it fairly fast which is the ultimate test. It feels slick. I think this is a keeper.

I told them that it wasn't a Dell special, it was a 15% off coupon from YourShops.ca. Then they said that since I came through the yourshops.ca website they would not match the new price even though I could still buy one at the new price. Told me some garbage about third party prices on their website.
I can't return it either since I'd have to pay shipping and possibly a 15% restocking fee to return the original and buy a new one.

I hear you and can sympathize. I called Dell and told them they sent me a catalog with a price of $199 for the remote, and that the catalog said online or via phone. However, the online price was $209. They said that the two were different and that they would pass me to someone who may be able to fix the problem. All they did was pass me to an order desk. However, maybe my call did trigger something to change the online price. All I can hope is that I made a difference. In this case I did, I got you and several others mad ! I did however mention this catalog discrepency earlier in this thread.
I cancelled my order as it hadn't shipped yet and ordered a new one at the better price. It's all timing on these deals more than anything. Right place at the right time, however, I would hope a web store would at least offer price protection in this case.

Just an fyi for the Ottawa folks. I went to FS and BB on Merivale this evening to try a PM. FS only had a returned unit in stock for $239.99. BB had one 880 in stock and they wouldn't PM. Lowest they would go was $249. Started quoting garbage about not knowing what Dell's return policy was, shipping costs and even went so far to ask me if it the price was in USD. I showed them everything but they still wouldn't budge. Oh well, I guess I'll have to wait until Dell ships my order.
Kanata had two 880's in stock but I didn't have time to ask whether they'd do a PM.

It will work as long as you sit on the couch underneath your projector.

Excellent price for the remote, but the only complaint I have is the programming "website" that you have to use. It's sometimes slow, and it takes a while to send all the codes to the remote. I'm not sure if they still use the same method to program the 880, but that was 658 that I was playing with and found that to be the most unpleasant part of it all.
But after it's all said and done, I wouldn't go without it, if you have more than 2 devices to turn on to watch a movie or something.
Now only if I can get my annoying housemate to get off my back on buying this, keeps on saying "it's 1/2 price, come on get it". I know it's a good deal, but come on, it may not be the 880, but got one already. I guess he's trying to get to me, since I pick up all the good deals from RFD, and in his mind it's a waste of money.

Holy Crap! I don't usually post but I am so pumped about the deal I just got on this that I had to share!! PM at FS for $152.58 - came to $175.47 with tax PLUS I had a coupon for $25 off with a min $150 purchase on my FS credit card which brings my total price all in to $150.47!! The only thing that could make this deal even better would be in FS would let me pay the credit card bill using the 20% off gift cards. Does anyone know if FS allows this - I called the Kitchener store earlier today and the girl said they accept anything except for credit cards for account payments but today when my wife asked at customer service in the Cambridge store they said you couldn't do it...
I was surprised at how cool they were about the PM - the girl had to check with the manager because of such a big price match and at first he thought the print out was from US Dell website but it clearly said "for Canadian customers only" or something at the bottom so he just told the girl to go ahead and do it - no attitude whatsoever!! I was pleasantly surprised!!

Good work to all those who got the PM at FS....I'm surprised so many people had no problems.
Personally going to PM things at FS with their nearly arbitrary PM policy is like pulling teeth, something I'd rather avoid in general.
Anyways, I'm quite happy with this remote after hours configuring it. Any of my other nitpicks I'm hoping they will fix in later firmware updates...but for the most part, it's the best remote I've owned....and I've dropped a good bundle on various high end remotes before.

Just got back from FS in Calgary and managed to PM this.
Got it for $166.99 after GST. It was more or less hassle free, but had to wait a little bit while they confirmed it on the Dell site and punched in the code for the 15% off.
Going to test this remote out soon.. can't wait to store away my current 7 remotes for this one.

After getting by the vultureous salesperson who grabbed my package when I was lining up at the cashiers (not that he helped me at all, he just wanted commission which he wasn't about to get), going through the bs about how its an US site, then about how its not the Harmony 880 (he goes and gives me the Harmony 659), then how they do not match Dell at all, then how he thinks I had a fake print out (until I showed him on their computer system), then how Dell isn't an authorized retailer, then going through all his FAKE sales managers who weren't really sales managers, just his friends, and even one guy who said "WTF, I'm not even in your department". He hid that package, so I had to go grab the last one left, went to the cashier, and when I got to the front, just one quick question to make sure its not a US site, then she asked the sales manager lady, she approved, not really happy, but off I went. $156.07 before taxes. What a waste of time though, still don't believe he snatched the package from me while I was in line. Reminds me of this time when the salesman was faking that he was talking to the competitor's store saying that they didn't have it in stock, and when I made him go on speaker phone, the guy on the other end was like, "why do you keep on saying I don't have stock when I keep on saying I do?"
Argh.
Anyways, thanks for the deal. Now I need a deal on Advil.

Good job to everyone who bought a remote.
I'm surprised Future Shop's salespeople give such a hassle for PMs unless they don't get commission once a PM occurs. If they make their 0.5% or whatever commission on any sale, you'd think they'd try to sell as much product no matter what transpires.

Great remote. I paid apparently about $15 more than the latest price (ugh this deal keeps getting better) but still worth it.
Setup was hassle free and its unbelievable how much more convenient it is just to have one remote with macro than it is to use 3 with no macros.
Still the buttons are small and hard to press (for my big clumsy fingers) but since i am not much of a flicker so its not that big a deal!

Was anyone actually able to apply the coupon and get the $152.xx price?

haha, the reason you picked one up without problem is that I did all the legwork this morning. First of all the salesperson said they don't PM dell.ca, then I showed him that they do. Then he told me yourshops.ca can't be PM'ed, then I explained that it is still being ordered from dell.ca. After I had settled all those objections he told me it was against their policy to PM if the item is below cost. I asked him to show me where it said that? He couldn't, so he finally agreed to get the manager. The manager spouted some crap about dell charging shippind so they would have to adjust the price to include shipping as well. I explained it is free shipping on this item. Finally the manager agreed to only match the price and then once again I had to explain that they have a 110% price match policy. Finally got the PM put through for 152 something plus tax. Total time about 40 minutes....and uh, you're welcome! :D

So you just point it in the general direction of your home theater, and all the devices that are programmed will turn on with one click and certain ones will turn off according to how you have it programmed?

I'm saying you still have to point it in the right direction to have some things pick it up. My TV seems to not care which direction I'm pointing it but my receiver seems to be more picky about which direction the remote is pointing at.
In your case, I'd try to buy from FS PM'ed in case you need to return it for your situation.

I want to be able to program some of the lower grey buttons on the 880 to run various PVR functions for my 5800 PVR. I tried to Bestbuy to PM and this is what happened.
1.The guy said he wouldn't because Dell didn't have stock. So I showed them they had stock.
2. Then a large group of sales people gathered and they wanted blood. The battle ensued. Uh Sir, we don't match Dell because they don't have a store. Uh, but I said they have kiosk in the malls. Well Sir they don't stock anything. Then another sales person said How can we match such a lo price..this isn't what our PM was for. Well they gave in and said they would match, but they would add the charge for 2nd day shipping.
3. Well I went and bought one from Dell. I don't balme them for the fight, they should just get their story straight. I am sure there is a law suit in all of this.
PS: My wife has a patient from Dell and was told that another 10days of Dell are on the way. :cheesygri

Ok, I think I just got a hot deal on this. I ordered by catelogue and got the guy to honour the pricematch to $156.07. I then added a $25 Fido card and two $10 Fido cards to pop it up to $201.07. I used coupon code 88437 to knock it down to $171.07 and then used a $30 dividends rewards coupon to knock it down to $141.07 before tax.
After tax, I got the remote, $25, $10, and $10 phone cards for $162.19. I was going to need these phone cards anyway, so I feel I got the remote for $96.07.

When do the Dell Days start up again?

For people contemplating the purchase of this remote, I suggest you move on. I've owned a Harmony 659 and in the end it really wasn't that useful and the majority of the functions from my custom and specialized remotes had to be used from the LCD screen. This all in one remote is good is you're a simpleton that gets easily confused by many remotes and doesn't use a lot of specialized features. The harmony remote will not make your life easier. The remote you want is one that is able to adapt to your current remotes by remapping the LCD to emulate the physical remote. This type of remote is the ultimate in usability because all of your features are right there and there's no need to hunt and peck on the harmony LCD to find them.
Sorry, if you feel that the harmony is the best of the best, but it's not. Remember, to return your Harmony 880 before the return end date.

I've used my 880 for a couple weeks now and I like it. It doesn't appear to have all the keys of my remotes - I still have to learn how to program the LCD keys - but it's pure simplicity for newbies such as houseguests. I have to admit the 659 is easier than the 880 because the 659 has activity keys near the top of the remote. On the 880, you have to press the Activity key to make the activities appear, which is a gotcha for the most non-technies.
Also, the 880's LCD buttons are small even for people with small fingertips. Other than that, I have no other complaints right now.

Completely disagree. Have you used the 880? The LCD is much better than the 659 and makes it easy to use. The Macros and web programming are amazing.
It used to take me approx 4-5 minutes to setup the HT with the media center pc and projector. Now my harmony does the following
Turns on the amp and sets to the right input
Turns on the Extigy Soundcard and sets the correct settings
Turns on the Media Center PC and brings up "My Videos"
Turns on the Projector and sets to the right input
When I use the VOL buttons, it controls my amp, while the other buttons control my Media Center. No need to figure out which volume control to use.
To watch TV, my LCD on the remote displays the TV station logos- ie. to watch CBS HD, just look for the icon on the remote.
Now this is done all with one button. Anybody can watch the projector at my house now, there's no need to call me on my cell anymore.

And I say...don't listen to this advice.
I completely disagree. I've owned all the different types of remotes, and the Harmony is the best one I've used so far. Not only for others, but for me as a user also. I'm no simpleton, I probably have the most complex HT setup I know of. The Harmony controls it marvellously well, much better than any of my previous remote which included hard button JP1 remotes, Marantz RC2000Mk2, SL9000, Philips Pronto. I've also tried the Sony AV2500.
So what remote are you using now? If you are recommending a Pronto, sorry, but LCD touch screen remotes are nearly unusable because there is no feedback for the buttons, you have to always look at the screen to see what you are doing. And because the screens are still too small on all but the very high end $$$$ touch panel remotes, you will still have to page up and down through the screens because you can't even fit the common functions all on one screen. Not very quick or convenient. I've spent days tweaking the Pronto....something that's not very practical if you actually have a life.
I also have a 688 and the 880 is a much better remote in terms of the screen. So your issue with the 659 doesn't apply to the 880

Looks like the early bird gets the remote
Why don't you give them a call? You'd at least be able to find out what's going on. The number in the flyer is 1-866-925-3355.
Or take the flyer (or print out the flyer page from their website) and try for a pricematch somewhere.

Has anyone drained down the 880's battery? How long does it last? I noticed if I leave my 880 off the charger for a day, the battery indicator will drop one bar. There are only three bars of power...

I called on this, and they've presently got more orders than stock - with the coming inventory on order, they might have just enough to cover the already ordered remotes.
So, nothing to see here folks, unless they find a trainload of these remotes somewhere.

I bought mine after PM'ing at FS against dell they didnt kick up a fuss it was quite easy ... they know when they beat!!
I found the battery lasts 4 days ... and I use mine alot.
What I did find is that I left the remote in the cradle for 6 days while i was on vacation and the LCD burnt out ... with the standard screensaver... I have to take this up with logitech. Any one else had this problem?

Mine does not charge. So dell is sending me another. I also left a message with logitech.. To see who is quicker. They are sending me a docking station.
So far it has been frustrating.
I have to put some paper in the remote on the battery to get the battery to connect properly. And then I have to hold the thing down on the docking station to get it to do any charging. If a butterfly beats its wings in China then the remote notices this change and undocks its self. So I discovered that a tape ( 90 minute one and its casing ) is the idea weight to keep these puppies in the charger.
Lets hope round two is better

I got mine a few weeks ago and it kept resetting itself everytime I would push the play and stop key  . Anyway I have another coming in from Dell. The nice thing is that all the programming is saved at Logitech's website. So all I need to do now is synch up the new one and the job is done.
Has anyone else experienced problems with their remote?
Oh by the way, Dell wouldn't take it back until I spoke with someone from Logitech. I tried to reach Logitech, but they have 9 to 5 support hours and I can't call from work. So I just bent the truth and said that I did talk to them and they confirmed it was broken. Well that was enough for Dell to take it back

I call Logitech Harmony Support and they said they are open till 8:00pm EST. I mentioned that the website said 5pm and I guess they have not changed it yet, or do not care.

Anybody know if this remote would support devices like the xbox (non-360) and maybe an RF light dimmer?

It definately works with the original Xbox as long as you have the remote dongle plugged in. As far a light dimmer, not sure about that one. :D

None of the Harmony's are RF, so they can't control any RF devices.

i don't know if people are interested still in this remote but....
www.cendirect.ca has it on for $219 (claim a stock of 1000's)
if you price match with staples or fs.. thats around 210
still not a bad price.. not as good as dell but you might get it faster

Any idea if this deal is still alive? I searched the Dell website, but I couldn't find the remote. What about the coupon for Dell?
