When LED's first became popular... I got a guy from China to ship em over here.
I sold a few trunk loads to random cornerstores and dollar stores around teh city and made a bit of cash.
It was kinda funny b/c i realized how popular they were b/c of RFD.

I started this thread cuz I'm interested in how some of us with more regular joe jobs can make a good profit outside of the "hourly rate".
As we know, big money comes from big business, but few make it to the top.

I've been lucky in real estate - not as a deliberate investment - but the homes I've purchased and lived in have appreciated nicely, and upon their sale, I've made a good bit of income in order to increase the equity in my next home.
More than $10K every time.
First house was $60K in 18 months.
Second house increased about $45K in about 10 years.
Third house increased about $70K in 3 years.
Fourth house, I'm enjoying right now ;)

I bought a Coffee Shop in 2002. Doubled the sales and sold it in 3 months and made $145,000.
That was my best money making experience, making $145,000 in three months.
In case you wonder about the capital gain...I still have tons of capital lost from the tech bubble.

Well, if you consider investing in stocks & real estate as a business idea, then it has happened many times before.

Probably Not... I dotn think tim hortons are flipped aorund as "turn key operations" often.
It was probably some indepedant shop he turned around.
Often people buy over other businesses to take over and run it themselves.
They look over old financial statements to see in fact if the store did good.. stuff like sales records and transactions. they evaluate the traffic flow of the area etc.

Was your coffee shop a CCPC? If yes, did you sell the shares of the company? If also yes, then the gain should be tax exempt if most case. Your accountant should be able to explain more.

Don't you think that each new house you bought also increased in price or did you do renos before you sold the old ones?!

yes and yes.
The gift in this scenario is equity that I didn't have to scrimp and save for - the house saved it for me by appreciating in value and allowing me to buy a bigger/nicer home in most instances.

My fiancee was having a hard time launching her bridal product business, so she signed up with a few mass-mailers and she just copy pastes the addresses from them and fwd's her own brochures out. lol
Needless to say, she's made about $200 in the last weekend.
