I've been with Rogers Express for a while now and always had good speeds between 350-450KB/s, since they recently changed their pricing structure I decided to switch up to Extreme since it's only $3 more. So I picked up a different modem today, plugged it in, and my download speed is only 250KB/s. What's going on? I should be getting twice the download speed, not half of it

phone them and find out

in my experience, rogers tech help has been useless at best

figured I'd ask here first before phoning them and banging my head against the wall

Do a speed test with this:

http://speedcheck.rogers.com/

give the results to rogers tech support if they are not up to par.

It's definitely your flux capacitor.

what was the original modem and the new modem

Are you downloading from the same site?

The express can only go up to around 375kB/s with the old 3 mbps connection. I dun think u could have attained 450 unless it was for the first few sec of a download.

Go here and test ur connection and see if u get that 7mbps.

http://performance.toast.net/

Click "show all hosts"
Select: TOAST.net (CA)
Test Shuttle + Text

See if u get around 7mb

the speeds posted were a constant average downloading files from newsgroups through the same server that has always given me good constant speeds

the Rogers speed test shows 3.74Mbps, and the toast.net shows 687Kb/s

old modem was a Toshiba, current one is a Motorola. maybe I should exchange the flux capacitor? ;)

guess I'll give the buggers a call

I called them, they reset the modem in their system or something

now I'm getting 5mbps, still not the advertised 6, I'll give it another day before I harass them again

see, their tech team isn't totally useless after all

Oh man this is dissappointing!

I get low speeds for my Extreme connection.

That tester gave me 4.72Mbps download and 856kbps.

I guess the upload is within range, but the download certain isn't. Where's 6Mbps?!

When I originally upgraded, I was connecting to my router using an old 802.11b card. I was able to get consistant 3mbit but since the limit was 11mbit, there was overhead that was bottlenecking the cap.

Perhaps this is your situation? If so, try cabled.. or a higher rate wireless. :P

I know it advertises 6mbit but that is only under the perfect criteria. For the record, regular highspeed is capped out at 384kb/sec (3000kbit divided by 8)

Seems plausible, but why am I only getting 4.72 and not 6? I certainly don't have the overhead issue.

I'm running a wired Gigabit network with a Gigabit NIC in every machine, as well as my network equipment being Gigabit.

no idea but my express does the rated speed of 5MBit/384. It's just about 4700/390 for me....Extreme should be 6...

heh this is not so much the case with mine actually sorta backwards.
im only on express, yet i get Extreme download speeds, according to that rogers speedcheck. I clock at 4.97 Mbps whilst my upload is slightly higher, at 395 kbps

anyone know why my download speed is higher than its supposed to be?
heh, not that it bothers me or anything :D

Pay the proper monthly fees and you'll get your 6Mbit.

check ur email for rogers newsletter:

Faster Speeds in the Express Lane

Your Rogers Yahoo! Hi-Speed Internet Express service just got faster! We've taken connection speeds from 3MB to 5MB, that's a 60% increase in speed for downloading content. Now you can do more of what matters to you, including downloading games and music, sharing photos with family and friends, all much faster than before. And not only is this great upgrade free of charge, it's already happened and it's as simple as restarting your modem for the new speed to take affect.

Oversized Rooster, so before you had 5Mbit service and you were getting 350K-450K/s speeds? That equates to 2.8-3.5Mbit.

So now that you signed up for 6Mbit, you should be about 1Mbit more than before.. which it sounds like you are. Now you are getting 4.7Mbit.. which is 1.2Mbit faster than the high end of your 2.8-3.5Mbit, that you claimed previously.

Is this correct?

Before, even when I had the motorolla modem with extreme connection I was getting 100kbps. I was really angry with them so I called them up and they said they would send a technician. The technician came by and said my signal coming from my house is too weak. So he said he couldn't fix the problem so he called a group of guys to get the job done. Fortunately they did fix the problem.

I find Rogers to be the worst at dealing with signal problems. I can connect to my Motorola modem at http://192.168.100.1/signal.html and look at the signal levels:

Downstream Value
Frequency 615000000 Hz Locked
Signal to Noise Ratio 37 dB
Power Level 8 dB

Upstream Value
Channel ID 4
Frequency 32496000 Hz Ranged

Power Level 47 dBmV

The upstream signal is the one where the reliability becomes an issue. Last few days the signal is at 47 and it used to be 40 db. I call Rogers and they like to tinker with the INSIDE wires and not get their butts in gear and fix the area but pass the buck and say "oh your hookup is wrong". 12 years never had a inside problem.. always the outside wires.

I tell you if there was no cable monopoly, Rogers would have a LOT less customer base then they have now because of the service they give customers is crap!

This is what I get:

Frequency 561000000 Hz
Signal To Noise Ratio 35.2 dB
Power Level -8.9 dBmV

Upstream Value
Channel ID 11
Frequency 21968000 Hz
Power 51.0 dBmV

That's from my local monopoly cable company.

Power level should be better and the -51db is pretty bad.
