Digital Camera: Trade up?

I currently have a Canon S230 that needs a new battery. I also want to buy a 1GB card. Before putting any more money into that (since CF card technology is slowly becoming obsolete), I'm wondering if it's more worthwhile to upgrade to an SD450 at this point. I'm not sure how much I would get for the S230, but the extra money spent would give me 4X optical zoom instead of the current 2X, and 5MP instead of 3.2.

not sure if CF is becoming obsolete, you may notice that most if not all prosumer to professional DSLR cameras use this type.

I'm just like you. I had (still have) a Canon S230 before my trip to Asia last month. I picked up a Canon S450 for $489 CDN with free 512mb SD and case over there. S450 is selling around $399 US overseas duty free shops. I could have gotten a S550 for additional $50 - $75 CDN, but I didn't like its bulky look comparing to S450. A great compact camera. If you like S230, you will love S450.

I don't know about you ... I am not too crazy about digicams with proprietary battery. If the camera is doing fine, it seems a pity to drop it just because of the high replacement cost of the new battery.

Do you really want to fall into the same 'trap' once again ??

I'm looking at a Canon A95 - CF slot, AA batteries and 3x Opt/4x Dig zoom. Still a nice compact size as well. They're about 400 at Costco :(, but I'm pretty committed to Canon quality...

I have an SD200 and I like the proprietary battery actually. My sister goes through alot of batteries on her digi cam (Nikon? HP? ), but mine holds a charge for at least two nights of heavy use. Has saved me a bit of money.

I think this is one of those issues that depends on how you use the camera. If you use your camera all the time and aren't travelling with it, then built in rechargeables are great. But if you travel a lot and use the camera mostly on the road, then AA's are the way to go.

I won't consider a camera that I can't stuff AA batteries into because I generally use it while travelling and a lot of places I go I can't be assured of having electricity to recharge or luggage space for recharges and electric currency converters

If you buy the camera overseas, it comes with the local cord for the charger. When I purchased mine, I asked for the North American and the English manual. Now I have 2 sets of cords for my next overseas trip <- if I got $$$ :)
