Yes, you have to convert it. I use Videora Ipod, very easy to use. It's free and can be downloaded here! (http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPod/)
Yes, i use iTunes to transfer the video files to ipod. Just simply make a new playlist and drag and drop all the video files.

How do you get songs off the ipod onto the computer? When I sync up with iTunes, the songs are greyed out. These are not songs from the iTunes store.

You can't, you have to get 3rd party software to do this.
I learned this the hard way, when my ipod's HD started to die. :p

You can transfer songs from ipod to pc. You have to download a program called sharepod. Again, it's free and easy to use. It can be downloaded here! (http://www.sturm.net.nz/website.php?Section=iPod+Programs&Page=SharePod)
You have to enable disk use for your ipod. Extract the files and make a sharepod folder into your ipod and run the program from the ipod.

or you show hidden files/folder and drag the mp3s from your ipod to somewhere on your computer.

Yeah it's just when itunes transfers the music onto the ipod it changes the filenames so all the names will be messed up, you can fix that easily with a program that can rename the files from the tags.
