View Full Version : What's up with all the banning?

I have been at RFD for a few months now. I finally registered because I want to sell some cellphones. Now I have a question to ask. "What is it with all the banning" happening here? What is it with eveyone asking to get all sorts of people banned? This is weird. Aren't we Canadians? I thought we were all supposed to respect freedom of speech. If someone says something you don't agree with then move on. Sort of reminds me of the Brown Shirts in Germany in the 1930s (pre-Nazi Germany) destroying the printing presses of those newspapers they did not agree with.

To the moderators. It seems that you folks and there are quite a few of you seem to be doing more on banning than anything else. Can you explain why that is.

Personally I would love to get into heated debates with folks here but what is the point if I live in constant fear that some 17 year old moderator will ban my account for some silly reason.

I understand that you guys are trying to get funding for the business. I know that you are trying to get more advertising revenue. If this place is about SHOPPING DEALS then what is the point to having the OTHER TOPICS section where you know there will be many different opinions.

Take out the Other Topics section if you want a "clean" family oriented website.

What I would do is split out the Deals section into better classifications such as

Clothing
Furniture
Food
Rentals
Electronics - Computers
Electronics - Consumer

As for the Buy and Sell - you have significant competition from KIJIJI.com (backed by Google) and Craigslist.com. Here you should also have better classifications.

To the Derek and Ryan - instead of being dictators on a small website why not spend time and make this site more shopping focussed. Improve the design and usability.

Focus on the important things rather than all this "ban at the drop of a hat" that you are doing.

Just some thoughts - I hope I don't get banned.

hahaha

There are at least 3 obvious giveaways in this post that tell me who this person is. He has had several accounts banned in the last week or two and keeps coming back claiming to be someone else!

Huh????
Is that how someone gets welcomed here?
Are all newcomers guilty until proven innocent?
Or until you become a part of the "gang".

banning is necessary to filter some morons that shouldnt be in the forums. most bans last a few days anyways. stop complaining.

This is a private board.

Their rules.

Or to quote Morris Buttermaker [Bad News Bears - 2005]:

"This ain't no democracy, it's a dictatorship, and I'm Hitler!"

Can you explain what is defined as "Moron"?
How do you determine who is a moron?

Just out of curiosity - what are the ages and educational levels of the people that determine who is a moron and what their moron-judging qualifications are?

Sorry - but "thought vigilantes" are a pet peeve of mine.

If you want to develop a policy where people are more responsible then institute a policy where people use their real names. Anonymity leads to people acting in irresponsible ways. By using real names then people will be more wary of what they say.

How about this - to become a member with posting privileges then a newcomer has to meet an approved senior member in person. The newcomer can then show ID to the senior member and final account authorization given. Then everyone uses their real first and last names. Everyone takes responsibility for their words.

There ARE better ways to control excesses than juvenile vigilante behaviour.

What does being Canadian have to do with banning accounts on a website?

Freedom of thought and freedom of speech.

We expect the government to provide us with freedom of thought and freedom of speech but then we are all so ready to take it away from one another.

How can we be Canadians if we can't allow one another to speak? Banning is censorship.

Why am I getting into this debate - I enjoy a good debate every once in a while with intellectual peers. Christmas shopping is done and now I have some time to kill.

This is a private board, they can do as they wish without justification. Just be glad they have some discretion, and note you are not being forced to be here. Bottom line is you are playing on their "field" so you play by their rules, fair or not.

According to common sense and common law this is a "Public Space".

If there was a password required to enter the site and read anything then it would be a private site. If this was a "family" or "company" site then I could understand your comments.

Why do I know this - well I worked at a dot-com a few years ago and I remember that from some of the legal discussions that we had.

dont like it - leave and start your own board.

youve got some great ideas, why not use 'em yourself.

i got temp banned for 3 days cause i said id like to punch someone in the face - it was right to temp ban me for being an idiot.

read the rules- then post your thoughts. there are reasons beind every rule here at rfd.

oh, and btw, most fo the bans are either from the same person just starting new accounts over and over again to post stupid things/flames/floods/dumps etc, or by scammers trying to part some poor old joe from his hard earned dollars.

I think the bottom line is if you are not an idiot, or do not do dumb things, you will not be banned. Do not bother other people and you will do just fine. The mods decide how the forums run, period. Nobody cares how you or I for that matter think it should be run, because at the end of the day, we are nobodies, and they call the shots. Live with it!

I guess that is one of the defining characteristics of being Canadian.

heh. We really don't ban that many people other than spammers, scammers or the people who keep trying to come back with new accounts after already getting banned...
