GTA - I was astonished and angry to hear a male DJ on 102.5 FM make a racist joke this morning. He and the female DJ were remarking on a newstory about a 33 pound cat owned by a family in China. He said jokingly "33 Ibs! In China, that would be breakfast, lunch, and dinner".

I want to send him an e-mail requesting an on-air apology. Does anyone know the name of the DJ? I heard this at 8:50 am this morning.

The radio station's website is:

http://www.1025fm.com/music.cfm

EDIT: Okay, requesting an apology is too far, but the DJ's comments were inappropriate. While they might not meet the definition of being racist, they are poisonous words that paint the people of China as uncivilized or barbaric. The great majority of Chinese do not eat cat or dog. It's just that they are not banned from doing so.

Not all Chinese people, and not all "people of Chinese decent" eat cat. But in China, you can purchase cat and eat it. This is a fact. Therefore, the joke isn't racist, but illustrating a point. Just because it plays into a stereotype you don't like doesn't make it racist. Your interpretation of it makes it racist.

For example, to claim that Iran is filled with Radical Violent Extremists isn't racist...its true! To claim that people in China eat cats isn't racist...its true! Anymore than its true that Americans are fat, and Germans smoke a lot.

Morning guy is Rob Lucas.

For for humour, yeah, it wasn't funny, but even up here in Canada, where broadcasters have a much shorter leash, DJs have gotten away with worse, being told by the Broadcast Standards Council that while their stuff was in poor taste, it wasn't deemed racist (no cites on hand, but I googled this stuff a few months back).

If it's an American station, well good luck considering you're a Canadian.

If it's a Canadian station, good look with your complaint. Morning shows are all about gaining listeners, regardless of method, so if you complain they will see that it worked. (Any publicity is good publicity)

A complaint against a Canadian show is just reinforcement that yes they are on the cutting edge, right where they want to be.

If you want to really hurt them, then just stop listening to the radio station.
