I've never been on the island. I am planning to go there today. How can I get there? Is there any cost?
Is there like a ferry that goes back and forth or something?

Go to Union Station, and take the streetcar to the ferry docks [Queen's Quay]
Get off and walk literally diagonally across the street, and you'll get to the docks.
Fare is usually reasonable - $4? Or something. It's not expensive, for a round trip.
Edit: P.S. Not sure if it's open today. Maybe it counts as 'tourist'.

I believe it's $6.
And yes it is open today. I was out for my run at 10 and saw there were TONS of people already with their bikes, beer coolers, BBQ grills etc....
It's going to be packed today.
BTW, i noticed there were a lot of nice look chicks going to the Island ;)

Kind of late, but for future reference, you can take the streetcar from Union Station -- I believe it's one stop.

There is no place on Montreal Island that is as pretty as Toronto Island. You'd have to go all the way to Oka to find a beach, and it is hard to find a place to bicycle without being run over by chip-carrying francophone drivers.

In addition to ferries, there are water taxis (but they charge $10 a trip whereas ferry is $6 for city --> island only and free on the way back).
If you have canoe or kayak, you can paddle there. We regularly paddle around the islands.

Does anyone know if there is free/discounted parking during weekend/holidays near the ferry docks at the foot of Bay street? I want to drive there by car and get to city islands by ferry.

Absolutely none, there is nothing free downtown, cheaper to park in north york and take a subway.

shouldn't parking rates be discounted on weekends/holidays when there isn't as much demand as during workday? What about this huge parking lot to the east of ferry docks?

AFAIK, that parking lot is now a condo construction site.
Why should there be cheap parking?
Harbourfront/Ferry Docks/Island are always super busy in the summer, esp on holidays.

You seriously don't know Montréal that much.
Westmount, Parc Jean-Drapeau, and ¨Mont-Royal¨ is as pretty as Toronto Island. There is a beach at the Parc Jean-drapeau(10min from Downtown MTL).

No, cyclist don't get run over by car.
And, we got the Bixi.

The Boucherville island are a protected park 30min from Downtown MTL.

Take your own advice please. No one cares about Montreal.
Also, I'm surprised no one told the OP to swim there or take a Porter charted flight.

I have parked very close to the ferry on multiple weekends for very cheap. Like 5 bucks for the day or something.

I honestly wonder why you started a thread when you easily could have found exactly what you needed with a quick google search. Wow, the ferry schedule is the SECOND result when you search "Toronto Island". You are not even asking for an opinion on anything, where to go, what to do, what its like. Just simple information that takes the average person a second to find. Are you sure you can handle buying a ticket alone?

I'll buy him the ticket and deliver it to his house for him. I'll also pack some sunscreen and a sandwich so he won't suffer from exposure and hunger. Poor pumpkin!

...um, if you hadn't noticed, this thread is a hair over four years old. man_alone revived the thread (http://forums.redflagdeals.com/toronto-island-how-do-i-get-there-307911/#post11251862) because he had a question about parking in relation to the Toronto Island (ferries) and (likely) thought it was better to revive an old thread rather than start a new thread.
I honestly wonder why you criticize a user when you easily could have taken a couple of seconds to note the thread's time stamp.

D'oh! I didn't notice that either! I hate that. It's one thing to revive a four year old thread if it is relevant and on topic, but man_alone was asking about cheap parking. He should have started a new thread in this case.
That being said, if the original post was recent, the criticisms would have been warranted. It is a dumb post.
I rarely look at the time stamps on posts, unless I see a bunch of names that I've never heard of that are perma-banned. This is a good indication that someone has revived an ancient post.

It happens to me, too. But I try to at least hold back on the nasties if I can.

Again, true. If, of course, it was a recent one. ;)
Maybe OP should just consider taking the TTC down. Or park somewhere with a (relatively) cheap all-day rate and bus the rest of the way there.
