Just purchased an item on ebay from someone in the states. He's planning to ship with Purolator. Should I expect any outrageous broker fees like UPS?
*Excuse my stupidity, but the item is actually coming from Japan.

Purolator USA...however, they only work with large companies/orders...so your question is still worth asking...

From the link above, they use PBB Global Logistics. They usually bill you a few weeks after you receive the item. I think, you should be prepared for some non-small amount of brokerage fees.

I've received lots of stuff through Purolator. $5 brokerage fee plus GST and PST. Nothing to worry about.
If I remember correctly, anything sent AirMail Express (post office) from the states gets transferred to Purolator once it's in Canada. It might not be AirMail, but it's one of the American couriers.

I think the fee might be $8, but regardless, it's nowhere near the level of usury that UPS or FedEx charges.

Well, if it's from Japan, you might have some duty charges (depending on the item), but the brokerage fee is still $5-8.

Should be OK, ... oh wait, I bought a CD from a store in Japan. They shipped... well, Japan Post, so it got over to Canada Post here and there was about $10 duties on a $25 item.

actually, I have a question
are we obligated to pay the charges when they mail the bill to us? what will they do to me if I refuse to pay the charges?

they hand your bill over to a collections agency... if you still don't pay, your credit history is screwed.
