Hi everyone,
I'm looking for a fitness Gym to join within the Markham area. I've already tryed Goodlife and Premier fitness, however, I found their rates to be more expensive than I originally anticipated, especially when they charge a range from $30-50 bi-weekly. Furthermore, i found their prices are more reflected towards the classes they offer, when I really only wanna use the machines. Goodlife (even with my company discount) can be as much as $60 per month. Premier was the cheaper one (at $55 per month), but I found the atmoshere and cleanliness became an issue (Esna park location).
I was wondering if I could get any good advice as to a good Gym that is within Markham, more reasonably priced (desire under $45 per month), clean, tidy, and a wide selection of machines for me to use.
Thanks, really appreciate it!

u would prolly want to use the "search" function on this forum. There have been MANY discussions on Gyms and Gym Memberships.

Community center in the north side of Markville mall should be in that range but you get what you pay for.

wow... 16 biweekly is sweet. Im paying 30 i believe.
Honestly though, dont cheap out on gym membership and have to drive longer to reach the place. Pick the most convienant location for you, or youll eventually wind up in the whole "egh, its too far, ill go some other time" trap

that is gread advice. Lots of gyms hope you sign up for a year and end up not going after a month or two. It's easy especially if u go alone, to say "eh not today, i'm tired". I pay 17 bi weekly and that's with someone else on my plan but when I had 4 ppl it was 16.
I like the idea of Markham YMCA at 40/mth or Goodlife. But it depends on your needs. Goodlife and other gyms, you won't see kids around and depending on the gym the type of crowd differs. At Goodlife u get a lotta yuppies and not too many hardcore plus many classes available. Gets crowded these days too. Seriously just take a tour during Monday nights, which is usually the busiest night for gyms

o.o the goodlife at markville is crowded? Im there pretty much everyday... never had to wait for a cardio machine, and theres never any lineups for other machines, at most, one person currently using it... but maybe its just the times i go

I am paying $11 and my wife is paying $8.30 biweekly. I used to pay $9 and $6.30 for my wife. I paid $500 + $350 (for my wife) init fee though. It was a few years ago. We broke even the init fee long time ago.
Yes, the location is important. It must be easy to access. There is a goodlife close to my work place. Hence, I can go there in lunch. There are 2 goodlife (one for women only) close to where I live.

I think it all depends on when you go there. I usually go to Markville's in Saturday morning. The treadmill can be busy (especially there were a few broke down recently in the past few weeks) but I don't need to wait long. There is always some other kind of cardio machine available. I prefer treadmill and the other cardio machines are just time filler to wait for the treadmill. No, there was no line up.
It is not busy at all in the weekday night time I went there.

It well worths it if you think about long term and more important ... commitment. That forces me to go and forces me not to quit. ;)

=p but you would need about 1 year just to break even with your wife's rate x.x thats some serious longterm planning.

well, ususally mon-fri anytime from 2:30 - 7 and 9 - 12 or 5-8 on weekends... and if you're considering it, keep in mind they have towels for your use, but they hide it away in the front desk

My calculation at that time was to take about 13 to 14 months to break even (my wife and my own) based on the options available at that time. That includes the price schedule of other gyms.
Anything after my break even point is a plus. I have joined for 4 years so far.
I think at that time a no init fee option would costed me at least $25 biweekly. Just assume it is $25.
500 / (25 - 9) = 31.25 biweekly = 62.5 weeks = 1 year and 10 weeks.
If I use your "paying $30 biweekly" and my current rate, $11 for calculation,
(30 - 11) * 52 weeks / 2 * 3 years = $1482.
Just my own plan (not including my wife's) saved $1482.
PS. I did not include my wife's in the calculation. She basically pays 70% of my rate.

I think you need to pay for the towel service. And, your membership indicates you pay that service.

May be you do pay for that service without knowing it. That may explain why you are paying $30 biweekly.
When they scan your membership card, your photo and what you allow to use pop up in their monitor. They don't need to examine your membership card physically.

Hmmm! Do you bring a spare set of clothes? I need a whole set of clothes to change anyway. Bringing a towel does not bother me. At least, mine is bigger than theirs and I don't need to worry about who used that before.
I basically bring a new set of "6 pack" everytime: an underwear, a towel, a small towel for wiping the sweat during exercise, a T shirt, a pair of socks and a pair of short.
