Couple of question about Nikon and Essilor:
- Is Nikon Seecoat worth it? Is it worth the $60 extra over HCC ICE
- I'm a bit confused about Essilor - how can I tell what I'm being sold? If I buy a pair of glasses with Essilor Crizal Forte AS 1.60, I know I'm getting an AS 1.60 lense but I don't know any other details (such as UV protection, reflection, etc). The Crizal Forte part is the coating only isn't it?
Seecoat is good for certain people. So it is really depends on your prescription and expectation.
Whoever sell you the lenses (Crizal Forte in this case) should be able to tell you how to tell the different. Coating reflection colour is one way to tell.
Yes, Crizal Forte is coating only.

I just got my new prescription at -450 and -425. I am wearing ic berlin glasses at the moment and would like to just get lenses for them. Could anyone suggest me a great place to buy lenses for them? I don't want transition lenses, just single vision but not generic either. How much would I be looking at? I'm guessing it will cost me $250-$300 for Nikon or Essilor or anything of good value. Your help and advice would be appreciated.
I would go with Essilor 1.67 lenses with ic berlin frame.

There should be light pinkish reflection colour with ICE coating compare to Seecoat

My partner with OD -5.50 and OS -6.00 went with a Gucci 2979 frame (thick plastic). We were told that there wouldn't be much difference between Nikon NL3AS (1.6) and NL4AS (1.67) for that particular choice so she opted for the NL3AS (1.6). The frame/lenses were ordered today.
Do you think it was a good choice? Should she have chosen the 1.67? It's hard to justify spending an extra $100 when you cannot tell if there is going to be a substantive difference.
To determine the actual lens thickness, your partner's pupillary distance and the frame eye size is important. The store should be able to tell you outcome thickness different by calculation.

Polarized lenses do comes in different colour, but not clear. It will not help with glare for night time driving. You can look into to DriveWear Lens, they are good for Bright Ligth to Low light condition.
Thanks, this looks interesting, but I was wondering for night driving where headlight glare is the biggest nuisance. Any other possibilities?

Could you please explain how to calculate? Thanks in advance!
In general, Eye size+bridge size should be equal to patient pupillary distance total to use the min. thickness of lens being cut from the lens blank.
Sorry, can't explain much here with thickness calculation, it's depends on the index of lens, actual frame size and pupillary distance. It's all the formulas from school. The fitting Optician should be able to give you the answer.

I've been trying to buy a pair of Alain Mikli from one of the stores listed on their website in Toronto, but seems to have some trouble. Paid a deposit and dropped off my prescription two months ago, keeps coming back to tell me the frame is on back-order, and finally a day ago told me that "they had an argument with AM, since their sales are slow so AM banned them from ordering new stock, that's why my frame is on 'back-order'".
Is this the case for name brands to do this? Sounds kinda BS to me.

Any recommendations for glasses that would work well for an asian face? Something that would accommodate a low/no nose bridge and be comfortable for the temples.
Thanks.
Try asian glasses store :p
F P-mall. I'd go to First Markham Place
Chinatown Optical & Minh Chau or something in Chinatown is sweet.
As for brands, I think Pro Design offers a lot of plastic frames with a nose pad.

I have a question about my prescription.
I just had my eyes tested and I got these results :
-0.25 -0.50093
-0.25 -0.25087
My friend told me its nothing compared to him but I can't see my teacher's writing from far even if I try my best. That's why I went to get my eyes tested. I don't think my vision is that bad but is it bad enough to justify the glasses purchase?
Thanks.

Hi everybody,
I need some assistance. My RX is:
R: -2.25, -0.75CYL, AXIS 1deg
L: -2.5, -1.25CYL, AXIS 153deg
I'm about to get a new frame for myself and it would be IC! Berlin Ibrahim.h model. The seller offered to add Transitions lenses which are 1.5 (or Essilor Airwear Lens if I dont want transitions). My friend is an optometrist (unfortunately his shop doesn't work with IC Berlin) and he told me that IC Berlin frames need a 1.6 lenses at least. What do you think, will 1.5 transitions "work" in such an "open-end" frame?

Can someone give me any tips on how to completely clean my glasses? I've been wearing glasses for a couple of years now and I was told the best and cheapest way to clean it (without buying those sprays) is to just rinse it under the tap and wipe it with a damp tissue paper. That kind of does the trick, but it never completely cleans it. There's always some sort of residue or streak remaining on the lenses afterward. It can annoy me sometimes, but I guess I got use to it for the most part. Now I want to know if there's a better way to clean the lenses?

Hi, will I have any problems if I get a Nikon 1.67 in one eye and 1.6 in the other? One eye has -4.75 and the other -3.00? Will I get a headache or anything like that? Also is it worth it to upgrade to SEEMax which has the custom digital surfacing?
Thanks

Can anyone tell me what the warranty is on the Nikon 4 lenses? I bought my glasses just under 2 months and there's a deep scratch in it and I have no idea what caused it. The place where I bought my glasses from sent them back to the lab and they're telling me that the best they can do is give me 50% off a replacement lens ($so $75 instead of $150). Does this sound right?
Thank you in advance!

might be not related - i apologize if it it isnt. but where can i buy plastic frame glasses for cheap, the black 'nerdy' kind? Squareish.
H&M no longer sells them I believe, and Bang On 's glasses are rounded. I plan to wear them casually so getting perscription glasses is too expensive. Any advice on where I could check would greatly.
Thanks. I live in GTA.

I ordered a pair of glasses that are 1.74 lenses. How do I know if they are actually 1.74 and not 1.67? Is there a way to tell?
The new glasses I got seem to be a lot thicker than my old ones, that's why I'm asking.
Thanks in advance.

My RX:
OD: -10.25 CYL: 3.75 AXS: 022
OS: -11.50 CYL: 3.00 AXS: 155
Optician recomended NL4 1.67 Nikon Seecoat lenses.
However i have been reading about the 1.74 lenses NL5, wondering with my high RX should i be getting the 1.74 index lenses.
Thanx
Also howcome the abbe number on the 1.74 lens is higher then the 1.67 ? 33 vs. 32 . I though the higher the index the lower the abbe number? So i would actually get thinner lenses with 1.74 index and better vision since the abbe number is 33.
Ideas ?

My prescription is in the 6~7 range and I was going to get the 1.74 but the optician told me I would be wasting my money since the frames I'd chosen weren't that big. He compared my frame with a larger one and said that the area of my small lens would be pretty much same as the 1.74 - once the frame gets bigger, that's where you'd see the higher reduction...on the edge...
Hope this makes sense...it's how I understand it anyway...

If you know your frame dimensions, try this calculator:

It'll tell you how much of a difference it'll make in terms of edge thickness.

From the consumers stand point, no. It can be thicker due to your new frame and/or perhaps your RX went up.

Is your cyl written in + or - ? The outcome of how thick your lenses will be affected mainly by your PD and the size of the frame. Ask your optician if s/he offers 1.74. Unless you're particularly sensitive then the difference may not matter (ie. chromatic abberations). Chances are with a -3.75 you're going to get surfaced lenses anyways, so if your frame isn't particular large, your frame will be factored into the equation of how the lenses will be made to make it as optimally thin in that index as possible.

If you're looking to get prescription frames (not the sunglasses frames) and having your lenses tinted or polarized, then generally anything is game. However, if you're looking at getting actual sunglasses frames then certain ones may fit better than others. It's hard to say what would and what wouldn't work, but your optician would certainly be able to help you with that. What kind of sunglasses are you looking for and do you care who makes your lenses? For example, you could get Serengeti sunglasses with prescription from Serengeti themselves and it'll be using their lenses or you could opt to get Serengeti s/g with prescription lenses from companies like Nikon, Essilor etc., tinted or polarized edged into the sunglasses also. The latter most likely being the cheaper route.
The cost really varies depending on where you shop as your lenses will be made to order instead of stock lenses. Some places may charge you little extra for a tint or some may charge you a lot more b/c they aren't stock lenses. It really just depends on their pricing model.

Thanks for the reply! I'll be claiming them through insurance that covers $150, another, I'm not sure yet (Green Shield). I don't really care about who makes the lenses as long as they are compatible with my frames. The reason I want actual Sunglasses frames is because I really dislike the look of transitional glasses hence having prescription frames, tinted/polarized would give me that same transitional feel. I'm looking for some variants of aviators or wayfarer. I have a pair of Wayfarers now but I don't have contacts so they don't really work for me when I'm driving...

Wayfarer will most likely work well with prescription lenses. If you like the pair that you have now, try calling around for prices on how much plastic tinted lenses will be. Basic choices for the tint usually will encompass the colour of the tint such as brown and grey and how dark you would like it. You could also ask for a gradient look if you'd like and have a AR coating on the backside of the lens.

People most commonly associate bi weekly or monthly contact lenses with the # of wears they can get out of it as opposed to the actual duration of them. So no, you should not stretch your bi weekly lens across a month or two just b/c you haven't worn it 14 times. If you have not worn CLs before it would be a fantastic idea to go see an optician for a CL fit (which many offer for free) and they would be able to educate you on the choices available to you that would work best for your lifestyle and need.
Also, it's important to note that Clearly contacts does NOT always offer a better price than buying it from large chain stores. If you're looking @ bi weekly CLs such as Acuvue Oasys, try shopping around and you'll see that Clearlycontacts may actually be more expensive (+ most places will probably price match it). Buying a year supply will usually give you a bigger discount also ;)

You can put on almost all coatings with your transition lenses. Whether it be a generic anti-glare and scratch or a premium coating like Crizal, Crizal Alize, or Crizal Forte. Different companies will have their own branding of what they offer; whether it be anti-dust, anti-smudge, hydrophobic coatings, easy clean, etc., (for example: Nikon HCC Ice, seacoat, etc).

I believe it is unlikely, but possible. More likely than not, most places will not offer you the service of adding an anti-glare coating after the fact.

Costco's prices are $209.00 for a Crizal Forte. A few specialized optical stores here for the same lense is anywhere from $550 - $640. I've phoned around to about half dozen of them and they're consistently in that range for 1.74...

Maybe the $550 - $640 are for Bi Focal lenses? $209 is a pretty good deal but unless you buy frames from costco you have to pay allot more fees... The reaason I did not purchase the lenses from Costco is because I didn't want to buy one of their crappy style frames that everyone else had, I preferred to use my own frames that I had bought. They charge a fee for using my own frames plus they ship them to a lab to have the work done and they are not responsible for any damage while in transit unless you buy costco frames...

For 1.74 in Crizal Forte, it's actually quite a good price if they are willing to give it to you without buying frames from them. Most of the big retail chains should be around that pricing if they can give you 50% off lenses.

Dunno if this was answered, or if you still need to know, but I just bought a pair at Eyestar Optical at Square One. They have a few locations around the GTA. Not sure if they all have the same selection so might wanna call ahead to check out.

What is the minimum thickness (at the centre) of an Essilor 1.74-index lens? Mine seem pretty thick at around 2 mm...
Keep in mind that it has to pass safety standards, but also are you measuring at the center of your currents specs or @ where your pupil would be in the lens?

If I bought titanium frame sunglasses and accidentally sat on them resulting in one of the lens popping out and minor bending in the frame, how easy is it for the retailer to fix this?
is this sort of stuff common?
Hard to say w/o seeing them, but if nothing snapped then it should more than likely be an easy job for the retailer to reshape the frame and to reinsert the lens.

Centre of pupil (thinnest part of the lens).
My previous 1.67-index lens has a thinner centre thickness than this Essilor 1.74-index.

I am buying some sunglasses. How is this for lens brand and quality?
-Optical quality, SOLA by Carl Zeiss lenses offer 100% UVA/UVB protection .
I also have the option of paying extra $40 for polarized lenses, the sunglasses I want are around $140 w non-polarized.
it seems good overall, just want to be sure.

hi guys, need advice from the experts here regarding lenses. I'm looking at getting a pair from a shop in downtown TO. the guy is quoting me $159 for Essilor 1.67 Crizal or $300 for Essilor 1.67 Crizal forte.
does $159 for Essilor 1.67 Crizal sound right? Costco said $200 for the same lenses. what am I missing here? I really doubt that this small shop can beat Costco. I'd like to get glasses from this place because I like the frame they have but I don't wanna get screwed on the lenses especially since I have a high prescription.
thanks. any advice would be appreciated.

Looking to purchase Gucci 2769 in Black size 49
What online retailers are trustworthy ?
for that or Tom Ford from your earlier post- you can always ask Laurier Optical to order items from you. I was told they can order most of the designer brand and they usually have many catalogs for them.
no idea of price.

Are poly carbonate lenses just as likely as plastic lenses to get scratches from cleaning with a cloth?

Well I just scratched my NL5AS lens. With metal. My heart is broken right now....
Is there any way to get this fixed or does this mean the lens will need to be replaced? If it can't be fixed, is there a place in Toronto that has a good price for those lenses?
Thanks.

I have a quick question about eyeglasses - lenses. I have two pair of glasses. Both glasses have the same prescription on the lenses.
Glasses 1: I look through the lenses and look at the monitor. The text looks a bit smaller or thin.
Glasses 2: I look through the lenses and look at the monitor. The text look more bigger.
The only difference is that Glasses 1 has a nose pad and Glasses 2 doesn't.
I'm not sure if there are different types of lenses. But, I feel that "Glasses 1" might be better quality than Glasses 2". Is it possible?
Thanks

just means glasses 2 is closer to your face/eyes
unfortunately, i don't think there's standard distance from lens to eyeball... i think this is why i see much clearer/larger with contacts

I have a quick question about lenses.
Is it possible to make my lenses thinner for a cost? Prescription is around the 5.00 range and would like to create thin lenses if possible. Does anyone know where or which store has the ability to perform the service? Thank you.

pretty sure most opticians would have this available to them, as my previous one was able to do this for all of my wife's lenses, though it did cost more (that could either be her ripping me off though)

I have a -9.00 prescription, and I would like to know what type of lense will be best suited for myself.
Preferably a pair that is light and thin because I will be wearing it everyday...I want to get a good quality lense one but not super expensive, I'd say less than $300 for the lense part...Is that possible??

You should check out OPTICAL LOFT in North York. I got my 1.74 with coating lenses for under $300 I believe. The lady is super good but only there on Friday and Saturday.

I have heard that poly carbonate lens is easier to be scratch in compare to plastic. Especially if it doesn't have good coating onl.

I was being introduce to palarized lens when looking for sunglasses. They were very good to try and you will not regard it. Love it in bright day!

Hi,
I had a pair of Rayban Aviator frames with prescription sunglass lenses for a few years. Recently, one lens fell out a broke and the other is chipped. Time for a new set. Rather than buy all new frames and fit lenses, I have the existing frame which I'd like new sunglass lenses fitted. I also have a current eyeglass prescription from a doctor so an eye exam is not necessary. I specifically want glass lenses, tinted, with anti-scratch coating; I don't want polycarb or plastic lenses. Is it best to approach an optometrist for purchasing new lenses or would a better deal be had from an optician? I feel that the optician might be incented to sell me both lenses and frames, upping the total cost.

I need to update my glasses prescription and I am looking at Nikon lens. I am not very confident with the specification or what I need. Foremost, I would like to have all the necessities such as uv, scratch resistant, etc. I would like double coating and not too thick or too thin. What's the price quote on that? Or what am I be looking at?
I'm not willing to spend over $150. As well, how can you tell it is Nikon from generic.

How much does it cost to re-attach the arm to a pair of glasses? The arm broke off from the hinge of a pair of glasses that I purchased from ClearlyContacts. Took it to this guy who runs an eyeglass repair centre out of his apartment and he's charging me $40+tax. Is this how much it usually costs? That's almost half of what I paid for the glasses themselves...

My wife's pair of sunglasses broke the stem at the hinge and I got quoted around the same area. I ended up epoxying the arm back on since it was metal on plastic interface; still works great. But, if you can't get new frames for your glasses, this option is your best one for recovering your glasses. I don't think that you will find cheaper and you certainly can find more expensive, if you can find anyone at all in the GTA who will repair frames.

When I bought mine, Optical 88 was one of the only cheaper stores carrying them. Spectacle is a great store that also carries the line, but you do pay a premium

Anyone knows an optical place in Vancouver that is knowledgeable in assembling lenses on a rimless silhouette frame? I was planning to get it done at Costco. The Costco staff told me that they have stopped doing it for all silhouette rimless frame for their fragility and customer keep going back for replacement.
Also, I am looking for transition lenses. Anyone knows where to get it for a good price?

Question about PD. I didn't have the correct PD but wanted to take advantage of the Clearly Contacts free shipping this weekend so I measured myself. I ordered 2 pairs and 1 was 2mm over and the other was 3mm over. Is this going to cause a problem. My script
-1.25 -0.5 175
-1.50 -0.5 005
I am searching online and getting different answers. Some say the script is too low and a larger PD is just fine while others say it may effect vision.
Thanks for any input.

Anyone have some tips for buying sunglasses?
From some research, there doesn't seem to be any difference in quality of lens between a $400 brand name pair and some cheap ones from the gap or something?

Can anybody tell me where's the best place in Markham (or Toronto) to get just lenses put into frames I already have?
I walked around pacific mall to get some quotes. Somebody told me $80, another place told me $130. I know for a fact my girlfriend got lenses replaced, supposedly "at cost" to the store, which was $40. She was only able to get that because of an error in her giving them the prescription.
I assume the quality of lenses can't vary too much. The factors are thin, non scratch coating, UV protection, anti glare, astigmatism...anything else? Should I just worry about finding the best price?
