Details on exactly what happened are still sketchy, but it appears a thief decided to take one of the big rigs for a joyride around 1pm when crews answered a call in the Steeles and Dufferin area.
While their attention was focused elsewhere, a man got into the truck, put it in drive and spirited it away.
Cops began chasing the vehicle, which is reported to have hit some cars as the man tried to elude police.
It’s also said to have gone through some red lights, sped past a school zone and reached speeds of up to 100 kilometres an hour - all the time with lights and sirens flashing.
When the man reached Islington Ave., local cops decided it was too dangerous to continue, and called off the chase.
But when he entered York Regional Police’s jurisdiction, authorities there took up the hunt and were astounded by how far the truck had been driven.
It wound up being abandoned in a ditch near Highway 27 and Kirby Side Road in Kleinburg.
Cops reportedly found their suspect running through a nearby field and managed to corral him.
