I just picked one up to call a friend in Japan since I thought it would be cheaper than what Fido charges me. Unfortunately the sound quality, volume, and latency seem a fair bit worse than with the regular Fido long distance. This is the first time I've ever tried a prepaid calling card. Is this normal or does it vary depending on the card provider?

Also, I didn't work it out exactly, but it seemed to charge me nearly 3x the stated 7.5c/min stated on the card. I assume that has something to do with the "certain overseas destinations have higher rates for calls to cellular phones" disclaimer on the back.

yea you kinda have to continually search around until you find one suited for the country you call a lot. some cards charge the rate listed, but once you hang it, it charges a fee so you pretty much have to use up the entire card in one sitting. thats from my experience with prepaid long distance cards. maybe try skype?

She doesn't have internet access on a regular basis so Skype isn't an option. I think I'll just stick to regular Fido service for the moment.
