if my board doesnt have sata support - is it worth buying a pci sata card and adding new hd's in sata? or continue using ide (since the 3 i have now are all ide)

My guess would be to start using SATA - since my next upgrade would most likely be dual core and the fact that ide is just plain old.

what do you guys think?

Just use ide for now.

I agree. SATA is a marginal benefit at this point.

Your next computer will probably have it. That should be soon enough.

Errr if your mobo doesn't have SATA, just go IDE, doesn't really matter.

I'd go for Sata just because of the air flow, but that's just me. But yeah, it's not really worth it unless you plan to convert everything to Sata in your next upgrade.

Go SATA if you need to buy or replace a drive it will make it easier to transfer files when you get your new board and you can even use your old harddrive as a secondary or backup drive. However if you are doing it for performance reasons you wont see much of an increase so stick with what you got.

I'd get a SATA drive and a converter. There's some in the BST and they're not very expensive.

Here's one for $8.

That way you can keep using the drive when you get a SATA mobo.

I don't see why people keep saying that SATA airflow is so much better.. with an IDE cable (flat one, not the stupid rounded ones)... you can fold them to they get out of the way *much* better than a SATA cable which isn't as flexible.

I can do the same thing with Sata cables, so therefore it's air flow is still better than IDE. In any case, not only is folding flat ribbon IDE cables bad for the wiring, but there's also a greater chance of Electromagnetic Interference when the wires are close proximity to each other. ;)

If you're buying *NEW* then SATA mobo and HDD is a fine choice.. if you are keeping your old hardware, don't waste money buying new adapters and parts.
