Repairing a Canon digital camera: is this covered by warranty?

I have a Canon digital camera, and hit the front part of the lens (there are 2 sections of the zoom lens) on the ground, and now that part is bent slightly to one side, so the lens will not retract...

I turn it on, it says lens error, please restart the camera, but the lens cannot retract...

Other than the bent lens, it seems to be fine....

I tried pushing it back in but I can't...

How/where can I get this fixed, and would this be covered by warranty?

Warranty does not cover damages caused by the user. Call Canon support and find your nearest authorized canon repair center. If you're in Toronto, there's one in Scarborough at Victoria Park and Finch.

I don't think this kind of damage is covered by warranty. In any case, just go to www.canon.ca and find the nearest Canon repair centre. I know there is one in Mississauga for sure.

canon service centre doesn't seem worth it, as this camera is only $250.... will futureshop or some camerashops help me out? just the lens needs to be pulled out so it can retract, I think the rest of it is fine?

I doubt you'll get it fixed under warranty, as stated above warranty covers manufacturing/product defects and not damaged as caused by the user.

I wouldn't be suprised if it cost more to have it fixed than it would be to buy a new camera.

If the lens housing is bent, there is a very good chance that the lens is damaged - displaced for sure, if not cracked. It's not just "pulling the lens out". Lens retracting mechanism is also very fragile - there is a good chance that some plastic gears got damaged too.

Trash it. Would cost you more to fix than its worth, unless you're lucky and they loose it and send you a cheque. ;)

A buddy dropped a Canon G2 and had the lense go exactly as yours... slight worse in my opinion.. his lense housing was cracked. He go the same error... He did take the lense section apart and managed to get the camera functional, but now he has to manually pull/push the lense in/out, a bit of a pain.. I suspect the gear... slider motor assembly has been damaged.

Without making any judgment on your skills, my suggestion would be to search ebay for your camera... many dead versions (with other problems) go for $5-10.. then canablize one for the other.

Pity they don't make cams to survive a 3-4 foot drop: Use a lanyard next time.
