Final update on tires. 2 choices before going to buy in the next 2 days (all-season high performance tires). Both tires should hold this heavy car well since they are rated for higher weight handling.
1). Michelin Pilot Sport A/S.
- OEM tires on this car
- already have them on another car and really like the performance
- Z rated
2). Nokian WR.
- better winter / water performance (apparently the best for A/S tires)
- worse cornering / highway ride
- H rated
- Cheaper (~335+tax each vs. $393-425+tax for Michelin)
Hey all,
I am looking for recommendations on where to buy the following parts (2002 300M Special):
1). Front + rear brake rotors + pads (would prefer OEM, but will look at aftermarket if high quality - i.e. Brembo).
2). A set of 245/45/ZR18 tires. I do not think that I can afford summer and winter sets, so I am looking for something similar to what I already have - Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires - all-season performance.
I definititely want to buy something local (Toronto) unless it can be shipped very quickly (yes, I know, there are many deals in the States).

Not to put you down, but if you can afford 18 in. tires, you should consider have a summer and winter set. Just mount your winter tires on steelies.

Each tire = $400+tax (winter or summer), each steelie = $50 a pop, so I am looking at around $3500 in wheels... not interested at this time.

? What kind of tires are you getting for $400+tax/tire?

245/45/ZR18 = original OEM tires - Michelin Pilot A/S. If I were to get winter tires, they would be Michelin Pilot Alpin (have these exact tires on our 2nd car).

We had a 300M here at the office, and it used really expensive tires.

Base model 300M came with 225/55R17 tires. I'm sure your 300M Special didn't come with larger brakes, compared to the other models, so 17" rims would fit over your brakes. Not to mention you may want to go with thinner tires for better winter traction, further reducing the cost of the tires.
You don't always have to go with expensive Michelin tires, to get similar performance. Other companies such as Toyo and Kumho make cheaper tires.
I mean, do you really need Z-Rated tires? Do you do really push your car to it's limits?

As has been said.
You should be able to use 17" rims in which case you can go down to 225 or 215 (thinner the better), 55, R17 (V or even H rated). Those tires are less than half the price of yours.
Remember, they're winter tires, not ultra wide racing summer tires.

I have had enough fun driving on el-cheapo tires (sold the car after a few thousand driving on those).
300M SPECIAL edition uses larger brakes, but yes, 17" will fit. And for that size, all you are going to get is Y or W rated tires (which are essentially Z+) (good brands, again).

216 a tire + 25 off coupon.... and those are all seasons....one of the best price/performance tires out there. just read the reviews if u dont believe me.
or toyo proxes 4's

$250
...u dont need michelin a/s...they are just an expensive ripoff and aren't really worth 400 a tire...
if u want summer/winter set...its about the same as the a/s's anyways.
and u can run 17 on steelies in the winter anyways

Thank you for the rotor links! I'll probably buy those. Already got a set of ceramic pads... woohoo!
Regarding tires. I spent several hours yesterday researching these exact General Exclaim UHP tires. Yes, 90% of the reviews say that they are good, but you have to look at the negative reviews too.
Many many reviews (including the ones that gave the tires a good mark) mentioned that they feel that these tires "float" on the road - you feel like you are in a boat - you can't take a corner at fast speed or go fast(er) in wet conditions - all compared to Michelins and Yokohamas.
Many people do mention that these are NOT sports tires, they are made for every-day driving, but you can't push them even a little bit. With my engine (255hp/258lb-ft) I think I'd want to do more than just driving to work and back 5 days a week.
I have a heavy car, and negative reviews did come from people who have heavier cars. It just shows that the tires are not that good for big cars, AND have very thin sidewall.
I wouldn't feel comfortable driving on these tires.
Regarding Pilot A/S, we already have 245/50/R17 on Intrepid R/T, and the performance is AMAZING. They are paired up with 16" Pilot Alpine's, but A/S doesn't look that bad on snow.
I drove on a lot of tires including Michelin, Yokies, Toyos, Bridgestone... and Motomaster (complete crap!). So far, I understand why Michelin is more expensive, but don't understand, why that much more.
I am pretty much set with going either with Pilot A/S or similar Yokohamas, so I am looking for a place that will sell them to me at the best price.

If you want to push your car, then the Nokians are not for you. The Nokians are basically winter tires, that are made from a tough enough compound to handle the summer heat. But the tread is still designed for winter. What you get are passable summer tires and excellent winters tires all in one. They are more for people who are too lazy to maintain two sets of tires but want to be safe in the winter (and in that respect, they work very well).

Are you just saying that you blitz the occasional feeder/on/off ramp and want that to continue to be a satisfying experience with your new tires... or are you saying you want a competitive tire choice in case you participate in motorsports?

I don't mind both. LOL. In any case, just put on new Michelins... Will see how they behave on this car... 245/50/R17 on Intrepid R/T... 245/45/R18 on 300M Special. Yaaaa.
