I just got back from walking my dog, sometime during the walk his nailed was torn off.
WARNING: Kind of gory
(http://img162.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tornoff9mr.jpg)

As you can see the nail is completely seperated from the thumb, only hanging by the root.
He is in obvious discomfort. The bleeding has stop somewhat.
I've managed to discourage him from licking the wound but I know he'll lick it once i'm asleep, possibly infecting it.

It's 11:30PM, I'd rather take him to the vet now than wait till tomorrow. Are there any 24/7 vet clinic around Jane and Weston?
How much am I looking at to cut the nail and dress the wound?

**dam it, as I was typing this, he touched his wound and now it's bleeding again, in big blobs of blood.

**UPDATE: his paw is covered in blood, HELLLPPP

Oh man, you might want to give people some warning about that pic.

Anyways, I don't know if this will help, but it's a listing of Vets in Toronto.

None around there.

But closest Vet. Emergency Clinic (VEC) is on Sheppard/Willowdale.
That looks friggin painful!!!!!!! That happened once to my friends rabbit, the "quik" (spelling might be off) got snipped and it looked brutal.

Anyways, go to the VEC! On sheppard, between Yonge/Bayview. You'll see it. Big blue sign I think beside Lansing.

The other VEC is downtown. Around Bloor/Yonge ?? (not sure).

I only know of those 2 emergency clinics open now.

Maybe in the future, you might want to buy some of this "quik powder". I know they have it for rabbits, not sure if its the same for dogs. Anyways, its some powder you put on it when they break their nail. I'm not sure if it's just a "deterrent" so they stop licking it, or if it actually has some medicine.

Thanks for the suggestion aquariaguy, both locations are quite a distance from my house.

I'm gonna head down to the 920 Yonge clinic, I'm just praying it's under $200

Good idea, I don't think he can wait till tomorrow. I already tried wrapping it but it causes too much discomfort.

Quick powder is basically the same stuff (septic stick) they sell in the drugstore to stop shaving cuts. I know it looks gross but it's no big deal. It looks like the nail was split through the quick or vein (common when nails are left too long or cut too short). It will clot if you do as nano suggested. You can also try dabbing some black pepper on it to help it clot.

So should I pick up Quick Powder at my local drug store and wait till tomorrow or take him now?
I just want to stop the bleeding and possibly wrap the wound so he can't lick it.

If he was my dog, I would dab some black pepper on it, loosely wrap some guaze on it and put a sock over it. It should stop bleeding with the pepper alone. If he really doesn't like the guaze or sock then leave it off once it's clotted. Then call you regular vet tomorrow and see if they want to see him.

Awww poor doggie.

Spray some invisiable bandiad? I wonder if that is safe for animals?
Or wrap his paw up.

Hmmm... Your best bet is to keep searching for a vet clinic.

Take him now , don't prolong the agony the dog is in any longer.

Heres an emergency vet hospital, opened 24-7 located in Oakville/Mississauga border. Call them and ask for a number for another 24-7 clinic close to you.

You're right, it's going to be a challenge to find a drug store at this hour, might as well take him to the vet. Will be back with update.

The binding it and putting a sock over it is the best idea. It happened once where my dogs nail got ripped off. All they did at the emergency clinic was bind it, and the next day we brought him in and they pulled the nail off.

It bleeds alot but the animals really don't feel much pain from it. I remember when it happened to my Pooch i picked him up and my hand was coated in blood, I never ran back to my house so fast in my life. :P

I would suggest this one as well. I've been there a few times with and they are very good.
