I went back in to my previous post and you know what I found very disturbing. Several of my long detailed and informative post have been deleted.
The information I provide is from the perspective of an industry insider.
It is quite sad that these post have been deleted.
I would like to ask 'why' have these post been deleted?
Who ever deleted my contributions, please repost them and let the forum readers decide if they should be deleted or left on as my post complied with Forum Rules and were valid points of discussions one would have at a round table.
This is not a true democratic forum even when one follows the rules if this continues to happen.

With luck, you understand your industry better than you understand RFD. This is not a "public forum." It is a business, albeit a really useful and valuable one, run by professionals. It isn't a hobby, and it isn't personal. And whatever else it is, it isn't a democracy.
Although I vaguely remember your posts as inoffensive and informational, it was likely found that something about them contravened the rules or the spirit of the rules here. Also, the moderators may or may not let you know why posts were deleted. You can either trust that they know what they are doing, or participate somewhere else.

i have tried 3 of these websites, nothing compares to going to my local optical store, quality of service/quality of the actuall glasses can not be compared to an online store. I dont mind paying a bit extra for a quality product.

You say quality, service and paying a 'bit' extra were the difference for you...mind sharing more details??
I can't find a pair with thin lenses for less than $500/pair anywhere in my prescription (-6.25) in Ottawa/Toronto at any small or large opticians.
I have ordered over 15 pairs worth of glasses, all various shapes and sizes, sunglasses and regular glasses with thin lenses for that price. I have done goggles4u, zenni and optical4less all with very good results.
They are all "quality" prescriptions according to my optrician (who doesn't have a shop built into his practice.
This post has tons of examples of people getting screwed by local opticians and going elsewhere for the same if not better prescriptions for a fraction of the price.

Hi
My pair of glasses just broke in half and in need of a new pair. I have 4.75 and 4.50 vision. I would like thin lense and non spherical for it makes the lense much thinker on the sides.
What is the thinnest lense measurements I can get for my vision?
Thanks

The basic concept of a forum is a gathering place for discussions to take place while following a protocol of expanding the knowledge base of members. If round table discussions cannot be talked about openly when complying to forum rules, then the forum turns into a vehicle for commercial enterprise only and not about expanding knowledge base.
I think this forum does expand knowledge base, but only up to the extent the which the regulators see fit. This type of big brotherness will ultimately limit the personal growth of it's members.
In addition, I would like to know if anything I have ever posted in the past is inaccurate. If it is, please inform me as to why?
I'm still waiting for an explaination as to why my post were deleted. Please note that the explaination is not for me, but for the members who were interested in learning more about the optical industry.

Just a quick note if anyone's planning to order from EyeBuyDirect today... you may want to wait a few hours. They're having a buy-one-get-one-free sale starting at midnight PST (in about 6 hours if I did the math right).
It's a pretty decent sale, with a couple possible caveats:
I don't remember for sure (I wish I'd wrote it down), but I seem to recall that lens coatings (like AR) didn't count. So you'd get the 2nd pair of frames/lenses for free, but would still pay for the 2nd coating.
When I bought from them in February, I was nailed with duty because the glasses were marked as "sunglasses" (which aren't exempt from duty). I was able to get the duty back from Canada Customs (minus the $8 Canada Post customs fee) once I sent the receipt showing that they're prescription glasses, but still it was a bit of a hassle. Hopefully they've started marking them properly, but I haven't bought again since then so I don't know for certain (maybe someone else who's ordered recently can shed some light).
Again, a pretty decent sale, especially if someone's already planning to order from them.
I'll post an update once their sale's up, and play with their checkout cart a bit to try and get a few more details.

Thanks. Can the Administrator or Moderator of who deleted my post repost my reply to this tread.
Thanks you.
If I had to guess I'd say they were deleted for being off-topic. Were you talking about glasses that are "just over $30 shipped"? If not, then you were off topic. Could also have been for spamming if you posted a bunch of responses in a short period of time. Just a guess...

Alright, the EyeBuyDirect 2-for-1 sale is now live.
Just did a little testing/checking:
It just applies to the frames. However, single-vision lenses do come free with the frames. If you order 2 pairs, you'll get the cheaper one free (if they're both the same price, one of them will be free).
Upgrades do not apply. That is to say that if you wear bi-focals/progressives, choose a lens upgrade (polycarbonate, high index, etc), or add coatings (AR, UV, Tint, etc), those are all considered extras on both pairs - you'll still get the "2-for-1" on the frame prices, but not on the options.
To perhaps explain it a little better:
If you buy:
1x $17.95 pair (free single vision lenses, no upgrades, etc)
1x $17.95 pair (free single vision lenses, no upgrades, etc)
you'll get a $17.95 discount, so your total will be $17.95 + shipping
If you buy:
1x $17.95 pair + $19 bi-focal upgrade + $6.95 AR coating
1x $17.95 pair + $19 bi-focal upgrade + $6.95 AR coating
you'll still only get a $17.95 discount
-----
Few other notes:
Check your cart and make sure it's working. I did a bunch of playing around to test the above, and it bugged once and showed only a $0.95 discount. Edit: turns out it was because the minimum order price wasn't reached - minimum order total is $14.95. Also doesn't apply to designer, sport frames, or sunglasses.
The spot to enter coupon codes has vanished - I'm assuming they're disabled for the sale.
The sale's running for a week. Sunday will be the last day.

Thanks for your response, however I was on topic. Buying glasses for $30 is more than just a price point. It relates what one should expect when they buy glasses for $30 and what constitutes a $30 pair of glasses.
If these issues cannot be discussed in an open forum, then what is the purpose of a forum? A forum is about discussions which are relevant to a topic. Otherwise, how could there be over 3000 post to this thread, if ever post was just about price?
The members of this forum are still waiting for a response from those moderating this forum to explain why my previous post were deleted? If you read all 3000 post on this thread, none of the info I've posted is redundant nor irrelevant.
Still waiting?

No offense taken. This is a forum. You can express your views, but if someone deleted your above post, that would be anti-forum stuff.
I think some folks in this forum / thread want to increase their knowledge base regarding items they may or plan to purchase, while the others just want pricing info. If I find any glasses for $2.99 I'll let this thread know

There are hundreds of different progressive lens designs if the design is not matched well to the way your eyes work, it may work, but not optimally.
When you see your optometrist, ask them for the exact name and brand or the lens and tell me what your prescription is?
I'll give you my professional opinion?
hi
here is my prescription:
-8.00/-0.75/30 add 2.25
-7.00/-0.75/30 add 2.25
they never told me what specific lenses i was getting and to tell the truth,i never asked.

Your case is not that simple, because your prescription is fairly high and your add is fairly high.
If you have been using progressives already, I would stay with the same design or a better design lens if you want to lower your risk of having a bad experience. Buying progressive lenses online is a bit riskier than buying single vision glasses for those that do not fully understand optics. This is because progressive lenses employ more complicated optics than single vision glasses.
Some of the measurements you need are difficult to do by yourself and the help of an optician is probably required if you want it to work smoothly.
Good luck.

While your local optician (if experienced) will be very helpful, the lens design is important as there are 100's of different types of progressive lens styles.
A local optician could still give a good or porr design, as they are (normally) still looking out for their bottom line.
I'm glad everything worked out well for you :-0

Just received my replacement pair form goggles4u.com. Paid $28US. The first pair the prescription wasn't right. They gave me a credit and I reorder the same pair. The second pair are worse than the first. One lense seems to have a ripple in it. Prescription seems worse than the first. Both pairs have quite a bit of distortion looking side to side and up and down. I ordered a pair just over a year ago and they were fine though they had plastic lenses. These new ones had the cheapest lenses they have, glass. Not sure if my prescription is anything out of the ordinary. Might try ClearlyContacts.ca

Is it the lenses? or your glasses doesn't fit on you the same as your previous one? I am no expert on optics, but since you have Cyl and Axis, it could be possible that the relative position of the lenses on your glasses affects overall vision.
I had to fiddle with the nose pieces and the rim of my glasses to get it right for me and I don't have astigmatism.

Your ideal lens would be freeform atoric lenses. If you use basic lenses you must expect distortion and a smaller field of clear vision.
You can ask glasses4u if they have a 5 axis cnc diamond bit machine for making atoric lenses (but i doubt it, as it cost upwards of $1,000,000 usd for the machine).
Unfortunately you've become a statistic of the online eyeglass world (some online places have better lenses than others). Better luck in the future.

It's a funny thing that people come here for eyeglass deals and there is absolute nothing wrong with that.
However, if you read enough post on this tread, a large percentage of the post have to do with people whining and complaining about this and that regarding their online eyeglass purchase. Their expectations need to be logical if they are to engage in online eyeglass shopping.
Many people including myself have many opinions, however not that many are experts in the field. They normally hear the opinions of non-experts and when someone like myself (sorry...I'm an expert in the optical field) they are not happy, b/c I tell them things they don't want to hear, they are not happy. Their knowledge base is derived from the few webpages and articles which they read online (which are typically biased either right or left winged) and then they go on to post their advice to other newbies.
Let's give everyone a hand of applause!

I ordered a pair of glasses last month from Zenni and am extremely pleased!
I ordered an inexpensive pair ,as this was the first time purchasing online (aprox $22 Cad total inc. shipping) and they arrived at my door in one week!...Quality was just as good as any of my previous pairs purchased at Vogue Optical over the years.
I am sold....I will buy online from now on!

Those framed you showed on zenni are okay, but they are injection molded frames which are typically lower quality, but for the price you paid I would say they are in line.
To comment on the Vogue Optical 2 for 1 glasses for $250, most of their 2 for 1 frames are also of lower quality, similar to the zenni frame you provided in the link. That is the only way they car provide the 2 for 1 deals, sell you low quality goods (there are some okay 2 for 1 deals out there, but not at Vogue Optical).
If you have ever seen high quality frames you would know the difference right away, it would be more evident to a professional in the field. Then again it would cost you a lot more money.
Ditching Vogue Optical was probably a smart move :)

Hey guys. Thanks for all the info in the thread. From what I have read it seems like if you are looking for basic lenses, these sites are a great option. For more complicated stuff, it sounds a little bit more hit and miss.
I am just wondering if you guys could help me analyze my prescription to see if it's pretty basic. Or, if I order is there anything I should know with this prescription.
The prescription sheet has a big chart with OD,OS on the left, and Sphere,Cyl, Axis, Prsim, PD across the top. I have:
OD -3.25
OS -3.25
The only other number that anything filled in for it is PD 63.0
There is a section below for "ADD", but I have no values filled in for any of those boxes.
Would I need a fairly basic lense or something more advanced?
Thanks

You could get by on the 1.61 index (would still depend on the shape of the frame) and the design of the lens. Please note that lenses have many technical attributes, not only the index, but the other parts are too technical for this forum or the average person. I've written technical stuff before, and the only reply I get is that people are only interested in glasses for $2.99, even if they are getting jacked :)
Good luck!

Believe me, I am pretty leery of buying these online. But I can't afford new glasses. I need a pair of sunglasses for work that I don't have to worry about, a good pair of sunglasses, and normal glasses. I don't want to be paying $2.99 a pair, but I don't want to be paying $299 a pair either. I wish there was some middle ground that didn't involve buying glasses unseen over the internet, but I sure haven't found it.
I don't see many reviews for the $39dollarglasses site. Anyone have any input? They have the best site layout by far, but do cost more.
Do any of these sites have higher quality than others?

Unfortunately the average consumer will be unable to judge the quality of glasses upon first glance, only a veteran in the field could.
I would say a site that has technical reasons as to why their products are better is important, the only problem with that is that the average person doesn't have enough logic to deduce the technical jargon.
Most places just say we buy direct from the factory. That one liner doesn't mean jack! Within any given factory there are multiple grades of products.
Gotta jet, but I'll talk more about this if there are any interested parties. Don't want the moderator to delete my post again :)

Speaking for myself, I don't expect these to be as good as $200-300 glasses. I don't know what others expect. All I really care about is if the glasses will get me by. Best case scenario, I get 2 years out of my glasses (with my 'work glasses' a year if I am lucky). It doesn't really matter what kind I have owned. I'd say a lot of people are in the same vote, which is why this is a popular thread.
I don't need top quality frames. All I care about is if the lenses are at least decent. Or, more to the point, won't do me any harm. For under $100, if I get a year or 2 out of them I would be very happy because I only get that with my current ones anyway.

I just want to order the cheapest glasses just to try them out.
My prescription is:
OD: -3.00/-0.75/075
OS: -3.50/-0.50/015
Do you think I'd be ok with the 1.57 lenses just to try them out for casual wear?
Thanks. Also does anyone have any current codes for clearlycontacts or zenni?

Here is an update of my experience. Contacted Goggles4u about the second pair and they offered to send my another pair if I sent the the defective one's back or a 50% off discount code. I took the discount code. Not sure if I will ever use it. I order a pair from ClearlyContacts.ca for $74. They arrived in four days and the quality was excellent.

Ok, I thought I would update the thread with a review. I only found this thread a few weeks, and decided to try out a couple of these places. I went with Zenni for a pair of sunglasses, and 39dollarglasses.com for normal glasses. I placed the order at Zenni a week after the other other, so those glasses are not here yet.
39dollarglasses.com is not the cheapest service by far, but I really liked their site, frames, and lense options they have available. A lot more choice than a lot of the other sites, and a superior design for finding frames. Plus, at least from what I have read, 39dollarglasses appears to have better quality stock lenses.
Cost
It was $69 total for the options I choose. Cear Polycarbonate lenses (1.59 index), which appears to be what my last glasses were. Anti-reflective coating added. Shipping.
Shipping
I received my glasses yesterday. It was 10 days from placing the order, to receiving them in the mail.
Frames
The frames are really nice looking. Above expectations.
It was pointed out earlier in the thread that as consumers, we aren't experts on frame construction. All I can say is that these frames are basically identical to my previous frames from what I see. The materials and construction don't appear to be any cheaper. I got my previous frames on clearance for $89 + taxes though.
Lenses
Everything appears to be good with the lenses. The one issue is, I am adjusting to a change in my prescription in one eye, so it's making it a little tough to judge if everything is ok. Topping that odd my other lenses were banged to hell, so looking through crystal clear lenses is an adjustment on it's own. No distortions though, and no obvious defects visually inspecting the lense.
Extras
The glasses arrived with a nice hardshell case, a cleaning cloth, and even a little keychain glasses repair tool.
Service:
I contacted customer service (email) a few times before placing the order, and once after to ask a question about the invoice. I received a reply within a couple of hours each time. The rep was very helpful, sending detailed replies each time.
Other notes:
About the only downside is that my frames likely require a bit of bending to shape to my face (not a ton though). I have to get this done with every frame I buy though. The difference is obviously that buying in a store they just do this when I pick the glasses up.
I have taken frames into Walmart in the past and had them fixed without them asking a single question about if I bought them there or not. So I may just do that with these as well.
Conclusion
Again, not the cheapest service on the web. But $69 for a full set of glasses with AR/UV coating is ridiculous. I would be almost 3 times that at any of the stores here and that is IF I happened to find a clearance/sale frame I liked. I'd be lucky to get the just the frame for $69 though in most cases.

Ok, just just received a second pair of glasses I ordered from Zenni.
Cost
It was $24 total for the frames/options I choose. (their standard lenses with anti-reflective coating).
Shipping
It was only about 8 days for these to arrive.
Frames
WHile the frames I got from 39dollarglasses exceeded expectations, these frames around about what I expected for the price. They aren't bad frames at all, but not as good quality as the 39dollarglasses ones which I would put on par with any pair I have owned..
Lenses
Now this is the odd part. These lenses 'on paper' aren't supposed to be as high quality as the 39dollarglasses ones, but I prefer them. They are listed as a Polycarbonate Composite on their site, while the 39dollarglasses ones are true Polycarbonate. I have no idea why, but I find then Zenni ones nicer to look through.
Extras
No extras at all. They just came in a pretty crappy plastic case.
Service:
NO experience with customer service. But the shipping was really quick as mentioned.
Conclusion:
It would be really tough to find anything to complain about paying $24 for a set of glasses. I don't think they are as durable as the 39dollarglasses ones, but again my first impression is that I like the lenses more. And they were 1/3 of the price.

Ok, an update on my reviews above after wearing each of these pairs for a day.
The Zenni frames would likely not take any severe abuse. They aren't horrible, but they aren't great. But again, for $24 including shipping they are pretty impressive. With proper care, I think I would definitely get a years use out of them.
Now, the 39dollarglasses pair I still have some concerns about. The frames are fantastic frames, but something does look 100% right looking through the lenses. There are no distortions or anything. And nothing is visibly wrong with the lense. So it's a tough one to explain.
For those of you who know something about glasses, I have a question. All of my previous frames, even my sunglasses have a bit of a 'curve' to them. EG a slight 'wrap around' effect. Even the ones from Zenni came like that. The 39dollarglasses ones are completely straight though. Could this difference be causing any issues?
I am likely going to send them back to be inspected (their recommendation). But I am just curious about this issue with the 'curve' anyway for future reference.
Also, when they bend your frames at a glasses store, how do they do it? EG if I wanted to adjust the bend in the arms a little.
Thanks

Here is my experience with 39dollarglasses. Order about 7-10 days again and it is shipped out the next day. Also contacted them regarding my prescription and their response is prompt.
Received the lense from mail in about 10 days. The frame and glass are both very good. I can see much clearer through the glass. The only thing that concerns me is that the frame feels a little bit loose but not too bad. I wonder how I can adjust it myself.
Prepared to order a sun glass from them again. Overall very happy. Thanks OP.

Ok, another review. I just got glasses I ordered from ClearyContacts.ca
Cost
Around $69 for a pair of their clearance frames (but brand name), with lenses, AR coating, shipping. I upgraded to a slightly higher index lense ($19). Same cost as 39dollarglasses, for the same quality/specs basically (see below)
Shipping
Considering this is a Canadian site, I was a little disappointed. It was about 7 days which is good, but the other sites from the States were only about 2 days more.
Frames
Best quality frames out of the 3 places I have ordered from. 39dollarglasses where very close, but I give the edge to clearlycontacts.
Lenses
Not as high index as the 39dollarglasses lenses, which 'on paper' were the highest index lense for that price point (under $70 glasses). But lenses seem flawless.
Extras
Nice case, repair tool, micro fibre cloth. Nice shipping box as well.
Service:
No experience with customer service.
Conclusion:
Again, from other reviews I read I expected a bit quicker shipping time. Very similar quality product as 39dollarglasses, and same extras for about the same price. But, 39dollarglasses has WAY more frames to choose from at that price point.

No problem. I could have used some more 'specific' reviews when I was researching, so I wanted to provide any info I could for other people.
My summary comparing Zenni, 39dollarglasses, and ClearlyContacts based on MY experiences:
Best Value:
I would have to say Zenni. The frames are not as good quality, but I only ordered a 'mid' price level frame. For $24 including shipping I got a decent pair of frames, with lenses that seem bang on. A great option if you need a second pair of glasses for sure.
Best Quality:
I'd go with ClearlyContacts. Again, my only possible knock on them is that the shipping time was about 3-4 days longer than I have read in other reviews (from Canadians). The product seems great though.
BUT, ClearlyContacts has a limited 'budget' selection. 39dollarglasses has 4 times the amount of frames at that price point. So if you can find what you want at ClearlyContacts, I recommend them. If not, 39dollarglasses seems to be very close quality wise, but with more selection.

The review is 'good' on a end user level, but as an insider in the optical industry I can point out many flaws in the review (not trying to be rude or mean).
First I would point out that the lens coatings from costalcontacts are average at best. Second I would point out that all the brand name frames are discontinued frames. The quality would still be pretty decent, but the styles would be dated a couple of years old. You know how clothing stores sell off out of fashion clothing for almost nothing, b/c they need to make logistical arrangements for new styles. The same thing happens in the eyewear industry.
The budget frames from them is not really good value, as they come up with their own name to try to pass off as a brand to unknowing consumers (house labels). I think it's 'Kam Dillion' or something like that. I would rather have a frame with no name than a Kam Dillion frame, just sounds silly to me.
The average consumer would never know the small details I understand about the industry.
As a side note, I always get the feeling that people are expressing their opinions about eyeglasses, but have very little technical knowledge or insight into the industry. It's almost like hearing a little child give a review of the newest quad core computer out there. MAN IT'S REAL FAST :)

It is authentic stuff.

Fair points, but in reply:
If you like a frame style, what difference does it make if it's 'dated' or not. I couldn't care less if a frame is the current 'style' or not. I buy what I like. And as pointed out, they are frames that on clearance on the site. It's not like they are trying to overcharge for an 'out of date' frame anyway.
Second, of course I am not an expert. But I have my previous $300 pair of glasses sitting right here and can wear either pair and not notice a difference. Do I require much more expertise than that? I took these to a glasses place in town I used in the past and they said the prescription is fine, and that the frames are nice. Good enough for me. That is all I hoped for at that price.
Third, I don't expect perfect quality from any of these online places. We are in tough economic times though, and a lot of us need to save some money. I don't get insurance through work. I have my own policy I pay through the teeth for, and it only covers $150 every 2 years for glasses. I HAVE to have prescription sunglasses as well because I work outdoors part of the year. So I have to get 2 pairs of glasses that will last me 2 years, and only have $150 coverage. So whether or not a glasses frame suit the current trends or not makes no difference to me or a lot of other people in the slightest. I just want a decent product.
And last, it's people 'in the industry' gouging us and trying to make us feel like idiots that created this market in the first place. I have no choice but to search for alternate means to get my glasses. It's literally between my glasses, or my rent because they are such an expense. I am not knocking anyone's expertise or field of employment, but people in the field have told how big the markups are on glasses. Does blindly paying that make us anymore educated as a consumer? All we are trying to do is find options.
Most of the people in this thread are using these retailers for the same reason I am. So it's fair for us to post reviews based on our experiences. None of us are claiming to be experts.

And assuming that retail stores glasses are of a much better quality or simply perfects, is not true. If you deal with the best etailers, you will most probably gonna have a good product, comparable with the majority of the retailers but with a better price/quality.
Like someone said, it's the retailers themeselves who created this exodus. No wonder they are complaining now. If they are not happy about the situation, they have themselves to blame and the solution is in their hands. But, IMHO, online glasses has not come to it's maturity so they are losing only a tiny fraction of custumers. So, I don't expect prices adjustements from retail stores within a short timeframe...

I actually read that in the States Walmart is going to be offering (or is offering in some stores) 'complete glasses for $38'. They only offer a selection of something like 5 frames from what I read. No AR coating, but a 12 month guarantee. At $38 though, I'm sure you could add the AR coating and be comparable to the clearlycontacts/39dollarglasses prices.
I know there aren't a high end retailer or anything. Just an example of a place adapting though.

I just got a pair of glasses from Optical4less. This is my second time ordering from them.
I've been wearing my first pair from then for over a year. The frame fits perfectly and the lenses are very comfortable to see through. The only problem is the paint on the frame started to peel off a little bit after one year. But for the price I paid I can't really complain.
The new pair is bang on in terms of the prescription. It seems my eyes really like the lenses from optical4less. I also have a pair from clearlycontacts but my eyes don't feel all right with those lenses although I had them checked by my eye doctor and it showed they had the right prescription, which is the same as the ones from optical4less. I guess I'll order from optical4less again the next time as I now have confidence in their lenses.

I did not read through the entire post but I am looking for feedback on Clearly Contacts in regards to warranty. I bought my son a pair of Emporio Armani glasses in July and they broke today. I called and they are sending him another pair (his prescription is very high). They want the old glasses back to ensure that is a manufacturer defect. I have no idea, the arm broke off. He is 9 and probably tough on the glasses. I am just wondering about other people's experiences with warranty.

They've been great with 2 repairs for me. If the arm is broken near the hinge, tighten the screw a bit so the hinge is tight. It'll then look like a defect in the arm gave out.

After reading this post I felt highly disgusted. Finding deals is one thing and helping stores provide us with continued deals is important. However, when people with extreme low moral character try to fabricate fraud so that a company will replace their item, that is very low and the end result in the long run will mean that the deals won't be as good! Why, because if there is enough of this fraud activity, prices will eventually go up! and the deal won't be as good anymore.
If you're paying for cheap glasses, what's the point of nickel and diming?
Take the hit and buy a new pair for $30, so that the rest of the people that buy from these sites can keep getting deals!
The level of immaturity is unfathomable for some folks! If you are 12 years old I will forgive your comments, but if you are over 12 years old, grow up?
PS. If the mod edits or deletes this post, pls explain why? Thanks :)

Pairs from Zenni and 39dollarglasses. I included the bill that the companies emailed to me (the invoice, not the packing reciept) and a copy of my prescription.
I was going to get a couple of more backup pairs since I have insurance money remaining, but I was waiting to see what they covered. I just got the money back yesterday and am pleased. They usually work as hard as they can to screw me over, so I expected there to be some hassle.
It's pretty crazy that I can get about 4 pairs of glasses now, where my $150 every 2 years from Blue Cross wouldn't even cover all of one pair before.

I just ordered my first pair from Zenni. For those who claimed with insurance, how did you handle the exchange as I assume I was charged in US funds? Or am I missing something and was I charged in Cdn?

I have ordered from the following 4 companies, some more than once. I will post a detailed review once I recieve the last one from ClearlyContacts.
Goggles4u
Optical4less
Zenni Optical

I put my order in Dec 08 with ClearlyContacts.ca. I have been informed of the delay, but I find it odd that it takes all this time and it is not shipped yet. Anyone else experienced delays with orders from them?

I've ordered from them several times - only the order this month had a lengthy delay, so maybe they are swamped. Once they ship, it's overnight to Toronto.

I am a member of that group, and I am hoping some more info is posted.
There are threads on there where people say Zenni informed them they couldn't/wouldn't use the higher index lenses. They suggested either another option, refunded the extra fee for the high index lenses after payment, or offered a full refund.
There are other posts were people say Zenni supplied the lower index lenses, charged them for higher index, and didn't tell them.
That's a pretty major difference in the cases.
I am curious to see how that discussion progresses.

Purchased some glasses last year with costal, there was a mix up with one of the glasses. Took over a month, back and forth, to clear everything up; I think they last track of something during the process, but they were polite at all times and everything was sorted out correctly at the end.
One thing I did have to do with my insurance company was they consider it an out of country claim and also wanted the detail paper work. Printing out the email and sending it was no good, and they didn't say what would be consider legit. This might due to the person's lack of experience with internet glasses purchase claim, so the process took a long time (YMMV). They also incorrectly paid out $ in CND and not the converted USD amount in CND, which I highlighted for them on my CC statement.

I bought a pair with 1.61 index from clearlycontacts.com
I bought another pair with standard index (1.54?) from goggles4you.com
I compared the thickness, they're both the same.
What isn't the same, is when I use my lateral vision and look through the CC glasses, the prescription holds up fine.
Whereas when I use my lateral vision and look through the G4Y glasses, it gets all blurry, like there's no prescription at all.
Is that the premise of indices? To see how well the prescription holds up when you're not looking directly straight?

I purchased 6 pairs of glasses from Clearly Contacts, all with 1.61 index - and I noticed the same phenomenon. There were 2 pair in particular that had very poor "lateral vision". When I looked straight ahead - they all appeared to offer similar focal properties - but when I [for ex.] scanned a page of text with my eyes, I noticed quite substantial blurring / lack of magnification when my eyes were off-center.
It has been awhile since I have returned the select pair of glasses, but IIRC, they both had larger frames + lenses than the glasses I kept.
Even the *good* CC glasses that I kept, aren't quite as sharp (edge to edge) as the glasses I bought from Costco.. but the differences are pretty subtle.

Bought a pair from Zenni, lenses were a bit different from the last pair I bought, so I shipped it back to get it "fixed".. Hopefully they contact me before refunding me if there is no "defects"
Otherwise Zenni had been pretty good so far..
EDIT:
Zenni never sent me any email.. I had to personally ask for the status of my order.. Email me two days later in regards to the glasses. Call them up to see if they can do anything, sales support just said "no" before I could finish my question...
Not going back there again. Do not Recommend!

I have purchased several pairs of glasses from these guys and all have been great. I have some single vision sunglasses and several pairs of progressives and one pair of the progressives with photogrey lenses. All are nice quality frames and the prescriptions are right on the money. They quite often have 2 for 1 sales on and you can almost always find a coupon online for 10-20% off.
The only thing that I don't like is that they have raised there shipping prices to Canada up to $19.00 which I think is pretty steep since the package arrives with about $7 worth of postage on it. Until recently they charged $8.95 shipping to Canada which seemed quite reasonable. Not sure why the big jump in shipping costs to Canada, they still only charge $5.95 to ship to the USA.

For anyone thats bought from Zenni Optical:
During the checkout where you select the shipping method, the only option is U.S. Shipping. Was wondering if they're going to ship to Canada do I still pick U.S. Shipping as my shipping method unless I missed something?
Also, how do you pay with a billing address? I can see Visa, Mastercard,... on the bottom left of the screen, but doesnt look like I can submit the information before I click submit.

When you go to the checkout page you will have to fill in shipping info. The next screen will update shipping cost ($8.95 to Canada I believe) and this is where the cc info goes so you can see total cost before submitting cc info

I ordered a pair of glasses from Coastal Contacts on January 10, 2010. Finally received it on January 27, 2010. The frame looks very good but the lens really make me sick. I ordered the high index 1.67 one. But the one from Coastal Contacts are much thicker than my current one which I remember is only 1.61. That's not all. When I put it on, there is totally no focus. It's very blur and i can't even use it for just few minutes.
Now I have to return and ask refund. Hopeful their service won't disappoint me more further.
Have anyone return their produce before? How's their service? Do they cover the return shipping cost? I read from their website, for sunglasses return, the buyer have to pay for return shipping cost. How about prescription glasses?

"pretty steep" is an understatement. That's twice what any other places charge in general. I got a pair from Frimoo that come from Hong Kong, to Vancouver, to me (Ontario) for less than half of that shipping price. I have ordered from a few other places and they were all around $9 shipping. From my experience, the quality is comparable across a lot of these stores (used Zenni, Coastal, Glassesshop, Firmoo, and 39dollarglasses) so there is no way I would pay $19 shipping. I'd just go to another retailer.
A mini-review as well, I am quite happy with the glasses I got from Firmoo. I ended up finding their site because I posted a thread on the Glassyeyes forum asking if anyone knew were I could track down a specific style of frame in a specific size. Someone pointed out the frame on Firmoo's site, so I gave them a try. Price wise, they fall between 39dollarglasses and Zenni.

If you have a really weak prescription like me, I can't imagine why you would pay over 100 dollars on a pair of glasses. My 15 dollar glasses from zenni have survived being stepped on and rough treatment for a year. For shipping I guess they have sorted their **** out, because shipping only took 2 weeks for me. Highly reccomended.

Ordered glasses from Zenni optical for under 15$ shipped to saskatoon on Feb 16th and that package is currently in Calgary. It should be here tomorrow (Feb 25th) which is amazing. I ordered cheap 8$ frames with no extras, i'll update when I get them, but prescription glasses for under 15$ and shipped to me in less than 10 days is a pretty sickbonerz deal.
Also ordered glasses from Clearly contacts on the same day, using the free frames offer. Paid for upgraded lens and all together cost under 50$ to ship it to BC. The glasses haven't even been sent out yet, and I know its a sweet deal to get 300$ frames for 50$, but to have Zenni make and ship glasses from hong kong to saskatoon even before Clearly contacts sends out their glasses is kinda weak sauce. Anybody else who ordered the free frames still waiting around too?

It took 10 days to get my third pair of glasses from Zenni. I'd paid $6.95 US for shipping. All the glasses have been great, including the Clearly Contacts pair. I wanted photochromatic lenses and also a pair of prescription sunglasses, so I went with Zenni for subsequent orders. Clearly Contacts does have a 10%-Off offer through VISAPERKS and free shipping!

Got my clearly contacts a day after zenni. Huge difference in quality but that was expected. The clearly contact pair are amazing. Both are aviator style but the zenni optical ones Are difficult to adjust to. Since the lense are so big in aviator frames peripherial vision is pretty distorted, but the clearly conatcs pair is much less so. I'm thinking it's cause I got upgraded edimon lenses and anti reflective coating maybe? Cheers

Hello
I have read a lot of the thread but not all so if this has been asked and answered please forgive me.
I am going to get my eyes checked and want to make sure I ask for the right information on my prescription. Is there a different prescription or measurements for contact lenses than for glasses?
Is there somewhere I can look for the definitions/explainations about the different coatings/types of lenses for glasses? ie uv or photochromatic index etc?
Thanks a bunch in advance!

I cannot answer all your questions but make sure they will provide the prescription to you (easy) and that it will include the PD (eye to eye spacing, rarely provided).
Ask this when shopping and don't feel ashame. You are paying for eyes exam. Not eyes exam and glasses later...

Ordered once, two pairs, high index.
The glasses are an acquired taste, but i really love my primary metal pair now over my locally purchased previous one.
My biggest complaint about the glasses are the lenses ability to stay clean. They are high index with reflective coating, and I think you might get the same result with goggle4u sites and all too. They must be using the same or similar source for lenses, to keep costs down.
Great glasses, stylish, but if I get a smudge on them - what would normally take two sweeps of a cloth on my old regular pair, takes about 30 seconds (or more) of wiping to get off of the zenni's.
The 'never advisable' tissue surprisingly works better than cloth towels for them believe it or not, and to the lenses credit they are quite resistant to scratch (knocks on wood) considering tissue use regularly.

When I went to the eye doctor and got my prescription I asked if the prescription for contact lenses was different (it is) The doctor said yes but any place I took the prescription to would be able to get the prescription from my glasses prescription.
Acuvue Oasis gives free trials of their disposables (and I wasnt sure if I wanted them or my old Durasoft 3) For $15 Walmart Vision gave me a contact lens fitting and I got my free trial pair. When I got the free pair I made sure I kept the wrapping (and remembered which eye was which ) The wrapping has the prescrition on it.
I got my Durasoft 3 from ClearlyContacts.ca and they are PERFECT!

ClearlyContacts which is mentioned a few times throughout the site sells discount designer frames. They sell cheaper clearance frames as well, but also carry most major brands at a discount. And, they are in Canada.
As for the Zenni/Goggles etc quality, you will likely get the same answer from most people. The quality may not be the same, but it's all relative. I have had no issues with my frames/lenses from Zenni at all. They aren't designer frames, but they also didn't cost hundreds of $'s. I'd personally question more if the designer frames are worth what they charge rather than if the $12 Zenni frames are. Because the Zenni ones are without a doubt worth what you pay and more. I've never owned a pair of glasses where I thought "these were a great value and were worth $300".
If they are good quality, and the lenses are correct, I am content.

Just want to share my good story...
Been shopping around the past two weeks.... at conventional brick and mortar stores ie. lenscrafters, pearle vision, p-mall optical stores.... I got quoted from $300-$700 for a pair of frames with high index lens (1.67, my presc. is -7 in both eyes). All the prices had some lame gimmick like 50% of lenses or 30% off the total package. And to get the 1.74 high index, these jerkoffs wanted around $220 for just lenses on average
I go to clearly contacts..... $160 for a decent metal quicksilver frame with 1.74 lenses. Never will I buy glasses from a store.... maybe just in try some frames on and then go online and find a similar frame. Ordering another pair and turning them into sunglasses...

Hey, I was just thinking about posting to ask what happens with us folks needing a higher prescription. (And obviously, I decided to do so)
I have -7 and -7.25 in my eyes and so my cost will be as high as yours. But I was wondering what happens if I order a pair online and get 1.61 or god forbid, 1.57, will my lense be about an inch thick? Clearly Contacts says 1.67 is recommended and Zenni doesn't even recommend anything... would it be stupid for me to try and save money by getting lower index lenses? I don't want to look like Bubbles >:(

My eyes are pretty bad and I ordered 1.61 index. The lenses look fine. No bubbles look. I just measured and the thickest outside edge is 4mm.The thing I really like about the ZO lense is that they polish the outside edge. Doesn't seem like a big deal but it definitely makes the lense look less obvious. I am on my second prescription with ZO. Highly recommended.

I don't want to look like Bubbles >:(
i bought metal frames, thats why I went with 1.74 and also i guess after being quoted such high prices, $120 for lens plus $60 for the frame didn't seem so bad. But it should look fine with 1.67 but 1.61 or 1.57 might be better if you are getting plastic frames cause they will hide the thickness of the lenses. Either way, if you don't like it you can always send it back and get thinner lenses if you think they're too thick. You should be able to pull up a chart that shows the thickness of the lens on the internet or even on clearly contacts, not sure. But if you go 1.57 or 1.61 try to get a frame that is small the bigger the frame the thicker the lens will be

I just ordered 2 pairs of glasses from Zenni.
Their home page states that shipping is a flat 4.95$, without restriction.
Not true. After my order was completed, I was surprised to see I was charged twice the price for shipping: 9.95$.
I contacted them and got a reply (2 days later) stating that 4.95$ is only for the U.S.
I then (politely) replied that this restriction it's not indicated anywhere and that it borders on fraudulent.
They told me it's how it is and that's it. No refund, no excuse. Wow — really poor service.
Not to mention that it *is* fraudulent!
Another thing: Even thought they ship from China, they are not using the usual China Post Airmail, but (horror) DHL !
(Zenni poses as a U.S. company, but apparently most everything is done in China)
So I've got fingers crossed that I won't be screwed by the scandalous DHL / UPS / Fedex «brokering» fee (which did happen to me a few times).
If anyone has got a package from Zenni via DHL and care to tell if they were charged the «brokering» fee or not... thanks!

The shipping charge has always been more than the $5 the US gets charged. As soon as you change your country it gives you a higher shipping charge. I've got 5 orders shipped by DHL and no charges. They used to ship out of California, but lately everything has been drop shipped from China - it's WAY faster this way too, nothing to complain about.

From the home page of Zenni:
«Shipping & Handling Only $4.95 For Your Entire Order, Regardless of Quantity»
It's the only reference to shipping cost on their whole site.
On first page of checkout, shipping cost is not shown.
On last page of checkout, it shows 4.95$.
When changing the country, it does finally change to 9.95$, but too late and not obvious.
Anyway, when 4.95$ is advertised on main page — that's what is rightfully expected!
I've got 5 orders shipped by DHL and no charges.
THANKS for letting me know !

Called Lenscrafters (Erin Mills Town Center, Mississauga) and asked specifically about the "Savings applied to lenses" clause and they said the discount is applied on the entire package (frame + lens)... Not sure why you quoted the "Valid on multiple pairs" as not hot though.

I have not ordered from Zenni before but in the past when I did order from goggles4u i went with the 1.61 High Index. My prescription is almost identical to yours and with 1.61 you get a decent thin lens. I think it's definitely worth the extra for the thinner lens instead of going with the free standard thicker 1.50 lens. At the same time I am happy that I did not pay more for the even thinner but more expensive ones.

To add to my above post, you might want to take a look at the following link. It appears that with a prescription less than +/- 5.0 you only get a 1.57 lens regardless of what you pay for.

Hi,
I play hockey and I'm a goalie so I don't have much air movement is the mask. What kind of eyeglasses should I buy to wear when playing? I tried to put some anti-fog spray on my normal eyeglasses but after 15 minutes I could not see through them.
I'm having trouble with contact lenses since my eyes get dry.
Are these model ok?

Putting SHAVING CREAM on mirrors & glasses is supposed to work even better than "anti-fog" spray! You can test it out on the bathroom mirror before you shower.

Sorry if this has been clearly addressed in some past post, but I did not see one...
When purchasing online, how much 'deviation' from current eyeglasses could one allow for new frames re: temple width, bridge separation, lens width, lens depth, etc.?
For example, my current frames are: 140mm width, 20mm bridge, 52mm lens width. Would 142 or 138mm width be OK? Would 22 or 18mm bridge be OK? Anyways, you get the idea :)

The more important is the nose bridge and the lense witdth. How do you feel with your current oness? Thight, perfect or too large.
I'll give you an example of my case so you can understand. I have a very narrow face. I'm not the only one but lenses manufatcturers are too dumb to understand there's a market there. My current glasses have 50 lens width and 17 nose bridge. Furthermore, they are somewhat curved rather than plane. My next one would be ideally 50/16. Otherwise 49/17 or the same I have now 50/17.
So, for nose bridge, for me it's ideally 16 otherwise 17. So for you, it could be ideally 20 but 21 or 19 could be fine. Or it could be 20 or 21, or 20 or 19.

Makes sense :) I think you are saying that if the current 'widths' are OK, that shaving off a mm or two is OK as long as you add it back on somewhere else -- so that you end up with close to the same (correct) width overall.
When I was at the optician, getting fitted for new specs, I got the following 'vibes':
- the frame overall width ('temple width') had to fit my face
- the bridge had to be wide enough for my nose
- the lenses had to be deep enough for my prescription (now going to be 'progressives')
- indirectly, then, this put limits on the lens 'widths' as well, since all these 'widths' have to work out with each other
I'll check my 'new' spec measurements once I get my new pair, but I am investigating buying a cheap 'backup' set online -- I wish that places like Zenni would have a filter for lens width/depth/bridge/frame/etc!

Yes and no. Yes you can adjust the overall witdth but you must stay close to each width as much as you can. 2 mm off on the bridge is starting to be a big difference but on the lens width it's fine. So I will say +/- 1 mm on bridge and +/- 2 mm on lens width is fine as long as it doesn't add (or substract) up (+1 on bridge wdith +2 on lens width as this will gives you +2 +1 +2 = +7 mm...).

Hi guys, i just had a quick question. I just got my eyes tested and was told that they eyesight is normal but i have focusing problem. So need to wear glasses while reading (which i do a lot of due to school) and driving, computer etc
My prescription says:
OR - 02 ~ N1 (i'm not sure if its N or an infinity sign)
OS p1 - 100 x 090
I read through a few pages, and honestly have no idea where to begin. I would ideally like an antiscratch lens with antiglare and was quoted at walmart @ 128 + 38 (for lens) + cost of glasses
or i could just get glasses with lens which would be $ 38 + cost of frame
I really don't want to spend that much and would really appreciate any help (student budget)

Bought a pair of prescription sunglasses from Zenni Optical and another pair from Goggles4U
Zenni: everything was fine. Recommended
Goggle4U: it was being held at Canada Post waiting for me to pick it up. I was confused at first, but when I got to the Post office, I could see why. The packaging was SKETCHY. The glasses themselves were packaged very nicely between cotton balls and were in an eyeglasses case, but the glasses case was housed in a styrofoam brick, wrapped by a cloth-like bag, held together by string and gum (I said gum). My address was written by hand. Glasses themselves were fine though.

I recently ordered from Goggles4u.com and here is my experience.
The packaging was ok, and I didn't have to pickup from canada post, or have any customs issue. The glasses look great, and were well packaged inside the case with cotton and microfiber cloth. Now here is the issue I have: these glasses are just not comfortable. If I look straight, its ok, but anytime I look at an angle or move my eyes, the vision is somewhat awkward, its clear, but not very comfortable. Now I NEVER had this problem with Zenni glasses before, or any at a local optical here in Toronto, so I'm guessing something is wrong with the lenses. I have another pair $200 pair of glasses which I bought about 3 years ago (I rarely wear them as I usually keep it for backup) and it had the same size measurements as the one I order from Goggles4u. Its just more comfortable then the Goggles4u glasses.
For this reason, I can NOT recommend Goggles4u, I just though I would try them out since they have the 30% sale a few weeks ago, and I got my glasses for about $21.99 including shipping.
Frames: Great
Packaging: Good
Shipping: Decent (2 weeks?)
Lenses: Poor
I'll stick to Zenni for now

I am in the same boat as you.
I had laser eye surgery twice to try to get 20/20 vision, but am still left with a -1.75/-0.75 prescription. It is good for day to day, but when trying to track a puck, you need to see everything. I talked to my optometrist and a lady at Lenscrafters about what glasses would be best for wearing in a mask...they both recommended wearing a sport type frame made of titanium with really thin arms. I am ordering a few pairs from Zenni today to see how they do. Did you order the pair you specified? If so, how does it work for you under your mask?

COASTALCONTACTS deal: I just ordered and saved the $98 pricetag on a pair of Ray Ban frames with the code FREEPAIR129 :) You get a free pair of frames if you spend $129 or more. I spent $119 on the damn thinnest lenses for my high prescription, so I imagine this is a decent deal for those who need to shell out at least $119 for the 1.74 high index lenses anyway, and want brand names. So my total discount, 98 bucks! Hopefully the glasses will be great/well made.
Can anyone else confirm if they've had success with getting insurance (Manulife) for CoastalContacts?

You ordered from COSTAL contacts? They are the American version of Clearly contracts. A lot of people have had good experiences with clearly contacts, mainly because they often give away free glasses. I've read around that people have been able to claim with clearly contracts. Should be similar.

I just started scouting around for another set of glasses.
Previous ones came from Zenni and before that from Google4U - worked out well both times.
I find the hardest thing to pick is the frame.
This time I also looked at Clearly Contacts - it seems they measure frame width different than the others.
If I chose a wide frame like this one:
http://www.clearlycontacts.ca/glasses/frames/nascar-tony-stewart-05-lgm/prod25267.html?rsView=1
the measurement shown for the frame width is only 127mm, typical wide frames I have bought previously have a frame width of 140 to 146mm.
It seems from the diagrams that Clearly Contacts only measures the frame that the lenses sit in and don't include the portion of the arm in the front that adds a few millimeters to the frame on either side.
Anyone else notice that?
The glasses I have right now have an overall frame width of 140.5mm and a lens frame width of 124.5 both measured with a digital caliper.

I'll stick to Zenni for now
perhaps the prescription is OK but the lenses were cut off-centre
that's what happened with my order from Goggles4u which I just received today.

Is anyone having problems with Zenni Optical site? I've been trying to add items to my cart but it keeps disappearing and asking me to log-in. It's EXTREMELY frustrating.
Facing the same problem like you for the past few days . You need to register before you can make purchases. Go to the topheader of Zenni' toolbar and click My Account and register from there. Upon registration you could make the purchases.
Just curious, since Clear Contacts is located in Canada why not purchase from there, if price is not too far off.

Anyone here could help or advise on progressive (PAL) lenses. Which online eyeglass offer the best prescription PAL (progressive ) lenses. In terms of clarity, minimum distortion and uses quality lenses. Any suggestion.
Any progressive wearers care to share their experience on Zenni, Clearly Contacts or Eyebuydirect PAL (progressive) lenses.
Which one comes in best in terms of clarity, minimum distortion, coating and lenses technology used (all front surface, or back surface, mold digitalised lenses or both front and back surface and freeform).
Heard that Wal-Mart is using Nilon lenses and is this the same as Essilor Physio 360 (latest Essilor range for PAL). Coastal using Edimon lenses is this the same as Essilor range of ?XXXXX??????? ( which type of lenses it fall into ?).
Lastly, any advise what is the difference between the following :
a) Essilor Physio 360 and Essilor Physio 360 Enhanced (which is the latest innovation line for PAL lenses).
b) For Essilor Fortis is this the same as Accolade or Accolade Freedom or Essilor Varilux Comfort or Varilux Comfort Enhances or Varilux Comfort 360. Pls advise. Which lenses offer less or minimum distortion.
For a RX of OD Right : -400 sphere : -1.25 Axis : 005
OS Left : -425 sphere : -1.00 Axis : 005
what is the type of progressive lenses that anyone could recommend for minimum distortion, good clarity and reasonable price (value for money).
Please feel free to share and advise asap. Tks

To add to my above post, you might want to take a look at the following link. It appears that with a prescription less than +/- 5.0 you only get a 1.57 lens regardless of what you pay for.

Does googles4u have this problem also? Or just Zenni? I just bought a pair few days ago before seeing this post.

Here's my most recent experience with Zenni -- Unbelievable! I ordered on the evening of December 22 and my glasses just arrived via FedEx International Priority from China! I didn't ask for faster delivery, by the way. If you take into account the fact that there was an Xmess holiday (even if you don't) that's faster than my glasses would have been ready from the nearest local glasses place. I ordered a pair with Chinese characters on the temples, maybe they liked that and gave them priority. :-) Who knows? It's funny, from what I can tell, the order was completed just yesterday or on Tuesday. It came faster than it takes to get FedEx deliveries from Toronto. Go figure. The glasses themselves seem fine, by the way. I only wish Zenni used Paypal so I could avoid that cursed extra fee the credit card company charges on foreign currency purchases.

Paypal charges the exact same fee, it is built into the currency conversion. They take market price and then build their 2.5% commission into that rate.

I don't know if we're talking about the same fee -- yes, there's a commission charge for the currency in the first place, that's for sure. One never gets the rate that you see on currency sites. But what I'm speaking of is an amount above that. For example, my CT Mastercard uses the rate you would get on CIBC (I think they said it's CIBC). That's the rate you're speaking of. But if I then make a U.S. dollar purchase, they use that rate then tack on an extra X% for good measure. If you were to return your purchase, by the way, they tack it on yet again.
When I get my pay in via Paypal, the rate I get is identical to the one they use when converting for the credit card purchases. Anyway, this is off-topic for sure! To put it back on -- Go Zenni!! :-)

So were yours 1.67 as advertised? I received mine but the thickness was the same as the other glasses I have which are 1.57. Also the coating smudges easily and the prescription seems off. I emailed them with sample pics and they told me they would offer a free replacement but the thickness would be the same as it is already thinned. Anyone else have this problem?

Ordered 1 pair from Zenni on the Feb 8th - received in the 15th - exactly 7 days direct from China. +++
Ordered 2 pair from CC on the same day - still in progress - have not shipped yet. They are rimless and tinted though, so they do mention adding 3-5 days for that - we will see.
I had planned for the CC glasses to be my primary pair and the Zenni glasses to be spares, but the Zenni glasses are actually quite nice. They fit well and are very solid construction. Hope my CC 'designer' glasses are as good.

I actually wear my Zenni frames more than the ones I got from CC. There's something I like more about the lenses on them.
I have 2 pairs of glasses from Zenni that I have been wearing for almost 2 years now. One of the pairs I wear doing physical work outdoors. Both pairs have been completely fine. The ones from CC are good as well, but they cost over as much and oddly enough took a week longer to arrive.

I was very happy with my new sunglasses using Designer frames and progressive lenses from Goggles4u. My prescription glasses cost 500% more than my designer frames using the same prescription with coated lenses.
I also purchased the lenses with 100% tint and have no issue with them being too dark. The lenses are great for driving and can even be worn in low light conditions (indoors, driving at dusk, etc.)
No issues with delivery, shipping or customs.
I plan on purchasing yet another set from Goggles4u when they have another sale on.

My comments are probably a bit too late, but I'll add them anyway - maybe for someone else.
I bought two sets of bi-focals from Zenni and they were fine - good quality all around, I was happy especially for the money I paid.
Then I decided to spend the extra money to buy a pair of progressive from Zenni.
Wasn't happy at all - when I look through the glasses at a bit of an angle, ie move my eyes only without moving my head, the image moved out of focus.
Tried the same thing with my bi-focals, not a problem.
Called Zenni because I thought the progressives weren't made right - what they told me is that this is normal with progressive lenses.
I didn't really investigate further if that is actually true, I just ended up not wearing the progressives at all, they are just sitting in their case as an emergency back up.

What is the current opinion as to which place to get the best quality of glasses for a reasonable price?
I bought my last few pairs from Zenni and the quality was fine, delivery a bit slow at around three weeks.
I need to order another replacement pair since I managed to break the frame on one set - my fault, nothing wrong with the quality of the frame, however.....
my prescription is quite strong, -7.75 and -8.00, last time I ordered from Zenni they used a 1.57 lens, this ime around when I place the order I automatically get a 1.50 lens and no option to change that.
So I'm looking for another good quality place that either provides a 1.57 lens standard or at least allows that to be selected.

Check zennis faq, they have an option to order the same frame only at a reduced price so that you can put your original lenses back in a non broken frame. Works great if your old lenses are still in good shape. Only caviet is that they still have to have some of your original frames in stock still

Would I do it again: NO
Inexperience, spotty at best quality.
It is ghastly apparent that the folks assembling the glasses have no optician background whatsoever.
The PD they set for mine was wide enough for a elephant.

Sounds like problem I had with 2nd pair. The focal point of the lens is not where one of the eye's is.
When you look at the lens at an angle, or wearing the glasses, look at a monitor/TV at the far right/left, you WILL ALWAYS see chromatic abberation due to dispersion of different wavelengths. Extent of this effect is determined by Abb value. But, if you get this color fringing effect looking head on, they messed up cutting the lens.
Definetly, try to get refund or reflacement. Wearing bad glasses will not kill your vision (unlike what some people suggest). But, it will certainly be uncomfortable, and very quickly give you spliting headaches.

Thanks,
Couldn't find the FAQ on Zenni's web site but I called them and they showed me how to just order the frame.
Price was all of $3.48 plus shipping.
Hopefully it is the right one since I ordered a few pairs over the years, but for that amount of money, I'll take my chances.
Zenni also confirmed that for bi-focals with a line they only offer the 1.50 index lenses.
For a strong prescription, I don't think that is any good.
Firmoo.com seems to have a lot more options - also a bit more expensive than Zenni but it might be worth it.

I don't get any chromatic aberration with the progressive lenses no matter how I look through them.
The problem is that whatever I'm looking at ios only in focus if I look at it straight on.
Say the text I'm typing right now - with my progressive, if I look straight on it's in focus but when I turn my head right or left but keep looking at the text on the monitor (ie thus looking through the lenses not at the centre point, the text becomes blurry.
Happens both with the distant part of the lens and the reading part.
If I do the same thing with the bi-focals wth the line, the text stays in focus when I move my head and keep looking at the text.
Zenni keeps claiming this is normal with progressive lenses.
I only have to move my head a little bit off centre, maybe 10 degree or so and the text starts to become blurry.

I just bought frames from FramesDirect.com, here is my experience:
I started my search for a specific style of TagHeuer (7107) frames by looking at two websites, FramesDirect and GoOptic. I found the said frames at both sites but there was a pretty big price difference; the frames cost $374 at FramesDirect and $270 at GoOptic. I decided to buy the frames at FramesDirect because one of my friends had recommended the site to me and they had a PRICE MATCH GUARANTEE.
I purchased the frames on April 12, 2011 and put my request to price-match with GoOptic in the comments section as mentioned in their guidelines. A few days later I get a call from their agent saying that the frames were on backorder and the shipment will be delayed 3 weeks. It should be mentioned here that no indication of the availability of the frames was given to me before my order (there was no “check stock” option on their website). However, I didn’t mind the wait since I was in no hurry to get the frames. At this time I also spoke to them about my price-match request and the lady said that they would only be able to process it once they received the product from the supplier. I was happy with that explanation and didn’t pursue the topic any further.
Fast forward to May 4th and I see that the status of my order is changed to “shipped” and a few days later the full amount is deducted from my account. Naturally, I email them to ask what was going on with the price-match request. While I am waiting for their reply, I receive my frames, and I must say that they were in good condition and the shipping didn’t take long. I waited a few days and finally found time to chat with a live agent; the agent tells me that they have neither received my price-match request nor any email. After a little bit of back and forth, she says she has forwarded my request to the optician and that the optician will contact me shortly. The next day I receive an email from this optician saying that since my order was shipped on May 4th, she can’t do anything about it, even though their price match guarantees a refund within 15 days (which gives us time till May 19th). So, I reply back telling her everything that I have said just now and she replies back saying “here is a copy of the email I sent to you previously”.
W T F!!?
This is my story, I will let you judge for yourselves.
PS: Everything is covered by my insurance, so it's not about the money. I just feel duped.

I ordered some single vision glasses from Zenni. Nothing fancy, just added anti-reflection coathing. The glasses came within two weeks. But the AR coating is either pathetic or absent altogether. I can't tell. There is all kinds of glare in some angles of the glasses and a light source. I barely see such in my original pair.
It seems that ordering from Zenni is a crapshoot. Hit and miss. Good for others, abysmal for others. Oh well, at least I only paid $50 for it but I doubt that I'll order from them again.
Oh. I wrote them to let them know and they did say that I could the glasses to them and they would evaluate them and decide what to do. Nice of them to offer that option but really... Suppose I send them back and they tell me that there is nothing wrong with them. Then what? Stuck for the postage there and S&H to get them back. Another $20 in the hole? Nah...

I've been wanting a new pair of sunglasses for biking / fishing. Too bad they don't offer polarized lens... What's with the UV protection coating they sell? Shouldn't the eyeglass plastic already provide high UV protection?
Edit: nevermind, only polycarbonate has inherent uv blocking.
Bought a pair of wrap around ($49) + a pair of plastic ($14.90 for free shipping) - $8 facebook coupon = $55.90 USD shipped.
Edit2: Not too happy, but I'll keep them.
The pair of plastic's nosepad is too wide.
The wrap around feels cheap (gap between lens and frame in the inner corner; the temple plastic bit moves back and fore).
The box the wrap around came in was too small for the glasses. It can't even be closed.

I hope I'll be on the hit part because I just ordered a 100$ pair from them (poly+photo+clipon). Zenni wasn't my prefered because I'm looking more at a better eseller. But frames choices for my size (16mm nose pad with 50mm lenses (could be 49mm lenses) are extremely limited when it comes to choice. In fact I've been looking for some years now but my 8 years old adiddas eyeglasses can't do the job since a while.
I'll keep you updated folks.
Too bad buying eyewear is a losing game. From a retailer it's a rip-off and there is no decent etailer.

Just received my order today, rimless frame 322111, polycarbonate lenses with with zenni photochromatic.
The good:
+ it works. I don't have any vision problem other than I have to adapt to this new prescrition which is stronger than my very old one.
+ they are light
+ quality is decent, but not as good as my old alloy A752 addidas
+ nosepad are of rubber or silicon, not of plastic
+ great price for the quality
+ clip-on are polarised and are a bit larger than the glasses
+ choice of lenses shape
The bad:
- bridge is easy to change shape, could have been stronger.
- bridge is not as in the picture. it is curved not as much
- bridge is supposed to be 16 but seems to have the same width than my addidas which is 17
- clip-on have a cheap cliping system
Gobally I'm satisfied. Well, it works and cost me 100$, which is what I would had to pay in a retailer for the frame only. They are obiously not as good than my ~8 years old adiddas and will not last as long. But I very badly needed new glasses and it allow me to take my time to find something better.

Also, I suggest you take one step thiner lenses as they are average qualiy (1,59 seems to be more 1,57 and so on). As an example, my lenses are ~2,5 mm thick with this presctription:
OD SPH -1.75
OD CYL -1
OD AXIS 160
OD NVADD
OS SPH -1.5
OS CYL -1.75

All three came in great condition. I would recommend Zenni to anyone who is interested. :D

Has anyone ordered Transitions Photochromic from Zenni? I want to go with 1.61 (my RX of -4 is quite strong) for $139, but I want to make sure they don't substitute it with a lower-index no-name.
I did. The zeni photochromic. Works perfectly. I suggest you read one of my latest post in this thread for a first impression review.

NM, I figured if you're happy with zeni photochromic I'd do the same. ;)
Just ordered a pair for distance (polycarb+zenni photochromic+anti-reflection+polarized clip-on) and a pair of reading glasses (polycarb+anti-reflection). Came to $137.70 in total.
Still need to work on my shooting glasses, to get the polycarb+tinted option.

ardo,
Actually, I took my reference for zenni photochromic from a testimonial in another forum. And the results are the same for mine: works very well.

Thanks, good to know.
I also found out that 39dollarglasses can tint polycarbonate, and ordered a pair of shooting glasses for a whopping $53.85. They cannot apply AR coating to tints, but at 1/5th - 1/10th the price of 'real' shooting glasses, I can live with that.

Works fine here. Make sure you didn't copy any spaces, and keep the capital letter in case it matters.
Also, regarding customs, if your order is <$20 you'll have no problems, right? Does that include shipping, or is it only the item value?
Thanks.

89. Is the HST charged on the purchase of prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses?
No. The supply of corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses that are sold under prescription by an eye-care professional are zero-rated.
-- GST/HST Notice from Revenue Canada (http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pub/gi/notice253/notice253-e.pdf)
(AFAIK, if the contents are zero rated, there's no tax on shipping).

just wanted to share my experience with everyone. Maybe this issue has been brought up somewhere already. I've ordered twice from clearly contacts and both times used the correct latest prescription. First pair was with the high end index lens, second pair with the basic cheapest index lens. Both pairs were horrible: when using their glasses after about one or two hours I would get huge headaches and tension in my eyes, blurry vision sometimes. I sent these back and had the lenses replaced. When these came back, same story.
I really liked the frames so I took them to Costco and got the lenses replaced with their cheapest lens I could buy ($150, I know very expensive...but it was cheaper than the price quoted in the mall)
Now I've been wearing these for more than one week and they feel great, I can see well, I don't feel any strain on my eyes or headaches. Same as my old pair that I've used for more than three years, but is too scratched to be usable anymore.
So why do you think the lenses from Clearly were giving me a headache? Is this a known issue for others who bought from them?

All I know is that quality is different from one etailer to another. Too bad there isn't a rating system for these etailers. There is http://www.eyeglassretailerreviews.com/, while a very onteresting site, seems to be not updated much and it's only the site owner reviews.
It really be great to have a rating site for each prescription glasses retailer so we can have a idea of which one are the best and which one to avoid.

Yea, pretty much can guarantee that the lenses are not name brands like Nikon or Essilor. In fact, I don't think Nikon will even sell their lenses to CC. CC probably use some cheap chinese lenses they got wholesale from some Chinese boys. They do have to keep prices low in order to meet the bottom line profit target. They are also selling the old non digital lenses, all new lenses you buy from any Optometrist, and chain stores like Lenscrafters are all digital lenses. So you really do get what you paid for. Speaking as an Accountant, I really don't know how they can expect to compete in the long run. All these sales they are having, they are just shooting themselves in the foot. It is good for the consumer but it must be impacting their bottom line. I mean if the consumers are use to buying their glasses at such a low cost, why would anybody buy glasses from CC at their regular prices? Everyone would just wait for a sale!
Speaking from personal experience, I brought a pair of glasses from one of their sales a year back, and I had the same problem in terms of headaches. Returned it and the "new pair" that came back had the same issue. So I was wondering if they really changed the lenses at all! No way to check it aside from scratching the lenses and see if the new pair had the same scratch! Anyway, I just tossed it away ... paid $40 for the "lesson". I just went to my Optometrist for my glasses. Free adjustments and better service. Paying a bit more but I wear my glasses 16 hours a day for 365 days so paying more for better vision is more value for me than saving a few bucks.

I think you can take a pair of prescription glasses into an optical store and they will measure the prescription of each lens. I have a friend who did this for me and he's not an optometrist or anything, just an optician (he knows how to cut lenses). It was a while back so my memory is not 100%. Has anyone else ever done this?

Along the same lines, my wife has a pair of frames she loves. Is there any web optician that will put lenses in an existing set of frames? If not, where's the best place to have them done (Costco?)?

What you are referring to is a lensometer and standard issue at any Optometrist that sells glasses or Optical store. Some places will check it for free but the equipment is not cheap so they will most likely not do it unless a) you pay them or b) you are going to get a prescription from the Optometrist or buy something from the Optical.

Haven't heard whether there is a webstore that puts lens into frames as shipping cost for sending the frame to them and then sending it back to you might be too pricey. I would shop around a few prices and get quotes from several places including Costco, Optical stores and Optometrist. Couple of years ago, my prescription changed and I swapped my lenses out. I went to both Lenscrafters and a neighborhood Optometrist to obtain a quote. The Optometrist was $100 cheaper with the same Nikon lenses as Lenscrafters.
Just make sure your wife has a spare set of glasses she can use.

What is the difference between digital and non-digital lenses?
Also can the sunglasses which are sold on clearlycontacts.ca be ordered with prescription lenses? I don't see any area to input prescription data. BTW, they currently have 15% off sunglasses this month.

The difference is in the manufacturing of the lens. Digital lenses are made with equipment that shapes the lenses based on the prescription. Non Digital lenses uses lens mold to make the lenses. The result is that you see things sharper and your peripheral vision is better with a digital lens than a non digital one. Obviously, non digital lenses are cheaper to make so that is why CC and other discount glasses provider use this still.
As for the sunglasses, most places will do this but don't know about CC. The most expensive part of a sunglasses is the lens, so why would you want to buy a sunglasses and swap the lenses out? Just use a pair of glasses and put in tinted lenses.

Never dealt with this place before but have you seen the refund policy?!?! It is a complete joke!
http://goggles4u.com/refund.asp
These two policies in particular made me laugh ..
"The frame or lenses broke after few days.
Goggles4u.com is unable to provide any warrantees in such cases however you can always contact our sales department to solve such problems."
What this is telling me is that they are selling counterfeits frames or buying their frames from a non authorized reseller. Glasses purchased usually are guaranteed for one year from manufacturing defects. So if the arm or lenses fall out, you can get it fix free of charge. By offering no warranty, they are not standing behind their services or unable to obtain warranty from the manufacturer. This is no different than buying your glasses from somebody off the streets!
"Re-Lensing Service
In it very rare but sometime the frame received for re-lensing from the customer is damaged under production or lost. In such cases Goggles4u.com will only accomodate by paying US$ 10.00 to the customer and no further claims will be entertained."
LOL! This is an even bigger joke. So if I send them my frame for relensing and they screw up or lose my frame ... I GET A LOUSY $10?!?!? Awesome deal!
Sorry man ... but have you read the policy before you recommended this place?!?

I do not know where the lenses are made but the D&G frame I got from them was made in China. In their website, it clearly states that this is made in Italy. Moreover, our insurance company does not reimburse shipping, handling and insurance, so I ended up paying more for buying from CC. Here's the frame I purchased from them, http://www.clearlycontacts.ca/glasses/frames/dolce-gabbana-5063-357-black/prod28249.html

I bought glasses from lenscrafters. I find that one of the lens is blurry in the corners. Is this a manufacturing defect? I thought lenscrafters made good quality, but my old pair of glasses are just as sharp in the corners as in the center of the lens.
Will they remake the lens if I ask them to do so, or will they make excuses?

It definitely sounds like a defect. There shouldn't be any blurry on any part of the lens. Bring it back to Lenscrafters and they should take care of it for you. You probably paid a bundle for the glasses so good customer service is the least you can expect.

Hello everyone,
I have been a customer of googles4u in the past and was needing a set of eyeglasses. I checked the forums and saw that Goggles and Zenni appeared to be good choices.
I placed an order with both companies on March 27th.
I ordered from Goggles a semi rimless and from Zenni a rimless with magnetic clip on pair.
I received my order from Goggles today the 16th or April and it is perfect. Came with a case and a cloth but no screw driver or nose pads like the first time I ordered from them. Also when I ordered I told them that I was offered a 25% off for life discount for any future orders, which they honored.
I am still waiting for Zenni, checked today and appears to have arrived at customs in Ontario on the 13th, so may arrive tomorrow. I will let you know what arrives and if they are comparable.
Pricing was better with Goggles but not by much. Goggles was $28.27 and Zenni was $33.90.
Any questions fire me a msg.
Cheers!
EDIT: Just messaged goggle about no nose pads or adjustment tool and they are sending one right away..... :) great service from goggles

FYI,
eyebuydirect.com has recently changed shippers. They used to ship with USPS. Now they are shipping with "Canada Post Priority". I was dinged with a "$11.57" C.O.D. charge for a $13 pair of glasses, for which I already paid $9.95 shipping. I called eyebuydirect and they stated the shipping charge you pay is only to get the glasses into Canada. "Canada Post Priority" will then charge C.O.D for whatever the shipping is to your home address. In my case, it was from Mississauga to Mississauga, $11.75.
I called eyebuydirect and they will refund me this charge to my paypal "this time only". I tried to explain that having a surprise/unknown C.O.D. "shipping" charge will not work out too well for them in the future.

I recently ordered from zenni optical and received my order in about 3 weeks... Sad thing is there more stylish and comfortable than my old $300 pair xD $20 for a pair of glasses im willing to wait a couple more weeks for $280 less... I was going to order from clearly contacts but didn't really like any frames on there website.
I ordered 3/20/12 and couldn't be happier.
