I don't want to lug around a laptop on trips.
I know the Ipod photo can be used to directly transfer pics from your digicam, but its fairly pricey.
Do any of the other manufacturers have similar devices??
Thanks

I realize you already know about the iPod photo. I use this device (for just that purpose) with a belkin card reader. I picked up the reader from belkin with the coupon 12345 for 50% off.
I don't know if the new iPods (with video) will work with the device, so you might want to confirm. I found it to work really well. Was also able to show the pictures to people off the iPod.
Since then, I've found I enjoy the iPod for music and audiobooks too.

Try these:
- Archos GMini 400/402
- Archos AV420
Future Shop carries the GMini (the 402 is on sale @ $329 right now).
Best Buy has the AV420.
edit: It's the newer Gmini 402 that's $329 at FS, not 400

I couldn't see how you transfer pictures without a computer.

most devices with a usb host port/support should be able to...
the creative zen vision also has this function....built in CF slot that can also fit a 5-in-1 card adapter.

Ncix has one here:.. you will still need a hard drive, but it does exactly what you need... there are others if you do your homework, I think they are all around the same price...
NCIX 2.5" card reader/hdd enclosure (http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=15317&vpn=HM1&manufacture=Mediasonic)

There are tons of devices that are used as a photo wallet, but only some play MP3. Smartdisk Fotochute, Smartdisk FlashTrax XT, Eastgear's PD70X, etc.
One of the best ones is the Epson P2000/P4000. However, it is first a photo wallet storage and MP3 player second. Its MP3 features are more afterthought, however in terms of photo storage it is unrivaled. It has a gorgeous 3.8" LCD, built-in card slots, and ability to view RAW files (if that is important to you).

I see there are a bunch of devices for viewing photos, but they require a computer interface for transfering files.
The Epson, Ipod photo can transfer directly from flash card...
Thanks for the info so far, I have some reseach to do.

The Archos Gmini400 and AV420 I mentioned do not require a computer. They come with built-in CF card slot so you can transfer files directly from a CF card (and other cards with an adapter) to the hard drive. You can try bringing a CF card to either BB or FS and see how it works. Note, FS may have the latest Gmini402 on display -- that one does NOT have a CF slot. The 402 has dropped the CF slot but added USBOTG, in which case you would simply plug the Gmini directly to your digital camera via a USB cable and it will read the files off the memory card in the camera directly. The good thing about this is that you are not limited to CF cards (and no need for an adapter if your camera doesn't use CF).
OTOH, the Epson P2000/P4000 is arguably one of the best units available today but pricey.
