What is the proper etiquette to ask for a room upgrade? Are we supposed to discretely "flash" a 20 or are we supposed to ask for an upgrade and then "tip" them 20?

I am staying at the MGM Grand in the crappy West Wing. Does the trick work for regular/basic rooms to be upgraded to actual suites?

You can find many stories of people and the $20 trick.

If you are allowed to check in to your hotel at the airport, there are fewer "eyes" on the desk staff so it doesn't matter which way you do it as such.

If you are checking in at the hotel because you can't at the airport then fold the $20 and put it under your credit card as you ask if there is a "complimentary suite upgrade" available. Chances are that you will get a better room than you booked depending on the individual.

If they say it's extra or give you attitude after the fact, then you can either ask them to break that same $20 you gave them into change or have them add it to your hotel tab.

Politely state for a the type of room and/or view you want, no $20 needed.

After they tell me what kind of room I'm getting, two queens, one queen, parking lot view, I put my purse on the counter and I pull out a twenty, while I'm pulling it out folded, I ask, "is it possible to get a free upgrade?" quietly so the customer next to me can't hear. If they give the upgrade then I just pass it to them. For some reason I feel dumb doing the handshake so I just hand it to them. Usually in Vegas there's a lineup so you can't really pick who you go to, but if you can pick, pick the person that looks kind of grumpy and has been there for a while.. A newer person might be more reluctant. Sometimes you can even ask the valet parker if they are able to hook you up..
Just want to add, it doesn't always work for me, and when I have gotten a no, I felt kind of rejected afterwards.

I've never had any problems getting complimentary room upgrades without handing over extra money. I find that being polite and courteous goes a long way, especially if the individual is tired or has just served a demanding client (as happened during my last stay in Vegas).

Yes the trick worked for me many of times....The MGM check-in at McCarron always works...try to make sure there's no supervisor or manager standing close by at the time you ask for an upgrade...keep the $20 dollar bill in your hand for the check-in clerk to see....You won't have too say much...they see this everyday....

I did the $20 trick at the aladdin hotel....I sandwiched a $20 between my visa and passport. as i gave it to him i asked if there were any "free" upgrades available. before he said anything, the 20 disappeared! anyway, after a few minutes of him checking the computer and some small talk, we got bumped up two grades...from the basic deluxe rooms to the resort vista.

i check the room value afterwards, i paid about $250 for 5 nights, the room value was $650....not bad at all

You won't be upgraded from a "Basic Room" to a "Suite" for $20.
....but you will be upgraded from a "Basic Room" to a Deluxe,Premium or Strip View Room..for $20..A siute basically sells $200-$300 more per night...try $100 trick if you wan't a suite..
