Please Help My Laptop!!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! I"M GONNA CRY!!!!!

i'll try to keep the story short

my 2 year old asus m6n, came with ddr266 200 pin 256mb ram, i found it slow, it has a centrino1.4, i asked for advice on rfd, someone sent me manual for my laptop, i (not a newb nor an expert with comps) took my laptop apart, well, all i did was flipped open my keyboard, this laptop has 2 ram slots, one under the keyboard, one on the botoom side of the laptop, my original ram was in the slot on the bottom side of the laptop. I took it out to look at it, to see what ram it is so i can buy a new one

i bought a kingston KVR333, at the comp store, i took out my original ram replaced it with new one, it worked fine

I brought it home, took out the new ram, put the old one back in, then put the old one in the slot under the keyboard, turned on my laptop, and this is what i get:

push power button
light goes on for 5 seconds
laptop turns off as if i did a hard turn off (as if i held the button for a few seconds)
5 sec later, laptop lights turns on by itself, but no screen, no nothing, i tried waiting for a long time, nothing, just the power light is on, which forces me to hold hte power button to turn off comp

I tried putting in different combination of the 2 rams in the 2 slots, the same happens, i got lucky once, and i went in to my comp's specs and the ram was fine, so i thought all was good, but nope, it was just that one time, i then tried to put my original ram back in the original slot and took out my new ram (so back to what my laptop was like a few days ago)

guess what, i get that stupid thing again (the little routine i described above)

Just got back from work.

So heard you're having abit of a ram situation. It was just a back luck of the draw when you did the upgrade. The 256ddr266 that you had just isn't compatible with the new ram you bought. It has nothing to do with the timing (CL 3.0 etc) or ddr266/333 but rather the "sync" of the name brands. Even major suppliers aren't sure which brand mix will work, since there are just so many brands of ram, quality and capacity. Which is why they usally show as many combinations as they can that they tested, which is written in manuals books/online.

The blue screen and reboot that you get means that the two sticks of ram installed don't "sync" well. (slight difference in the brand ram make). Like two different brand AA batteries that are both 1.5v 90mAh but are made differently, which is why you shouldn't mix and match. Oh course if it works then it works. You can't argue with success.

Your options are to install the 512ddr Kingston ram Only and it should be fine. The 512ddr wouldn't be as nice as the 768mb of ram that you where hoping for but will made a difference none the less. Taking the 256ddr no name and selling it. Alternatively you can try another brand name of ram instead of the Kingston by exchange. Still your options for brand names for notebook ram is limited and you may end up facing the same dreaded "blue screen of Death!" when you do hardcore gaming, stressing the ram and thus increasing chance of "sync" failure.

It's highly unlikely that the Kingston ram you purchased is defected. If it doesn't even work alone try change slots, problems still arise then exchange it for a different brand. If you do think it is the ram (to sooth your ego ;) ) download "memtest" burn it and boot from it.

There may be something with the slots on the motherboard when installing the ram. More common with PCI slots on desktop computers but does happen. ~When install the ram make sure the laptop is off off~ Ac adapter unplugged and battery removed. If this is a case then you're stuck with One slot to use. Update the bios for your laptop may be something that you can try, but likely won't help the situation. :confused:

Your situation is quite common so don't feel too bad about it. If you do feel like crying and require comfort, be with a close sibling if applicable or someone you feel comfortable with. Stay positive, keep a good mindset and your situation will be no more. :D "There's always a answer to every situation"

but the problem is....even when i only use one stick of ram...it won't work...

and i don't even get a blue screen, i get complete black screen....

haha, i'm glad that you're comforting me cuz you think i really actually want to cry, but i was just joking, i dont think many 19 year old cries about a ram/laptop problem, but thx!!!

I'll try the 512 on its own again and see what i get, if i don't reply this post in 10 min, then sigh, laptop isn't work....

i guess what i have to do now is sell my 256mb and get another kingston, or just stick with what i have at the moment, a 512.

thanks jordan, you're a lifesaver, but i feel sorry for you, now you're going to have some guy asking you his comp related questions whenever he's in a pickle(me)
