I think it depends on if you are letting it drift into energy saver mode or physically shutting the monitor off every time. Either way I would say the effect on the life would be extremely negligable.

I *HATE* it when the taskbar is hidden. It's not just keep track of my tasks, it tells me when I've got IMs or e-mails. It's an essential monitoring device for me!

your question in the title is "auto-hide taskbar, yes or no?" and the question in the poll is "taskbar always on top?". I hate auto-hide so I picked no thinking the question on the title and the poll would be the same, but when I realized that the question is the other way around, it was too late!

hiding the taskbar only saves like 30 pixels.

If I'm really tight for space (ie. on 800X600 res). Otherwise, it's always on top.

heheh...well if you put it that way :D

for the first 5 years of my computer use...I ALLLLLLWAYS hid that taskbar. I like the cleen flow of things. Seeing the taskbar there., with all that clutter is distracting. When I'm doing something I like to focus on it. If I want to see what's going on, I know where the mouse is.

Of course the past several years, I've gone back to viewing the taskbar...and now lately...I don't have a need I guess....what with this behemoth 20" widescreen that I have now :D

I agree with others, essential for us multitaskers to better keep track of tasks, monitoring, and communicating (IM/emails), clock, use of quicklaunch, fast access to programs running in the systray, etc. But that's just us. I suppose it really comes down to what your usage models are.

never... it messes up with docked window sizes and my icon placement. Can't have that going on..

i keep it (auto)-hidden... it looks cleaner that way

... and if there's an im, it'll blink in orange and i'll know
... if i need to multitask, there's always alt +tab

I suggest hiding the taskbar on LCDs to avoid burn'in. I don't want to see that on my investment.

always on top for me.

I'm surprised most people chose no. I guess they were probably confused with the title/question switch up as well.

yep I keep my task bar on top for the same reason I multi task alot!

I could have 30 windows opened for many differnt things at a given time.. and this is on dual monitor setup also. so it makes a difference..

plus I use 19+ monitors..

I hide mine, but it becomes an issue if I have MSN running while looking at spreadsheets. When a new message alert comes in it prevents me from switching worksheets until I've answered the message. Other than that I just like the largest workspace possible, regardless of the screen size.

Good to know. I was observing what the other RFDers were saying in the LCD Dell thread (http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=202114&page=7&pp=15&highlight=taskbar) in this same forum. Decided not to take a chance. I don't like not seeing the clock or having to check if my email program is open. I auto-Hide the All-in-Wonder taskbar at the top because it messed up my icons when closing a game.

Here's another reference (http://www2.cablewebserver.com:8000/main/fr_index.html?/main/lcd-screen-burn-3.html) to burn-in.
