I plan on signing up for an Esso Speedpass but can't decide if
I want to earn Extra points or Aeroplan points. I'll be linking
the speedpass to my CIBC Aeroplan Visa, so I'm currently earning
1 point for every dollar spent. Which is a better reward
program? Extra or Aeroplan?

I picked Aeroplan just because it was simpler to collect them and I already have a bunch. I don't really know which has a greater dollar value, I just presumed that they'd be similar enough that it wouldn't be worth belonging to another points program.

If you have an RBC Avion Platinum Visa, and are a member of CX, BA, or AA, you are better off crediting the purchase to extra. Once you have 2500 points, launder them to the RBC rewards program at a ratio of 2500:1500, then convert them to one of the above FF programs. You are now earning 1 mile/$1.67 spent, vs. 1 AP mile/$3. If the Avion/BA 50% bonus conversion promo reappears at the end of the year, you will earn 1 mile/$1.11.

Actually, depending on which CIBC Aero Visa used for the gas purchase(i.e. Aerogold = 1 AP/$ or Aero visa = 1 AP/ $2), there are additional miles
with Aerogold + aeroplan card at pump = 1 AP / $0.75 (i.e. 4 AP for every $3)
and Aero Visa + aeroplan card at pump = 1 AP / $1.20 (i.e. 5 AP for every $6)
granted, u dont get double AP when canada wins a hockey game :-0

I only mentioned the points earned at esso in my example. Too lazy to work out the earning details of both esso WITH visa included, but you also get 1 mile/$1 put on the avion visa.

I don't think that's the case now
It's double Esso points AFTER team canada wins a hockey game (unless I misread the e-mail that they do Aeroplan as well)
It's double Aeroplan AFTER 3 purchases of $20 and more on your Esso fillup
I use both right now.
- Use Speedpass/Esso Points for carwash mostly, or when we win a game for double points
- Use Credit Card/Aeroplan if there's promotion (1 AP for $3, and 1% Cashback on CC)
- Use Canadian Tire Gift Card if none of the above
