Paint Protection (DiamondKote, etc)

I bought a 2006 Honda Odyssey EX-L, Midnight Blue and the dealership is offering this Diamondkote paint sealant/protection pkg.
Some people I have talked to say it works, and swear by it, others say it is a waste of money.
I don't buy it, but on a $40k+ van maybe $250 is worth it.
What say u?

This is not a good idea. Ask any detailer, a paint sealant offered by a dealership is a waste of money. If you want your car to look as fresh as the day you bought it, there is more work involved than applying a $250 "sealant." There are many synthetic sealants you can buy and apply yourself. Sealants last AT MOST, up to 5-6months. A bottle of synthetic sealant from Meguiars costs only about $20CDN. You can apply it yourself and save $250.

Save the $250 and spend it on something else.

Diamond Kote is a paint sealant and it isn't worth the price...you can buy your own quality paint sealant at crappy tire and do it yourself...wash your car / apply it/ buff it out..that's it.

For a $40 000 van the dealership should absorb the $250 price tag of the paint sealant.

I did have the sealant on a van once and it had to be re-applied every 3 years. It does make the vechicle shine.


I bought an 01 Ranger, and every summer I apply a paint cleaner and a polish. I use Zaino Brothers products, recommended by the Mustang Car Club.

It is generally well known in the auto sales business that the "extras" that the business manager tries to sell you after you've purchased the vehicle is generally a waste of money from the consumers' point of view and a great source of revenue for the dealer. For example, a dealer may charge you $90 for seat fabric protection. But in reality they're spraying your seats with a $5 can of 3M seat protector which you can buy from CDN Tire and apply yourself in a few minutes. However, depending on the general reliability of your make and model of new vehicle, some of the additional warranties maybe a good idea.

In regards to your paint protection........save your $250.

I am going to put that $250 into an Ipod intergration setup or a DVD player for the kids in the back.

I find Zaino products to be better than DiamonKote's and you should try to do it yourself. I didn't even bother with the $400 package on my $80K car with the dealer. Get a Zaino kit for around $100 and spend 1 day on it and you are done..
