I downgraded my video card from a 6600gtoc to a 9600xt. It boots up fine and all.. but when it starts loading windowsxp, the progress bar will have messed up graphics running thru it... and windows won't load. So i tried it with safe mode.. which worked better than a normal boot up... but the screens graphics is messed up.. pretty much nothing is accessible.

i did remove the nvidia drivers prior to reinstalling my older card
both dvi and vga are the same
the bios screen is very clean, think the card is about to die?

Ok so i deleted nvidia and nvidia wdm with driver cleaner in safe mode, started xp like normally but after the splash i would lose desktop.

Tried installing the ati drivers in safe mode, pop up called "Severe" says "inf error video driver not found."

In all my years, I have never been able to take a system running an ATI or Nvidia card and then put the opposite card in and continue along my merry way. Constant lockups. Even with a driver cleaner.

If its a permanent hardware move, I'd recommend reinstalling. It'll end up taking less time than messing with the system for days on end and your system will run faster (new installs are great, until you start using them anyway... ah sweet Windows).

Its possible the card might be dying; how does it look at the POST screen. If your vid card is on the fritz, you'll most likely get corruption there as well, whereas if its Windows being pissy; that won't happen until partway through loading.

post is normal. I did go from the 9600xt to 6600gt.. and it ran great.

This is not a permanent move.. its just that i only use that computer as a downloader/storage. so i lent the nvidia to a friend cause its an upgrade for him.

i just submitted a ticket to ati, hopefully i get a reply soon.
that comp is just running in safemode right now.

I'm going to try to completely remove ati and any nvidia drivers... and then reinstall nforce 2 drivers.. hopefully this will work.

No kidding? You meant the nforce2 chipset drivers right?

Sweet, I'll try that the next time it comes up.
