Check out ebay for cables... for the most part ive gotten some cables for less than 75% of what they go for in a store like futureshop or radioshack

Also, if there is a fleamarket anywhere near where you live (like dr. fleas in the GTA) you can probably find some pretty sweet deals there....

my BIGGEST suggestion would be not to buy the cables at a big box store, because they are usually most expensive there :cheesygri

Costco has some, I believe they're either Philips or Accoustic Research. The Philips ones are fairly thick and speak to good quality. Walmart stocks them for <$20 I believe. If you don't like them you can always return them. Plus, who doesn't have a walmart or Costco nearby...

I'm looking into getting a DVI cable and some component cables. The prices from MonoPrice sure can't be beat, but how's the quality? From the pictures on the site, they don't look too well built.

is it true the thicker, the better?

No. For video applications, the thickness of the wire is meaningless. For audio, you might consider a thicker wire if you're running really, really long wiring with very high drain speakers. Otherwise, you won't hear any difference.

Best price I've ever seen on Home entertainment cables was Entertainment Liquidators at Dixie Rd. and Aimco (just north of Eglington) in Mississauga.

I've seen Tosling (optical), THXCertified S-Video cables. They have a wall of cables.

I cna't remember any exact prices off hand but I'm sure they're over 50% cheaper than Futureshop.

Also recommend monoprice. Excellent prices, IMO good quality (I honestly don't know much about this but the seem excellent to me).

Several of my coworkers have ordered from them and I've never heard anything negative. They are also very helpful (I was looking for a particular cable and emailed tech support a few times until I got what I needed).

My suggestion? Go to Supermetronic or Active Surplus on Queen for cheap ones. Or, you can even get bare wire and connectors and make your own. High quality on the cheap.

I'm going to setup a very basic system with $300 speaker set and $300 receiver. Is it ok to buy cheap speaker wire off dollar store? Any suggestion on stores that sell cheap speaker wires? thanks.

Monoprice - just ordered another $100 from there last night. The item I have from them that would be most affected by build quality is a 50' SVGA cable, and it's really quite good.

I have speaker wire, AV cables, accessories from them....haven't been disappointed yet.

i've been doing a lotta digging into cables lately

I'm going the DIY route and making my own cables for audio/video. If you're going to be making a lot of them you'll get custom length and good quality cables super cheap.

Monoprice is great for pre-made cables.

The only downside to making your own cables is the price of the tools. The crimper frame (the tool with handles) is roughly $20 for a cheapo one with ratcheting grip. The crimper die though is pretty pricey if you go for the top-notch ones.

You'll be looking at like $100-$150 in tools alone (crimper, die, stripper, plus various things like pliers, fish tape if you need it etc etc). I'm spliiting the tool cost among some friends so it'll be economical for me.

Princess Auto usually has audio research toslink and component cables fairly cheap and if they aren't long enough you could just use the ends and buy cable in bulk ( not the toslink unless your good with optical splicing) Also there is Provo wire in Toronto that sells cable in bulk and various ends and ready made cables.
