You must bring the car to a mechanic shop and have them do a full check of the vehicle. If you fail to do this, you can end up with major problems which will end up costing a lot more then $1000. For instance, a rad can cost $300 plus installation. Dont get me started on the waterpump/timing belt cost + labour or driveshafts/gastank.

I bought this for $1000 last year (June 2005), so far so good.. I bought it with 302,000km's on the engine. Now it has 320,000km's and still running strong. Only thing I did to it when I bought it was get certified, and emissions and it passed without spending anything.
As for repairs I've only spend $300 on it. $200 on the starter (I was learning how to drive standard and I killed the starter) and $100 on a strut and a hood bought from the junk yard. My dad and I are fixing the car up so we don't take it to the mechanic.
Edit: I got lucky with this one, and because my dad knew about cars we can maintain it pretty well. I don't know if you're going to be as lucky.

Hi! I think you should really have someone or a mechanic take a look at it first, just so you'll know what you are getting.
