View Full Version : Cannot load my website with Rogers

Ok I seem to have gotten myself an interesting situation:

I have been putting together a website lately. Domain registered through GoDaddy, but hosted elsewhere. Nameservers have been set at the registrar and everything has been going smooth for the last two weeks, website up and running great. Last time I loaded it must have been 3 am on June 2nd.

Anyways at 10 am in the morning I decided to check my email and try to load the site but it comes up either as page unavailable or the msn autosearch page comes on saying the site couldn't be found.

Got in touch with the host and they told me there had been a downtime with the server for about 10 minutes or so, but everuthing was up and running at the moment. My site was still not loading up, so on a second email the support rep from hosting tests my site himself, on the web, ftp, email it all works, but I don't seem to be able to do any of that.

Then I ran a search on dnsreport.com and everything seems fine, even signed up with 3 or four of those monitoring services they all say the site is accesed fine (Servers in Detroit, San Francisco, London UK, Munich Germany all had no problem pulling up the site), but still no luck for me.

So I put Rogers Extreme on hold and use dial up (this thing I get from school), and try the site, and it works fine along with ftp and email, also went to cjb.net and used their free proxy, also loads the site fine.

So literally if I have my computer connected with Rogers Extreme, I can't access the site, but if I use my dialup or a proxy I can. Knowing that a while back I had a similar problem with a blog site (Rogers had banned or restricted the IP or something), I call them and the tech guy tells me in a few words: "The Rogers DNS server has not been refreshing, or updating as it should the record for the ip of my site, so he will ask his upper level to have the DNS refreshed, he puts me on hold, then comes back telling me that changes should be good after 1 hour and I should be able to load up my site at that point, or call back otherwise".

It didn't work, so I called back (must've been on hold for like 1 hour, I don't know wth was happening at tech support ) and the people I am speaking with are trying to make up excuses, maybe your site is meant only to be loaded on a proxy ...etc etc, we are not sure what the problem is, we'll get someone to test it on bell but we gotta call him at home and so on. I end up having to send an email with all the details and a copy of a tracert from the command prompt.... That's it, site still not loading

Now a while back I called them for port5.com (I had both Rogers and Sympatico 3 month trial at the time), and the site would come up on sympatico but not Rogers, at that point they just put aticket through, and after 24 hr I got a call from the automated service that the problem had been reolved, that was it, I wish they would've done the same thing this time.

What p.... me off is that I have been putting money into adwords to advertise the site, and my target market is the GTA, assuming 1/3 of these people have Rogers, a good deal of them won't even be able to access my site at all..........................

Anyways I was hoping if there was someone with some info, or a similar experience and any sugestions to resolve this quickly, or may be any ideas for how long I should expect this to be happening for (Isn't the rogers dns server bound to eventually get refreshed and updated?)

Oh man, you're patient! I would've told Rogers to go blow me.

I think 2 or 3 years ago, the exact same thing happened to me. I own a dedicated server, which hosts about 20 domains. 5 or 6 are mine, and the rest are for friends and clients.

Anyway, just like you, one day my main domain name ceased to be accessible (gergin.net). Just like that. It was super strange cuz I could access any of the other 19 domains, which pointed to the exact same DNS servers and were hosted on the exact same machine.

I keep daily backups of each of the sites on my comp at home, so I went and reset that domain on my server. I re-created it from scratch. Still no go. I re-entered the DNS information through my registar. No effect. I entered false DNS, and then entered the good ones again next day. No effect.

Finally I called Rogers, and they also told me that their DNS servers hadn't registered any changes, but we'll put that request through for you, bla bla bla. I waited around a day and half, and it's been working since then again.

Weird!

A year ago, I couldn't access FutureShop's web site or Cisco's web site. Rogers had not updated their DNS server.

So I switched DNS servers and now use my own. No problems.

You should note, that Rogers has several DNS servers, some will update and some won't. So some areas will get access to your site.

Thanks for the info. Just got off the phone with rogers and they say they can't/won't do anything about it, since when they run a tracert it stops at alphared.com servers, this is not on their network hence I am SOL.

I have a favour to ask: could anyone with sympatico try to see if they can load www.thevideoconverter.com, and if yes could you run a tracert from command prompt:

Open command prompt
type: tracert www.thevideoconverter.com
wait a bit and take a screen shot of the result

feel free to pm or email me at : mocierion@hotmail.com

When you ping or tracert www.thevideoconverter.com, does it at least resolve the hostname into the IP address?

Is the behavior the same if you're using the Rogers proxy servers compared to when you're not using them?

Thanks everyone, now I have something to bring up with rogers

My tracert is exactly as what subliminal posted in that picture, except the first few servers are Rogers rather than shaw.

I'm with Rogers and I can see your site.

I can't seem to get to it on my computer, neither can any of the rogers tech support people I have talked to, so far. Actually the trace copies people posted helped a whole bunch, I finally managed to convince them that if someone with Rogers in Misisauga can see the site, but I can't, it must be a rogers problem, so he finally agreed to put a ticket through.

BTW, feel free to post a trace route if you don't mind

Thanks to everyone for the help, hopefully Rogers will take it from here (hopefully)
