long story short, got a nail in one of tire, took a mechanic, he basically took the nail out and put some plastic material to seal the tiny hole, and i got charged with $15.. i just wanna make sure i didn't get overcharged by him,
so is $15 a reasonable price to fix it? thanks.

It is more important to make sure that the tire is patched properly than to make sure that you are not overcharged.

The shop should take the tire off the rim and patch it from inside. Also the position of the nail should not be close to the sidwall.

Plugging it from outside is not the best practice. There is a risk the plug will be blown out.

Yup, the tire has to be taken off the rim, sealed up and re-balanced. I paid 25 bucks for this before.

thanks for the quick reply.
he did it from the outside , basically he used a plastic stick, bent it and stuffed into the hole with some special glue(i think), do you think it's a good idea?

They should use this to patch from inside:

I remember paying about $25 at CT, and I believe the patching was done from inside the tire.

I don't care what it is, if you get charged $15 for work done to your car, the only thing you should be complaining about is the likely crappy job that was done.

You get what you pay for and $15 is dirt cheap when it comes to car repairs/maintenance.

This shop is using something like this http://www.imperialinc.com/img/73579.jpg to plug the hole from outside. If you go to CT and take a look at the package it said for temporary repair only.

AFAIK all if not most bigger shops do not use plugs from outside anymore due to liability issues.

My garage used something like that when I popped a hole. Cost me about $10. It's been a year since than and no problems.

Patching vs. plugging.

IMO patching is worth the extra $10 or so for the piece of mind... especially if one doesn't carry a spare or finds changing tires on the side of the road odious and/or a chore.

If you do any performance driving at all then patching is the only acceptable method.

If it makes you feel any better, you might be able to get half an hour's worth of work out of them for a $25 patch job as opposed to 5 minutes for a $15 plug job. RFC'ers are value minded yes? ;)

You guys are lucky. I paid $40 at Green and Ross to get my tired patched. The took it off the rim patched it and then balanced my tire again.

Definitely better to spend the extra money and don't use the plug.

No issues, no leaks, no vibrations, no problems at all.

It really depends on how many years are left on the tires. I had mine repaired with the plug method two summers ago. Still no issues. Note that I only use this tire in the summer. So maybe this helped. Anyway, my summer tires don't usually last more than 4 seasons. So if it lasts until then, I'm happy.
