Hmm.. really? But I'll need those courses and I'm not suppose to have any electives. So wouldn't I be wasting my time choosing electives? Also, if I don't get the courses, does that mean I'm finished? As in another year of university (5)

Yeah, is it not harder than management Calculus, (Optimization)?
Management calculus was an easy breeze for a 4.0. Life Sci/Com Sci calculus covers mgt calculus within the first 2 weeks.
5th Year Management Co-op....last semester for me. Call me lazy, but I took my sweet time....
I like UTSC, it's one of those small cozy type of university, you won't get the typical type of university experience like else where since everyone just goes to class and go home.
Parking seems expensive but it's a hell lot cheaper than York. Those in management, enjoy your 2nd year tuition bill. Coop Management's bill runs close to $10,000. (no jokes)
If you need some 3rd and 4th year book, you can PM me, there are some I could sell, most of them I just keep. (I mean $10k in tuition, what is that extra few hundred dollars going to accomplish)

Unfortunately it lacks such a glorious past (although we did host the most notorius Canadian serial rapist). In fact "Scarborough College" as it was known was designed in the 60's by a famous Canadian architect John Andrews who seemed in love with concrete. He also designed the CN tower. Some examples of his "interesting" style:
http://www.architectureaustralia.com/aa/aaissue.php?issueid=200005&article=11&typeon=2
On the other hand the >2 feet thick steel-renforced concrete walls probably make it the most nuclear resistant campus in the world :P I can't imagine anything getting to you in the "dungeons" (basement level) even if the world did end!

Depends which stream....
Accounting -> Asian
Finance -> Asian
Marketing -> Half Asian (maybe less)
Strategic Mgmt -> Some Asian
HR -> Don't know
Int'l Business -> Half?
Public Management -> Few
Economic Data Analysis -> I didn't even know it existed
But yeah, and I bet close to 75% percent of the MGT people all belong to accounting, finance or marketing, so yeah, pretty dominated by asian in general.

You're a tool if you feel that way; the H/S wings may be concrete, but I think that the addition of all the recent buildings more than compensate for it.
And using the old high school line is kind of losing its' relevance, if you took a look at the tracking of the populations over the years its' increasing at quite a rate, the place is bigger than it used to be back when that was a valid putdown.

Very hard!!!! :twisted: j/k
Most coop placement will ask for your transcript. Big 4 accounting firm are generally very anal about GPA. They only interview people with high GPA. Other jobs, not so important, but nice to have.
First year is just like high school, good chance to boost your GPA. 2nd year is alright, a bit tougher, a bit more work, should be alright for your GPA. 3rd yr, your GPA isn't going to change much, as long as you don't fail, you won't fall below the min req for coop. 4th year, again, your GPA won't change.
1st Course:
Intro to Mgt: Bird Course
Intro to Econ: As long as you can do math and understand the prof, pretty easy
Intro to CS: ******** course, you learn about the HISTORY of computers, some have trouble programming with VB.
Intro to Calculus (Optimization): 70% review, the only new thing you learn is multi variable optimization.
Electives: Depends what you take
Not sure how it is now, but when I took it, 1st year was pretty much a breeze. (It's been 4 years since my 1st yr)

are you kidding. utsg is by far the best of ALL Canadian universities. the a and a building is ass as well. its just class rooms. so what, no service. the only thing its an improvement on is its lecture hall that replaced the drafty pavilion; although it offers some substandard (in comparison to any other university) art facilities, which substandard is considered good compared to other utsc facilities.
the management building is the only good thing at utsc and its only good for management students. management is THE ONLY good thing at utsc other than living in foley hall (and i mean that solely on comfort as again, res life is ass as there is nothing going on, no parties, no fun, just the stupid res council doing stupid events by themselves that no one shows up to because SRC is an exclusive clique full of immature people). anyways, the management building is just class rooms anyways so there isnt really much of any other service provided there either.
as for the new science building thats still a few years off and is 10 years over due. at utsc the labs are a joke. I went to a poor highschool in a small city and our labs were better equipped. Is "ASS" the only adjective you know?
If you're taking Life Sci at UT hoping to get into med school, pharmancy, etc, you already made your first mistake. Doing your undergrad at UT does not help you get in UT Grad School easier, all they look at are your marks! And UT is notorious with the bell curve to screw over most people.
And school is school, what kind of service are you asking for? A big screen TV in every building so you can hang out at school with your friends? A giant swimming pool with jacuzzi so you can chillax? Parties in res? We're in TORONTO, there are tons of clubs and bars around for you to do whatever you want!
All the crap you listed is more about university life more than the actual university itself. If you hate the school so much, transfer out, I don't think anyone is stopping you.

It didn't seem like this is what he was upset about.
He wasn't looking for "luxurious" facilities, just acceptable ones.
I mean, he's right about our lousy computing facilities, they are nothing compared to what's offered downtown or at UTM.
I mean you're right, school is school, and I don't think the guy you're putting down wanted big screen TVs, jacuzzi's, etc. (but we do have a Sauna!)
I don't think he was being unreasonable at all.
And there generally is not much going on at rez... you're pretty much relegated to the Fossil if you're looking for any kind of a good time.

The UTSC sucks if you came to it before all of the capital investment was built and finished. Most people will only remember the concrete walls if they graduated already. Furthermore, it depends so much on what program you're in. If you are doing life science, you spend basically most of your time in the S-wing, and that place really looks like ****. If you're in management, you're in the new mgmt building, which isn't bad at all.

Oh yeah, and your "grad paper" is better known as your diploma.

I did, I was in pre-program the first year and applied into mgt coop for 2nd year.
You need to take 1st yr Mgt, 1st yr Econ, calculus (Into to Optimization), Intro to Computers, and some electives. I took 4 FCE in first year, so it gave me more time to study for each course to boost my GPA.
Over the year, the competition has gotten much more intense. Expect a GPA of 3.4 or above to get in. I snuck in with a 3.3 or so in the first year (4 yrs ago). So just work hard i first year to boost your marks.

We don't have a pool, nor the space for one nor do we have enuff students that would stay on campus to fully use it because parking is so expensive. For all that don't know, the prison drama "Oz" actually used the meeting place and the various concrete stairways as its setting. Yes it was originally built as a prison, so it's not that much of a stretch to say we go to a prison school. Half the people in the labs are passive people anywaz, so if you want to get down and dirty, just volunteer. You'll get to do everything. Our wireless network may not be as good as St. George campus, but we have a lot more computers at our disposal.

Accounting is reserved for people in the Management and Mgt Coop students only. So as a Pre-mgt program or other program student, you will not be able to take it until it opens up to everyone. Even if there are spaces then, you need MGTA02 or A03/A04 to take MGTB05 as a non-mgt program student, so in another word, you won't be able to take it until 2nd year when you completed A03/A04.
Even if you can take it, those who haven't done accounting before in high school will suffer in B05 and B06 since they teach everything quite fast.
Intro to Computers is a program requirement, you don't have to take it 1st year, but it was easy enough for me to take it 1st year. You can take other elective if you think you can do better in those to boost your first year marks. When I took it, it was about history of computer, basic theory on how computer works, and some programming (Visual Basics). So if you have any knowledge about computers and programming, all you need is to memorize the crappy history of computers for an easy 4.0.

UTSC is alright, nice tennis courts, but it's a far walk to get to them. Some of the profs are great, while some are lacking.
One thing that probably can be said about any uni, the food here stinks. I've never been satisfied with the food here...do they supply schools with the least fresh ingredients/food? plus its relatively expensive. just to let the newbs know, there is a Mr.Greek, Harveys, and Wendys off campus, but its quite far, but if you are like me and need a satisfying meal...you know where to go.

How is the program compared to other Life Science majors like Neuroscience, Intergrative Bio and such?
I recently dropped out of Human Bio. 2 Physics and 2 first year Calc? Hell no .
This shoudl answer your question
NROC64H: Neuroscience III: Sensory and Motor Systems
Instructor: Christina de Rivera Session: Winter Lecture: 01
Course Enrollment: 137 Percent Response: 67.88
Woudl you retake this course
Yes - 18.6%
No - 81.4%
Comments: Majority of the students of this course do not recommend Rivera to teach NROC64H3 again due to her lack of teaching/explaining skills of the challenging course material. The lectures were confusing and not very detailed; with the lecturer talking at such a fast pace, students had to spend most of their class time jotting down everything and, not much lecture information was posted on the slides. Rivera was also not equipped with the adequate amount of knowledge to teach this course and many students found that her lectures notes (that she reads off the slides) and the textbook did not coincide a number of times. Almost the whole class was frustrated with the format of the exams, which did not reflect and test the understanding of the course concepts; it rather focused on the minute details of a few, barely mentioned details of the lectures. Some of the test material was not covered in class and students found the exam material distribution as unfair (ex. 40% of the exam focused on one chart in the textbook). There was also not sufficient time to finish the exam. Overall, students found this course a very poor learning and difficult experience.
I might has welll put the whole thing in bold.

Lauwrence is a pretty boring prof; lame joke, monotone voice, and his test aren't exactly what I call easy.
Boivaird on the other hand, he just randomly talks about his past "accomplishment" throughout the term, he'll throw in some real teaching here and there, but not much. His exams are pretty easy.
Into to Management is a really easy course, as long as you have done some business in high school, you'll get by easily.

Well, people used to do that because the marks needed to get in to UTSG is higher than other campuses for same program, but now I think it's generally the same. With the exception of Management Co-op (which requires a slightly higher mark than Commerce at UTSG).

I've had nothing but good times at UTSC, but a lot of it depends on the person. If you like to keep to yourself, then you're probably better off at St. George campus where you can be more like a number.
If you are new to the school and play ice hockey, UTSC has one of the better Interfaculty ice hockey programs. There are men's teams for each skill level and a women's team.
You get socks, loaner team pants, loaner matching jerseys and weekly ice practices unlike those other faculties. You don't pay extra to play on these teams because ice times and equipment are all subsidized by everyones UTSC school fees.
Here's the tryout schedule.
Ice Sports Arena (Markham Rd. & Passmore, south of Steeles)
All Teams (Men's and Women's)
Monday Sept 18 10:30 pm-11:30 pm
Tuesday Sept 19 10:30 pm-11:30 pm
Tuesday Sept 20 10:30 pm-11:30 pm
Commander Park Arena (north of Sheppard off McCowan)
Monday Sept 25 10-11 pm
Wednesday Sept 27 10-11 pm
Of course I have to mention this, since I coach one of the teams. :)

well it depends if you have classes on that day :lol:
in any case, some profs will go into detail about what is expected, how to do well, and succeed in university, since they will expect you are first year students. So for sure, they will go over the course outline; and they usually start teaching from day one, so be prepared with pen and paper.
any other questions welcome.

I FEEL SO GOOD! OH I FEEL SO GOOD! OH!
Honestly, I think that is the stupidest cheer. Makes the school look bad.
You're going to hate me, but I love that cheer. Mainly for the pelvic thrusts. :D
That's why you go for 1-2 days and chill for the remainder. Just get the contacts of those froshie members that you met and liked for future reference.
I'm staying for all three, the mini mosaic today was a blast, and I always have trouble getting contacts of people I meet. Don't ask me why, I just do. :P
I've had nothing but good times at UTSC...
I'm hopefully joining some sports teams too, but I don't want to wear myself too thin because I'm joining MESA and what not. I think intramurals will do it fine for me!
On a final note, the people here aren't too bad, if they aren't looking down on you for making an ass out of yourself. I'm one of the louder and more energetic people (Go nineteen!) and I'm always froshing this and froshing that. Everyone looks at me funny when I'm there making an ass of myself.
Mini mosaic today was pretty great though. Soul Power Crew and For Real (group?) inspired some more dance moves for me. It was great. Grabbed my MESA access card and joined the Filipino Students Association. Most people are really friendly, unless they have the "I look better than you" attitude. But whatever right? :D
Someone ask me how I feel again. :D

If you have already purchased the textbooks, I guess I should bring them right? Cause some people say profs don't really use textbooks in class. Plus, they are heavy.

I was told it depends on the prof, so just go to class the first day with something to just write. Then find out if your prof requires you to bring your book or not, then adjust accordingly! I'm sure you won't look STUPID if some people pull out their books and you don't. Share! Might make a new friend that way.

nothing to worry about... i usually didn't purchase my books till after the first class. and what usually happens is the prof shows up gives an outline and pretty much you're free to go.

I heard rumours floating around that they distinguish the campuses on the graduating diplomas/degrees now. That's why I chose UTSG over UTSC at the last minute.
And for that decision, I have to take the bus and subway for 1+ hour, and freakin walk to classes. I wish fold up electric scooters were legal.
The people who told you this were students from UTSC who didn't want you there.

Just wanted to drop in and say we raised about $11,000 today for Shinerama in the span of about.. an hour and a half, perhaps less. But that's pretty awesome for panhandling in the streets basically.
That SAC parade was CRAZY, Scarborough ate the other colleges alive and out yelled EVERYONEEE! We ended up having two trucks, one with our frosh leaders on it and one with speakers on it, and they blasted music and yelled for cheers as we followed the truck. It was a pretty great experience.
FROSH YOUUUUUU!
Oh, and Woodsworth College yelled "Didn't make the cut!" at us, so we yelled the "You read, you study, but you don't get laid!" cheer, and they began to walk away. Innis College came at us with some crap we couldn't hear because it wasn't synchronized, so we started chanting "WE GOT GUNS! WE GOT GUNS!" I loved it.

Heyyy, at least we were walking at a quick pace or running after the truck at times. Only a few times we had to stop (When the downtown colleges stopped)
Also, UTSG was going around during our Shinerama stopping traffic and doing cheers for a good 10 minutes. People were more pissed for that!

Basically, the S-Wing is weird. We entered the S-Wing from the front entrance and ran down the hall and found 319 randomly. Just remember, it's upstairs. Hidden in a little alcove thing, but it will say S319 on the wall.

Accounting -> Asian
Finance -> Asian
Marketing -> Half Asian (maybe less)
Strategic Mgmt -> Some Asian
HR -> Don't know
Int'l Business -> Half?
Public Management -> Few
Economic Data Analysis -> I didn't even know it existed
But yeah, and I bet close to 75% percent of the MGT people all belong to accounting, finance or marketing, so yeah, pretty dominated by asian in general.utsc has a HR major? i did not know that

Update:
Had the athletic coaches meeting last night and this year we're going to try getting all the hockey teams to mingle more.
As a start, the Men's and Women's hockey tryouts are now combined and the schedule/location has been changed. Note: Full Faceshield REQUIRED
Ice Sports Arena (Markham Rd. & Passmore, south of Steeles)
All Teams (Men's and Women's)
Monday Sept 18 10:30 pm-11:30 pm
Tuesday Sept 19 10:30 pm-11:30 pm
Tuesday Sept 20 10:30 pm-11:30 pm
Commander Park Arena (north of Sheppard off McCowan)
Monday Sept 25 10-11 pm
Wednesday Sept 27 10-11 pm
With each tryout, players are separated into teams according to skill level. And in the end, whoever is left over gets to play on my team.... :lol:
Some of the events in the works for the entire hockey program are:
Hockey Homecoming Kickoff Party
The "C" Team Band Night
The Leafs "Time of the Last Goal" Fundraising Lottery
The Hockey Teams' Ball Hockey Tournament
All fundraising is used for UTSC practice jerseys (every player will get one) and to subsidize the Athletic Banquet at the end of the year.
Also, for each game, school bus transportation is provided from the campus to Varsity Arena downtown.
EXCEPT we've gotten spanked at the hockey classic by UTM every year for the last 3 years... :)
For most teams, especially the 'R' recreational team (which consists of mostly beginners), it's not really about the winning or losing, it's more about the skill development and making friends.
Unless your destined to play in the NHL, for most this is the last chance for organized hockey/skill development they will have before being shipped out to Men's League.

i had a buddy miss more than the supposed allowed amount.

management co-op may sound really strict and all in tutorials, but really they are very lenient. They would never kick you out! since you pay that co-op fee and all.

personal opinion, first year is pretty damn easy to get a 3.5, which you will be set for co-op.
don't worry about what people tell you, u don't have to go mad nerd the entire semester either, just study when you need to. i mean, actually do study when you need to. you will be fine.
some general tips:
group work: work with smart kids! if you know your buddy joe is a party ***** and won't get the sh*t done on time, don't include him in the group! find out early on which kids are serious about school, which are not.
know thy prof/t.a: it helps when it comes to decide whether to give you a 79 or 80.
get past exams/assignments: do whatever it takes, bribe/death threats, make sure you get your hands on them.
have high expectations of yourself: if you expect to get 80s, you will likely get 80s or high 70s. so don't think you are not good enough.
interviews: have a slight cocky attitude goes a long way. dig up some current news about the company/background so you'll have cool questions to ask, of course you already know that.
if any of you found above tips useful and wishes to know more, feel free to take me out on lunch and i'll tell you more. lol. (dinner for all the ladies)

Hi there
I had applied to co op mgmt and i got accepted to pre prog with an 80% HS avg.
I already know how the program works and i just have a few general questions
1. When applying to co op BBA, are there spots open specifically only for pre program people, or do u have to compete with HS entry as well?
2. What are good electives to take that would help boost your GPA?
3. How hard is the math course for pre prog?
4. Other than a high gpa, what else is required to maximize my chances of getting into 2nd year?
Thanks :)

And another question, is it possible for pre-prog kids to get into MESA? because i really want to get involved so i have a good resume. What are other good extracurriculars to have?

I was also admitted into the pre-management program at UTSC from high school so I can help answer your questions.
1. When applying to co op BBA, are there spots open specifically only for pre program people, or do u have to compete with HS entry as well?
There are spots open specifically only for people in the pre-program. In the year I applied (2006) there were 170 spots I believe.
2. What are good electives to take that would help boost your GPA?
Take your into management courses, as many of those are easy. Also, take courses you are interested in, whether it be languages, philosophy, etc.
3. How hard is the math course for pre prog?
I don't know. It would be the same math course(s) as in the regular program. The required course has changed since I took it.
4. Other than a high gpa, what else is required to maximize my chances of getting into 2nd year?
I think GPA is the most important aspect, but other things include extra-curricular activies, volunteering, etc.
And yes, pre-program students can be involved in MESA.

Must revive this thread!!
My biggest complain about UTSC is the parking. First of all it's a big problem, it's an important problem, it's an easy problem to solve, and it would probably solve many other problems as well.
Why is it so expensive? I understand that many of the parking areas were paved just as a temporary measure of using the land, but even without those "extra parking spaces" we'd have PLENTY and I can dare say we would not have anywhere close to a fully parked lot. Don't even need to discuss anything like, the amount of money it takes to maintain it, to print permits etc, it's complete bull that it's $611 for two terms, which comes out to about $90 a month... ridiculous.
There's all this talk about why our campus life is so crap, why there's so little people hanging around campus, is it the facilities? is it the people? Even if you had a 10 pools and 10 gyms and 10 cafeterias, no one is going to pay a fortune (like what, $12 daily?) JUST for parking to use them.
As if cars and insurance and gas weren't enough already, the school also needs to jack up the price every single year to "promote campus life", yeah, hella working.
I could complain about this in my head but why not express it here. RFD one of the biggest places to do so, and maybe, just maybe, this could be the start of some changes. Media likes to pull things from websites nowadays too, hope they catch this.

You're making parking prices the root of UTSC's problems. The biggest problem with UTSC is that it is in the middle of nowhere. It's not close to any big malls or close to any pubs except the one down the street.

...There's always the bus... everyone I knew who went when I did took the bus. I didn't know a single person who used parking.
