First, let me confess I know almost nothing about computers, hardware or software - except how to use mine for what I want to use it for.

I have Norton AntiVirus installed on my machine.

Lately, I've had pop-up windows from WinAntiVirus telling me I have (insert high number here) of threats on my computer, which my current anti-virus software is unable to detect. I also seem to have rather odd pop-up windows appear when I select other web-sites I visit frequently, like RFD, or PCFinancial, etc.

When the WinAntiVirus window first came up, I thought it looked legit. I clicked on a few things, and eventually it told me for $29.99 it could continue. Then I started shutting it down.

I tried the remove program thing from add/remove menu - but I'm afraid the nasty thing still resides with me somehow.

It's now telling me I'm at risk for the Beagle virus. Is this thing legit? Is it a virus in itself?

How the heck do I make it stop?

Jeeezuz.. you fell for it. Don't ever click on a pop up that tells you to click on it.. :D ..

Anyway.. the damage is done. Shut down and reboot into safe mode. (F2 or F8)... run your Norton Antivirus .. and whatever other antispyware software you have (you should have at least Ad-Aware and/or Sbybot). That should do the trick (hopefully).

If by any chance you still get pop ups (meaning there is still a problem).. report back.. and then we'll go into step 2.

Do a search in this forum for "winfixer", there are several good threads on how to get rid of it.
