I run media Xp on my home computer .My work computer does not have a media player or dvd drive .Would I be able to use a external drive to bring shows to work with me and play them ?How do I do it ?How do I load a media player on the extra drive .my work computer will not let me download a media player .

I will make a couple of assumptions here:
1) you mean Windows XP MCE 2005
2) the shows you're talking about are recorded TV shows in DVR-MS
In short, if you copy a file from your Recorded TV show to an external HD and try to watch it on a computer without MCE on it, it will not work.
You can, however, convert the DVR-MS files into WMV, DIVX or MPEG using DVR-MS converters...they can be found online as stand-alones or plug-ins for MCE.
Now if you cannot even watch videos at work cause you don't even have Windows Media Player at work and you cannot install one, you won't be able to do it.

He could use Media Player Classic. No installation needed and it will run right off the removable drive.

I used to watch movies using MPC on my iPod. Works over USB just fine.
