How come some times when I enter a public washrom (ie. toronto reference library, big restaurants) that I have to enter through two sets of doors?
What is the purpose of the extra door?

Most of the time it's for extra privacy, some urinals are positioned so that they can be viewed in a straight line from the entrance where anyone can stand, so they put a double door to prevent this.

I'm sure it's privacy. The newer large washrooms use an S shaped hall entrance with no doors to get the same privacy but at the same time allow loud noises out (eg, safety feature)

probably to keep the stink in the washroom as well.

Yeah, like an airlock.
That's what I was thinking too, some people can really drop some lethal bombs in there.

Yes I have seen this in Nanaimo. No Doors. Very sanitary when you think of it. No need to grab a filthy doorhandle.
Washrooms with doors, its funny. People wash their hands and then grab the dirtiest thing on the way out. The door handle, filthy with bacteria and germs that are left behind from the No Wash Hands people. I use a paper towel to open those doors. Come to think of it, all public door handles are filthy.

they have two doors to spite you, especially when you have to take a huge dump. so that's 3 doors that get in your way  . the two entrance doors and the toilet stall doors!

In the olden days, when attacks from the British or American forces were all too common. Washrooms were often the most secure rooms in a building (no windows, thick walls to contain all the pipes etc) - yet they also still had running water and of course washroom facilities. So they were built with two sets of doors so that if an attack occured both sets could be barricaded, and with basic food rations people could hole up in the washrooms for weeks to wait out an attack.
I guess they just continue the tradition of two doors despite the fact that things are relatively peaceful here in Canada now.
History is truly fascinating.

Anyone ever been to the club called Schmooze in the club district?
Supposedly the wall behind the girls toilets IN the stall is a see through one-way mirror, meaning the girls on the toilets doing their business can see the people on the other side washing their hands, and the section where you wash your hands is for both women and men...but the people washing their hands can't see the girls in the stall.
Some girls dont like to use the stalls because even though no one can see, it's intimidating for them. Usually when I wash my hands there where they can see me, I usually stick my tongue out at the mirror and I wink, just in case there's a girl on the other end using the stall and I act like I can see her...hehehe

Nice.
I like the ones where the doors are clear, but when you close and lock them, they cloud up.

I touch the door, and yet I'm healthy as a horse, give or take the occasional cold.

Just think of it this way...every time u touch the handle, that handle has been touched by some dirty guy that didnt wash his hands and had just held his schlong with some STD at the urinal, and/or just unloaded his breakfast in the stall and wiped with that hand...
Those germs are now on your hand and spreading all across your skin. I sure hope I don't shake your hand one day...

This reminds me of the funny scene in 'The Sopranos' where Paulie says something "how can you wear shoes with laces on when you use the urinal (ie your long laces would touch the floor and hence be in contact with the "fluids on the floor")".
Then when you would later untie your laces your hands would be in contact with the 'you know what'.

So the TSP gang can get away with doing the things they do....... They pay off $$$$$ to whoever cleans the washrooms to get away with their deeds.
The extra door hides the violent flushings and screams.
Chuck Norris runs this gang.

If i have to take a #2 in a public washroom i usually use like half the roll of toilet paper it just feels dirty in there.
And if theres no paper towels to open the door on the way out, gotta use the pinky finger or wait for someone to come in and you can sneak out.

I hate places that have the doors push IN, but pull OUT.
I mean.. it should be pull the door when going in, then after you do your business you can wash your hands and just push the door open with your body.
I hate washing my hands and then being forced to touch the door handle to open, as I know too many do not wash their hands.
