BEIJING (Reuters) - A Chinese businessman who bought a Russian fighter jet online wants his money back after finding it could not be shipped to China, state media reported on Tuesday.

Zhang Cheng, a Beijing businessman, bid $24,730 and paid a $2,000 deposit for the former Czech air force plane on Chinese-based eBay, Xinhua news agency said.

But legal experts informed Zhang that the MiG-21, located in Idaho in the United States, was "almost impossible to ship back," Xinhua said, quoting the Beijing Times.

Moreover, the seller had clearly confined the destination of the plane to the United States and Canada, Xinhua quoted a member of eBay's public relations staff as saying.

Chinese Web surfers have accused Zhang of trying to gain fame, but others suggest it merely shows the improved living standards of the Chinese, Xinhua said.

The buyer, however, said he was building a collection.

"I like to collect valuable items," he said. "I have the buying power and my company has an empty space where I can display the plane."

I say if we can't get a refund on leaky subs, this guy should be s.o.l.

$24k for a MiG fighter jet is a steal. However, those jet engines will suck more than $24k of gas in just a few hours of flying. But I guess if he wanted to put it on display then it doesn't matter.

Well they don't actually link to the Ebay auction.. It's likely that jet is in poor condition and would be for static use only.

I'd actually like to see the ebay auction.

Otherwise, $24k for a flying condition Mig-21 is a steal.

He was probably pissed when the thing didn't come with any weapons of mass destruction. Is this the same guy who collected the 40 million Pepsi points and wanted to get that fighter jet in the commercial? HahA! ;)

I would fill up at the local Esso and then use the afterburners to get the hell out of there.

He can sit in the cockpit and yell, "I'm goin' BALLISTIC!!" only so many times before it starts getting boring. No wonder he wants his money back.

I don't think you'd get very far, considering ESSO stations don't have Jet fuel.

I'm pretty sure DND had contracts with Esso just recently (past 5-10yrs).

Just checked and Esso in Halifax has Jet A-1.

Those are the decomissioned Oberon Subs, not the new Victoria class subs. You can tell by the radar dome on the bow.

ESSO has jet fuels in their stations INSIDE airports, but not the one down the street from ya.

Ahhhhhhhh.

ElChico: Where are the Victoria Class kept, Victoria?

HMCS Victoria is on the west coast at Esquimalt. The other three (Windsor, Corner Brook, and Chitcoutimi) are stationed in Halifax. Only the Chitcoutimi in not in current service due to fire damage. The other three are fully active.

I'll have to keep my eye out for them and snap some photos.. they aren't around that often I guess.

Chitcoutimi must be around in drydock (I'd guess?), but I haven't noticed it.. so many ships out here.

Hope we get good weather for you, it's pretty depressing when it just rains for days and days.

You can pretty much walk the city though, nice and easy to get around.. lots of interesting sights.

Corrupt: PMing you a cool picture I took the other day of Halifax.

They look pretty sharp.

But they are long range patrols so the two sea-worthy ones might be at sea.

So they are decomisioned... so you are telling me our fleet is 1 or 2 leaky subs and two of those ships? :P

If he bid in a chinese-based ebay and the goods cannot ship to China, I think the auction is a bit misleading.

The Oberons a no longer used. Our Sub fleet is Four Diesel-Electric Victoria Class (Ex RN Upholder) Subs. One is under repairs for the fire that occured during delivery. There is a general Military Thread under Off-topic somewhere.

Sweet, I'm gonna buy one then. Less than 24k to buy it, maybe a couple million to fix it up so it actually works...

I posted a bunch of "for sale" on Migs a few years ago, they went for between $10k-$30k. You might try google to find some more recent ones. I don't care enough to bother.

$24k for a MiG isn't actually a very good deal. They're always up for sale often at much lower prices. When it comes to an aircraft, you get a wide range as it depends on what you're getting.

A flyable machine will cost a ton more than a static, and statics vary depending on amount of corrosion and such.

I don't doubt that you could get one for less, but we have no idea of the condition or what was included with this transaction as it didn't link to the fleabay auction.
