Can you suggest a good movie to Rent? (Horror, Action, Suspense/ Mystery or Comedy)

Hey guys,

I feel like renting a few good movies tonight; can any of you suggest some good movies to rent? I've seen 95% of all the movies that have been release in the past 4-5 years, so maybe if you can think of some older titles (none of the 1970s stuff, unless it's the best movie ever) or some of the overlook titles or movies that didn't have big theatrical release.

If it is a comedy movie, I want to laugh so hard it hurts :lol: :lol: :lol: (Old School, American Pies, Road Trip, Dodgeball etc.)

If it's an action movie, the story doesn't have to be too great, but as long as it's jam packed with action and is loads of fun (Face/off, Bad Boys II, Die Hard).

For Suspense/Mystery movies, I like movies like Se7en, Usual Suspects, Memento, Sixth Sense, LA Confidential, Saw and Saw II (Horror/Mystery).

Lastly, for Horror movies, anything will do as long as it's not the same old standard garbage we see nowadays. I have seen the classics like the exorcist, the shining, Halloween, Friday the 13th, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Jaws.

If you guys can come up with any suggestions, that would be greatly appreciated.

Suspense:
Dr. Strangelove (directed by Stanley Kubrick --> strange but scary in its own freakish way)

Comedy:
Coming to America (with Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall) --> this is a classic comedy --> you have to see this one!

Formula 51 (Action/Comedy)

I caught a part of it on CBC and it looked good, so I turned it off, wanting to see it from the beginning. Rogers Video had the DVD on sale for $6 recently. Stars Samuel Jackson (in his typical badazz self) and Robert Carlyle (Begbie from Trainspotting, another badazz dude). Most of it is good, and then it sort of slows down near the ending. Not a movie that makes you recommend it to everyone, but it's good for some laughs.

Red Rock West - Nic Cage and Dennis Hopper - Thriller early 90's. Nic everyday guy, looking for a job gets mistaken for a hitman hired to kill someone's wife. Things go awry when the real hitman shows up.

A Simple Plan - Bill Paxton - Crime/Drama. Excellent movie about three men who find millions of dollars in a downed plane with a dead pilot that no one is looking for. It all goes downhill when greed takesover.

Frailty - Bill Paxton and Matthew Mcconaughey - Horror/Thriller. FBI is looking for a serial killer named God's Hands. Nice twist ending.

Alive - Ethan Hawke - Drama/Action. A plane crashes into the Andes mountains with a team of S. American athletes and their loved ones. True story.

Can't Buy Me Love - Patrick Dempsey - Comedy. Boy pays popular girl to hang out with him, so he can be with the in crowd.

Very Bad Things - Jon Favreau - Black Comedy. Man is days away in getting married when his stag party goes horribly wrong.

Legend - Tom Cruise - Fantasy. Unicorns, Demons, and fairies oh my!

Holes - Shia LaBeouf - Adventure/Family. A wrongfully convicted boy is sent to a brutal desert detention camp where he joins the job of digging holes for some mysterious reason.

Election - Matthew Broderick - Comedy. A high school teacher tries to prevent the popular/smart girl from becoming the school president.

Phantom of the Paradise - Paul Williams - Musical/Horror. 70's cult film with a touch of Faust and Phantom of the Opera thrown in.

Manhunter - William L. Petersen - Drama/Thriller. First apperance of Hannibal Lecter. Later remade as Red Dragon with Lecter's part expanded.

Foreign Films you might want to check out. In the mood for love, Das experiment, Quill, Tampopo, The mighty Peking Man, Shiri, Insomnia, and the Vanishing.

My suggestions:

Comedy: Blazing Saddles, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Caddyshack, Strange Brew, This is Spinal Tap, Slap Shot

Action: Ronin, The Warriors, Leon, Raiders of the Lost Ark (probably have seen this), Mad Max/Road Warrior

Suspense/Mystery: Nothing along the lines of your examples but you might want to try The Machinist which is like a Fight Club-type style. Sleepy Hollow is good. Horror/Suspense Classics would be something like Alien/Aliens, The Thing, etc.

Horror: Evil Dead II if you like comedy with your horror. If you want a cult film from the 80's, try Near Dark.

Why would anybody rent an OLD movie?? I thought only new releases were worth any rental price, no?

Because OLD is GOLD :lol: and because I've seen almost all of the newer movies that have come out; plus, it's only $9 for 3 7-day rentals at Rogers.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know that rental fees have gone down this far ($9 for 3): haven't rent 1 for years. And don't get me wrong, I LOVE "old" movies; I actually don't chase after new releases.

Comedy: I'm gonna ignore your "no 70s stuff" and jump to 1959...
"Some Like it Hot"..if you haven't seen it and can get ahold of it, it's hilarious. AFI voted it the best comedy ever a few years ago.

I did :o , except I had already gone to the Rogers and rented a movie yesterday. I saw Poolhall Junkies; It was pretty good too :cheesygri What? Did I Stutter? :lol: :lol:

Thanks guys. My brother just brought home Dog Day Afternoon, Traffic & Ronin (Boondock Saints wasn't available :( ). I think we'll watch Dog Day Afternoon today. Have you guys seen it? If so, what do you think of it? Also, how is the language in the movie? Can someone younger watch it (13 year old) or is it too brutal?

Dog Day Afternoon is a very good movie: I started to like Al Pacino from then on; however, I'm not sure if a 13-yr-old could even half-appreciate it.
