I'm currently using Sympatico DSL, and have Outlook configured to retrieve email from my domain name email addresses, and send mail via the sympatico smtp server. Up until last week everything was fine, and all of a sudden I wasn't able to send mail anymore and I got an error message saying that Outlook was unable to establish a secure connection with the smtp server. I called Sympatico last night, and spent over an hour on the phone with a rep. The rep had no idea what he was doing, in fact after I told him I was using Outlook to retrieve email from a non-sympatico address, he panicked and tried to transfer my call to "second tier" support. I guess they told him he should know what to do or something because 5 minutes later he was back on the phone. Anyways, my hour on the phone involved about 45 minutes of waiting on hold time as he kept coming back with new things to try and putting me on hold again when they didn't work. At one point he had me change the settings for my INCOMING mail server port. After that I wasn't able to receive mail either.

We had a power outage and my call got cut off after an hour and 5 minutes. A few minutes later another rep from Sympatico called to follow up, and he told me that Sympatico no longer supports using their smtp server to send mail from a non-sympatico address. I told him this had been working up until last week, and he said they had been doing some 'work' on the servers and it's possible that it no longer works. He said if I wanted to use their servers to work with my domain account, I would have to use their 'public' smtp server. I tried it and it didn't work, and he again stated that they don't t support it. I then asked him that if a business is using sympatico DSL service and they need to send emails to their clients, then tehy would have to use their sympatico email address? To which he replied yes.

Anyways I just wanted to share my story and ask if anyone has had a problem like this recently with Sympatico or any other provider, and if so, were you able to resolve it?

Just authenicate your outgoing mail with your Sympatico login in name.

In Outlook, under Accounts, check the box that says, My Server Requires Authenication.

Then enter in your Sympatico email address and password.

Should do the trick

How does that solve his problem?

With Gmail, you can add as many secondary email addresses and send using Gmail. For example, if you had a @shaw.ca address, you can set it so Gmail will send email as abc@shaw.ca. All you have to do is send a verification email to your abc@shaw.ca address and then Gmail will let you send out emails as abc@shaw.ca. Just set forwarding for your domain name email to forward to your Gmail account. The rest will be history. PM for an invite if you don't have one already. HTH.

Gmail also use SSL (port 465), so it doesn't get blocked

I use Shaw and my host is Dreamhost. I started having problems so switched the Port to 587 (http://wiki.dreamhost.com/index.php/Outlook_Express). The link has pictures about configuring Outlook Express and at the bottom of the page it states about switching to 587. Hope that helps.

For you this is a feature. For me, it was (or still is) a major flaw in Sympatico system to allow that. That should be stopped years ago.

Sympatico allows people sending pretending email this way. For example, I could set up the email address bill_gate@microsoft.com to send email out through Sympatico.

I believe you need to set up your email address using Sympatico domain to use their smtp server.

Then enter in your Sympatico email address and password.

Should do the trick

That's what I have been doing and it was working fine up until last week. Now it says it cant establish a secure connection to teh server. This goes away if I enter the sympatico credentials for the pop server and check the box that says "use same settings as incoming mail" for smtp.

I am extremely frustrated right now. For the person who mentioned gmail, I find that to be very inconvenient as well since I am used to having my email client open in the systen tray. Unless gmail can support sending and receiving through a mail client and they have their own smtp servers set up?

Wow, that did the trick. Awesome! So for anyone who posts replies in people's threads saying "why dont you call tech support instead of posting here"..may I direct you to this thread

:D

Thanks again

Yep, Gmail fully supports POP integration (smtp servers like you mentioned) with Outlook, etc...they give you instructions on their website. Glad you fixed the problem!

this will be stupid but....

you have your outgoing set as

smtphm.symaptico.ca
port 25
Useing SSL

and that you need to use authentication....so you'll need sympatico address to log into the sympatico server

oh...and i hate sympatico, switch to Cogeco.....or anything else
