Let's hope not. I'm going to make it very clear that we're not going to be playing games all the time in all my pitches.

then you would probably need to come up with more "scientific name" other than "video games bla bla bla". Try something like, "science and society club" or "information highway and the society". Today i would say people are more crazy about facebook and blackberry than video games. So think about how bb and internet f.cks up the new generation.

I tried contacting the uni. But still yet to get a reply and I'm unable to find info on their site. I'm looking to transfer my credits from centennial college in international business to the York international business business administration. Do they accept application for winter or is it only fall. I'm also looking for the business technology management program at Ryerson. They told me that it's only for fall, but I'm transferring my credits and not a first year is it true

Any help is appreciated. Thank you

Instead of contacting York, you should contact Schulich through the phone and asking them directly. You can call the undergraduate programs unit at 416-736-5081. According to their website, there is only ONE entry point per year for BOTH the BBA and IBBA programs (September of each year), so you will most likely not be able to start in winter. Even though you have some credits already from college, some of those credits may not be transferable (So if you took 10 credits last year at Centennial, maybe only 6 of those credits will count towards your university degree). Just give Schulich a call and see if they can give you more information on what your next steps should/could be.

Perhaps. I want to find other like minded individuals first before we brainstorm ideas for the name.

Not sure if anyone can answer this but, I'm going to be graduating in October.
Not enrolled in any courses for this upcoming term. But I'd like to use the gym, my YU card expires in April. Can I still get in for the gym?

Uhh I'd say theres more work to do. Can't say that it's difficult since they're both completely different subjects for me. 9cred courses may be 4 hours of class per week, whereas 6cred courses are 3 hours per week.

You'd have to pay for the original membership fee of $80?
Or try applying for the alumni card now. You only get like $10 discount anyway.

for your first year you can do the 3 program course rather than the 4 courses. What I mean is you take a 9credit SOSC, 9 Credit HUMA and a 6 credit NATS and you offcially done your first year, rather than taking the 4x6 credit courses which includes the 6 credit MODR.

No..I basically work on every issue for the whole university (not alone) except for student labs....different department. The system for you guys to get into residence..taken care of by us, the system that checks your marks/status...all of students services...us too. And everything in between...including all the professors..and no I can't get you the exams before hand :) And I will also clear up the parking thing for all you guys that "seem" to know how it works. Basically if you get parking tickets and dont pay..you dont get your diploma. Period. Now people will say if I take my dad's car...etc..etc..but it doesn't work..if it's registered to the same address it matters...that's all. If you decide your going to use your friends car or relative's car that doesn't even live with you..they got that covered also..since they always have your name...with your name and student number goes the charges..so when you graduate no matter what you drive or live...your name and student number are the same and all charges...including bookstore/library and parking go with you.

I'm taking my daughter and her bf to the guided campus tour tomorrow. I went with my daughter the first time we did the tour but now I'd rather get some work done while they go on the tour.

Is there a free wifi hotspot (perhaps in the food court area?) that is unsecured and accessible to anyone? Or do I need to leave the campus?

TIA

If your daughter or her bf has a York account then you can use their login for AirYork.
Or you can try your luck by Vanier, or another residence area, hoping someone forgot to add a pssw to their network.

Does anyone know of any good gym's near York University? I know they have one on campus, but it doesn't really look too good and it seems like it'll get really crowded. I'll be living on campus so something within walking/busing distance is preferred. I know there's a goodlife fitness, but those are usually on the expensive side. Any suggestions welcome!

Yeah, the weight room at Tait McKenzie can get pretty packed but I've had absolutely no problems with it being overcrowded early in the morning. If I'm not mistaken, McLaughlin College has a gym open 24/7 so you could try that out as well (I'm not apart of that college so I don't know much regarding overcrowding or it being a good facility). As far as a good gym outside of York, I really wouldn't know of one.

Hey guys, I'm a third year BAS marketing student and I need some suggestions on taking a 3 credit elective.

ADMS 4515 Internal Audit with Larry Yarmolinsky if he is still gonna teach it. Great prof, incorporates his experiences as an auditor into the course so his lectures are not boring at all. His exams are easy which is pretty much all application base and is based on the cases you hand in. So if you do them you're set.

If you put some effort, you should at least end up with a B+. Good luck!

Early in the morning as in what time? While I like working out in the morning, I'm an eighteen year old that will be living away from his parents for the first time so the chances of late nights/waking up late will be high:o

Lectures (LECT). No matter what your program, you will be expected to attend lectures. These usually consist of a professor lecturing to a room of students (anywhere from 50 to 500 in years one and two). Lectures will focus on assigned readings and provide information for small-group discussion.

Tutorials (TUTR). These follow lectures (though not always on the same day) and are composed of a small group of students (15-30) discussing course material. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the discussion. Tutorials are taught by professors or teaching assistants (TAs).

Nearly all courses have lectures, but not all courses have tutorials.

Lectures are geared towards large groups of students. Tutorials are where you're broken up into smaller groups. There's more emphasis on discussion/participation in tutorials.

Check this link if you already haven't.

A lecture is when the professor actually lectures on the course material. A tutorial is when you get together in smaller groups and the teacher's assistant answers questions and clarifies concepts discussed during the lecture.

Okay so im first year student..and im confused whats the difference between a turtorial and lecture?..

Dont forget ..or you may not know yet...you are not marked for attendence for Lecture..you are for Tutorial. At the end of the day your an adult..the university treats you like one. If you don't want to attend a course you don't need your mommy to sign you out...you just dont show up...your house wont get a call that you skipped...they dont care. If you attend you learn if you dont oh well. As far a lecture like many have said it's a large group...sometimes 4-500 students that are all facebooking :) j/k well some are, the rest are txt'n their friends. The tuturials are the same 4-500 students broken down in groups of 20-30, which most, but not always it taught by the TA rather than the professor. Depending on how you learn and take it all in, will depend on if you need to attend both, one or for some students none at all. Most students you will find as you progress into your second semester and on don't go to lecture and go only to tutorial to pick up what was said in lecture...you decide.

There are two different courses at York that I'm interested in and I would really like to take the both of them this year, except the lecture times are conflicting. The Geog 1000 course has 2 lectures per week, but one of them falls during a lecture for another course I'm taking. It would be like this for the entire fall/winter term. So I would basically be missing 1 lecture (or half of 2 lectures) per week.

Does anyone have any advice to offer on whether I can get into any trouble from the university by doing this? I figure as long as I pay for my courses and my marks are ok then all should be well. Unless there might be some rules about this which I am unaware of.

No trouble, they dont care what you sign up for or do...it's up to you to be at class. I have personally taken the GEOG1000 course and poss...the second one your thinking about if your major is Geography and I would say that missing a lecture in 1000 if you have professor Wood, is a no-no...you need every class with her. Last time is was Dr. Flusty for the first half and Wood for the second...with Flusty if you miss one it's not to bad.

I went to academic orientation when I was starting first year (this was 3 years ago).

I found it a waste of time to be honest. They go over basic information that's already available online.

90% of what they told us I already knew. They said it was mandatory but you won't really miss anything big if you don't go.

My question is probably stupid, but for my OSAP pickup, its says for me to bring "A void cheque or banking information with your name and address of your bank, account number, transit number and branch ID number."

I don't have cheques, so I have to bring banking information. So what banking information do I bring? I only have some documents when I first started my bank account, my bank card, and my passbook. Are these acceptable? My bank is TD is that helps.

Yes you can use it if you included your mom's name in the documents somewhere. Just don't forget to tell her to sign it. Honestly, i think York doesn't give a rat's ass who pays for your education. They only need the money and they won't care where it came from ;)

I'm a Glendon student and I'm taking one course at Keele this year. ADMS 2500. The bookstore website says it is an e-book, and currently not available. For e-books, do I have to go to the bookstore and wait in line to pay for a pin code? Why wouldn't an e-book be available. I'm trying to avoid the bookstore at all costs. Anybody else had to purchase an e-book before?

go here: http://bookstore.yorku.ca/index_nocache.cfm?index=TextbookSearch&course_display_format=2

add the courses you took, then it will show you the optional and required books. Personally I wait until the first day to get confirmation from the professor because there have been some occasions where they said that even the required textbook is optional. So it's up to you.

usually not, but some profs/tas do introductions during them if for example a Tutorial is on Monday and a Lecture is on Friday. So find out for yourself. Check ur York email, cuz cancellation notices of tutorials usually end up there

Hi, I recently switched majors and now I'm with the LA&PS faculty. I'm a bit confused with the general ed requirements. I need a total of 18 credits, and it lists 4 areas. Do I have to spread my 18 credits over all 4 of them. Or can I just do 6 credits in 3 of those.

this is what's posted:

The following are required:

18 credits of General Education chosen from approved courses in Humanities, Modes of Reasoning, Natural Science and Social Science, including a minimum of six credits in each of three areas: Humanities, Modes of Reasoning, Natural Science and Social Science.

You only have to pick 3 from these choices: Humanities, Modes of Reasoning, Natural Science and Social Science

3 x 6 credits=18

Gen Eds don't count towards the outside the major requirement.

Credits Outside the Major

Credits outside the major are courses which are intended to broaden the educational experience of students beyond their area of specialization. Credits outside the major include most courses which are not used to fulfill the general education requirements or major/minor requirements. Please refer to programs of study section for program specific information.

Courses which are not considered as fulfilling the credits outside the major requirement:

* major/minor courses taken above the required number, non-major/minor courses taken within the major/minor subject (e.g. AP/FR 1020 6.00 is a non-major French course);
* courses outside the major/minor taken to fulfill major/minor requirements;
* courses which are cross-listed or designated as course substitutes to courses offered by the major/minor program (e.g. SC/MATH 1530 3.00 is cross-listed to AP/ECON 1530 3.00 );
* cross-listed courses used to fulfill the major requirements may not also be used to fulfill the outside the major credits requirement.

it varies a lot from course to course. Some offer videos of a lecture, some just offer a lot of notes, some tell you to just read some stuff then you gotta just show up to exams, some make you hand in assignments online every week or every once in a while. Could be a mix of all of those. They are all wildly different depending on the course itself, and of course the professor.

Overall it has been a positive experience for me, I've taken about 3 or 4 of them.

edit: btw I have a myeconlab code that I never used so whoever bought a used textbook or doesn't have myeconlab code for whatever reason, I'll sell it for cheaper than the stores do.

First of all, you shouldn't be concerned about profs and TA since different people have different preferences. One TA i had was a bit.h noone except me got a long with her, so it depends.

Now some reviews.

Myles. He is a very simple guy. He doesn't try to show off, and if you have any questions, just approach him with "Yo, Myles".. He is that simple.

Nachshon He is one of my TA's too this year. I don't think that he is that bad.

Andreas He is another TA for one of my classes this year, and I think that he'd be tough. He is already a PhD, and he is pretty old. I'd assume he will be a bit cocky and will try to show off his ego. I may be wrong.

SOCI2030. Well, if your prof is Fred Diamond, then you are fu.ked up already and no TA will help you. But if you get a chance to get a young guy (Josh i believe) that has a beard, then he is really nice. He is very unorganized, but he knows that he is and he is pretty funny about it lol. If you have a girl named Krista, then she is ok too. She looks smart, and she will load you with work. My final paper was over 40 pages long, and she still wasn't happy about it. But it's worth attending her tutorials just because she is HOT..

Andreas is a horrible TA, doesn't do **** in class and it is very hard to understand what he's saying as he grumbles a LOT. He also doesn't have an e-mail and laptop as his last gf apparently stole his laptop (not sure about this year). errr you were supposed to enroll in winter courses when you enrolled in your fall courses in the summer when enrolment opened for you. Between now and Winter you can add a course whenever you like (for the winter semester).

I did a 6 credit course in one semester in my first year, and it was a 3000 level course at that. Downside is that it's really time consuming, two 3 hour classes per week put me to sleep but it's definitely possible if you're down for that. Just expect more classes, and possibly increased workload if it's the type of course that actually has homework and not just lecturing.

I had the opportunity to be in Bastine's 2650 tutorial last year. Tutorials are fun. His marking is pretty fair but you still have to work for the A. In order to get the A, you have to define the concept that's asked and expand and relate with other course material. Last year, the tricky part was to have it done in a concise manner. Nicholas appears to like answers short and sweet. Also, he's one of those guys that you can find up in the Ross Building and have a nice chat, whether it's about school or girls. LOL. I think his office is back in Osgoode this year ? He's doing his PhD in law, so if you're interested in attending law school, he has a lot to share.:lol:

Try starting up a conversation with those who sit around you in lectures/tutorials. You'll be surprised with how many people are afraid to initiate a conversation. You probably won't be friends with most of the people you talk to but you'll definitely find a couple to have lunch with or chill with.

I'm taking the course too so will see.. I wanted to avoid the other guy, because I heard so many bad things from people I know. My friend said this guy isn't too bad, but still has those wtf moments. Btw I don't know which TA is in which, but I have taken a class with the female one. She's alright and a fair marker (Got like B+'s on some essays).

Does anyone here park near the village at evening time? I haven't park there for a while and today I noticed that the area has those "1HR 8am-8pm" signs. Is it still safe to park there and avoid tickets, say from 7pm to 10pm? Thanks.

I got ticketed there recently, so it's not a safe haven.

Some days you'll get away with it though.

if you park at 6:50pm you should be fine. that gives you about 10min to get to class.

i parked there during this years fall, winter and summer semester and never gotten a ticket once during my 7-10 classes. this was 3-4 days a week.

but thats the risk you're taking parking there.

I saw some posts about how to make friends at York. I have to say its a little tough, York is huge and people seem to be divided by racial groups. Just say hi to the person next to you and ask what year they're in and sit beside them every class. Ask them if they wanna study. If they say no? Then whatever, lol their lost. Missed a cool friend!

As for clubs just go to their offices and talk to someone there.

Here are a few clubs that actually have regular meetings and activities so you can meet people:

YDS, York Debate Society. Really well organized club that teaches you to debate and do public speaking.
AIESEC. Also another organized club housed in the Schulich building for students interested in participating in international internships, or helping students from aboard score an internship in Canada.
Any sports clubs
The CHRY radio station on the 3rd floor of the student centre has lots of volunteer positions, you can meet tonnes of people there.

Club week is next week I think? So check that out. But be sure to ask if the clubs you're interested in actually have you actively participate. A lot of these social clubs just have you pay a membership fee and all you get out of it is a card and invites to events where you don't know anyone, but everyone knows each other.

I never liked student life at York but man there are so many hot girls that are just down to chill!!!!! Just spot out those really quiet looking cuties in class that look around a lot. Sit down and say "HI WHATS YOUR NAME". Aw and Blueberry Hill. Damn I miss York!!

Speaking from my own experience, ECON 1000 was a very easy course. I took the course with Professor Song and both the exams were all multiple choices, midterm worth 40% and the final was 60%. Questions were straight from the course texts, simple calculations and graph readings. However, I did hear other profs were more challenging.

Also, POLS 1000 with Professor Plekhanov was a mediocre course. I think it really depends on the TA that you have. I was lucky to get a good TA and I managed to walk away from the course with a good mark.

Business and Society is Social Science courses so there will be lots of research papers
BPA is a half & half blend of business courses and political science. Best (worst?) of both worlds

in north york there is only 2 people I trust with my hair. One is a woman named fatima who works at centre point mall (there are 3 hair cut places there, she works at the one closest to the entrance next to canadian tire), and the other one is an asian woman who works at the same place whose name I'm forgetting. I'm kind of picky too but they're really nice and listen for exactly what you want, especially the first one.

First thing, you might be a really good person, but lose the homophobia, "pretty cool guy, no homo." Chances are 10% or more of the people you will meet here are gay, but even if it was none or just one: stop it; learn to get along with everyone, and people will befriend you and respect you too.

You say you are taking "human rights/international law." You know you can get bounced from that for expressing such views in the wrong context, right? Worse, you are going to miss out on great experiences and meeting great people this way. Some might even be from the same place you are from.

I hope you get to meet people and explore the city, as it's not as friendly as the Maritimes but there is a lot on offer.

man, get used to this forum. It is full of trolls who think they are so awesome and if they study at uni, then they belong to some sort of royal group. Don't take everything said here serious. The truth is that Toronto (perhaps equally to Montreal) is crowded with homosexual people, whether you like it or not, and some people, even if they don't support this kind of relationship, still try to act in a liberal way, because liberalism nowadays is "popular" and is rapidly evolving.

Thats more than enough time, I believe they kick you out 10 minutes before its over. The lanes are divided into 6 lanes, 3 different speed(slow, medium, fast). Fast lane is people who can do laps no problem, and medium is for people who need a breather here and there. I doubt you need the slow lane if your asking about swimming. Its so true that you said that..because i emailed the TA today and thats excatly the response i got.."Can't have more then 25 students in class"..i know thats pure ******** because i attended that tutorial and theres barely 10 people there -_-. Either ppl dropped out this week..and their still technically on the attendance..or their totally giving us a hard time for no reason.

Im losing money because i can't work on that day. >:(

Anyone have any experience with any sort of computer gaming club on campus?

Way back when I played a lot of Brood War and recently have been playing a lot of Starcraft. Also excited for SW TOR, hopefully it doesn't turn out to be WoW clone garbage.

Thanks for your very informative response Shev.

I do work out, however mainly cardio. I have no desire to do anything other than lift some weights a few times a week.

I don't work a labour job so why would I bother spending all this time to sculpt my body, in my opinion it's all redundant as long as you eat well and exercise your heart.

Also, have you really not heard of Nas before?

I'm not trolling, I am just a different music type guy. I listen to what's worth listening.

i was using gym last year, but whenever i came, it was packed, so i had to wait in line to use the machine. Now i just go to the Community Centre right beside my house. I'd go there too, but i live in Mississauga, so i don't want to sit in my car covered with sweat..

Has anyone volunteered at York or volunteered somewhere else but got the placement through York? I'm thinking of signing up but I'm not sure how it all works. Where do I start? Is there a single, central listing service that shows all the positions available? Ideally, I'd like to volunteer on campus for an hour or two a week. Are there many opportunities at the Keele Campus? Is there a shortage or oversupply of volunteers at York? Do newcomers have a lot of choice? Is there anything I should be aware of?

You'd have to contact your faculty to open up a seat for you, if it was restricted they should have been able to do that for you at the appointment.

Also, something I've done several times is for courses that are full I've still shown up and attended lectures waiting on seats to open. I've always managed to get into the courses I wanted because people always drop.

Question about finances in our student accounts page. My current balance is in green then I click see all transactions. When I click that it shows me an updated balance with an amount like this: " -XXX.XX".

I don't owe anything because I already paid the amount needed which was in green on main page. The detailed page shows that I have paid for the green amount on main finances page. I also requested that I get reimbursed for YFS dental fees and it shows that it did give it back. Basically, I am confused about why it shows a negative amount after I paid the fees last month and the dental fees were already returned back. I paid everything and it gives the impression that there is still an amount owed? Please help as soon as possible.

PS. What is Flex on our YorkU student card?

A negative balance due mean you overpaid by xxx.xx amount. Means they owe you. You can request a refund on that or use it towards your future charges. Google "York request refund student statement"

Summer semester is not complicated, it is the same thing as a regular semester. There is no reading week though. Look up the specific course you want to take and it will show how the lectures are scheduled. From my experience, a 6 credit course will be 3hours lecture + 1tutorial.

It really depends on the 6 credit course you're taking. I took a psych course last summer and it was the worst course experience I've had to gone through at York but a couple of summers ago, I was fine taking 2x3 credit courses (introductory economic courses).

Even when the course load is light, it kinda sucks taking summer school because all your friends are hanging out while you're doing readings or in a lecture

Which is easier? ADMS 1000 or ECON 1010?

It ultimately depends on which prof you get. Some are easy, others are difficult.

I took ADMS 1000 with Peter Modir and ECON 1010 with Cliff Jutlah. I found ADMS far easier but ECON wasn't too bad either.

Take this info with a grain of salt though. If you have a different prof for ADMS, the course may be a lot harder. Likewise, having a different prof for ECON may mean a significantly easier class.

If there's one thing I learned in university, it's to not judge a course based on the course title/description, but solely on the prof.

Your current faculty doesn't know how the other faculties operate. Go directly to your destination faculty.

A full course load (100%) is 15 credits per term, 9 credits will be the 60% load is all terms. 18 is the summer max by over-enrolling similar to taking 33 or 36 credits in the F/W terms.

I don't know if it will be held in the summer, but I've taken the course. The "cyber" part of it mostly comes from the fact that it's an online course. It's a course about the development, growth, and evolution of cities and communities. How its tied to transportation and job opportunities. Why different economic classes locate where they do.

From what I remember, we had an open-book at-home online multiple choice mid-term exam, an on-campus final exam, and two papers. Plus some online discussion participation.

I got the cheque also but I need help with this question urgent:

York gave us that degree audit tool now and I randomly tried it and it says I have not completed the minimum general education requirement where I must take a 1000 level Natural Science Course.
I took:

"SC/NATS 1930 6.00: General Education The Science of Computation"

and the audit clearly recognizes it is a general education course from natural science at 1000 level. It wants me to have completed instead these natural science courses:

"Still Required: 6 Credits from

Yep it's not on this list

But it might be grandfathered if it is not offered anymore. Call your home department, they will be able to help you.

This is so stupid, the academic advisor set me up with this course. When do I book an appointment now, the stupid site doesn't even allow people to book appointments until one day only. Since the course is not even on the general education list, will they still be able to give me credit to meet the requirement since it was a 1000 level course with 6 credits?

For everyone's reference. I got it through email. I am still frustrated that I was told to sign up for a course costing $1200 clearly meeting the requirements still and now the school may not recognize it. If academic advisor tells me that I have to do another course, is there a way I can take this higher?

The appointments, online course selection is joke. It never works properly.:(

Got Bursary in account its quite large. I guess because of large OSAP.

Hi everyone, im wondering if anyone has had experience with a deferred fall exam, particularly in math?

This was my first time getting sick during the exam period, and i couldn't make it. I have the sick note and everything ready, im just curious of when i would have to write it. The exam was on Dec. 11, 2011 and this course (Math 2030) is also being taught next semester.

You will still get credit for the course. Call your department, they will be able to help you. There are processes for this kind of stuff.

faculty is not the same as the department. the faculty advising is available Tuesdays, 10am or noon, I forget which. You should call your Program Coordinator/Secretary/Assistant directly. i.e the Economics department. They will contact the manager of student relations on your behalf. That is the proper way to solve your issue. P.M. me if you want names and numbers.

I love Presto! I set it to autofill to $40 every time it goes down to $20 so I never have to worry about the balance running low. I used it for Viva this semester until the strike started. Now I use it for the GO Bus. The great thing about GO Bus is that Presto stops charging you once you get to the price of a monthly pass. Single fares are discounted 7.5%, or 15% if you get your Presto card tagged as a student.

A bonus for choosing Presto is that sometimes the Presto machine goes down and you get to ride the bus for free :)

Gen Eds are supposed to teach critical skills. Poor performance in Gen Ed courses may be a red flag on an application, however some grad schools only look at your last 60 credits or upper year credits and don't give a crap about what you did in first year. It all depends on what the selection committee chooses to set the requirements as.

Ok now here is some info i need - dont know if this is possible but i will ask you guys here:

I am in the B.A.S program - 3 year program (90 credits), although I have 105 credits done, I am just thinking to graduate with 90 credits and not wait till 120 is done in honours. I am already enrolled in CFA program and will focus onto that and write the exam in June . I can graduate right away, i am meeting all requirements except 2 courses - STATS (ADMS 2320) AND MANAGERIAL ACCOUNTING (ADMS 2510).

Heres what happened. I took these 2 courses earlier and I failed. I took them again and I failed. The third time when I took, I got a C+ in Stats and C in managerial accounting. Their policy is, not to repeat any course more than once. I did twice and I passed. Now apparently, these two passing grades are not counting. Only the two Fs are counting and technically I cannot graduate. I had submitted a petition to drop the two failing grades and even a WAIVER that if they dont want to drop those courses, I am fine, as long as my passing grades count. The petition reply came yesterday in the mail saying I didnt follow the rules:
1) Failure to drop courses prior to drop date deadline if I knew I was gonna fail.
- Infact, till the midterm I was passing, but final being 50% for stats and 65% for managerial made me fail twice. I had some personal commitments for which I couldnt concentrate after the midterm.

2) The set rule that I cannot repeat courses more than twice.

Now, I understand it is my fault because at that time, I had no clue about the 2nd rule. I thought you could repeat as many times you want but I didnt knew.

The petition committee just based the decision based on "set rules" and not at all thinking reasonably and logically. I am DONE. All I need to do is get those credits count and graduate. In addition, I have passed those courses too. Also, the courses which I took after has these 2 courses as their prerequisites and I passed them successfully too, with a C and higher. So definitely I have the knowledge for these courses. Cant they just realize that I am DONE and I just need to graduate and holding back graduation based on two courses (which are technically done) is just pure nonsense?

Is there anyone who can really talk to in person about this? The advisors are just useless and they will tell me to petition again, which will take 6 months to go through. I had submitted my petition on June 30, and I got a response on Dec. 19, like, common.

Who can I really contact or talk to so they understand my situation in this scenario and who is also logical?? Tough question eh?

No need to retake the same elective class again. But in order to graduate you need a specific amount of credits so you'll have to make up for it. Summer classes are an option if you wanna get it done quicker/without cramming too many courses at once.

Course description for PSYC 3010 includes "NCR: No credit will be retained for this course for students who have successfully completed or who are currently enrolled in AK/HH/PSYC 4800."

What I gather from that is that if you have already taken 4800 before taking 3010, or if you are taking 4800 and 3010 together during the same semester, you will not receive a credit for 3010. What happens if you choose to take 4800 after 3010? Still no credit for 3010?

Don't be so hard on yourself. It's your first year. However, you just have to work harder this term, as well as any remaining years in order to pull up your cumulative average. I'm not sure how law schools work, but some are probably B+ averages and a high score on the LSAT would also work in your favor.

Toronto police are looking for a man who allegedly snuck into women’s washrooms at York University, stuck his cellphone under one stall and leered over another.

The incidents happened in separate washrooms at Curtis Lecture Hall on Monday. The first occurred at 6 p.m. when two women were using the bathroom and noticed a man in the stall beside them reach under with a cellphone in his hand. They left and the man fled.

Then, at 8:30 p.m., a woman using a different washroom in the same building saw a man looking over the stall. He fled again.

Police are looking for one suspect, a brown man aged 20 to 25, with a chinstrap beard, dark eyes and black hair, in relation to both incidents. He was wearing a grey knitted sweater, blue jeans, grey shiny sneakers and a grey toque.

VERY hard. But if you were smart enough, you'd contact the advisor directly through email asking if he/she has a free time during the week. In 90% of the time they will ask you to drop by the next day.

why do you want to be a walking advertisement?

I want to show a little school pride. My UofT buddies thinks I would be too ashamed of York to wear York gears out. I am not. And I like our school's colour. They are just so pricey. I sometimes hang out with my buddies at St. George campus and I wouldn't mind letting those kids know I go to York.

It's not quite the situation to show pride. But well if you want to pay 50$ for sweater when you can get the same in Winners for 10$, then go ahead. That's the way they make money, play on students' sense of "pride". Personally i never wore anything like that and never will, my own sense of pride is way stronger.

Yes, I do want to show school pride but being a careful spender is more important to me (RFD style) so that is why I did not spend $50 on a sweater, by the way, the one that I wanted is priced at $79.99  and was asking if anyone knew how I can get a deal. I am thinking about just getting the symbol/design and then hitting up Chinatown to get it made on a unlabeled red sweater for way less

$10 for a sweater at winners is a good deal. The average is at $29.99. I am assuming you are talking about on clearance stuff which are great steals but most of the time it is hard to find items in my size :( but when I do find things in my size boy does it feels good.

I don't get why the sweaters are priced so high. AFAIK, the sweaters at other universities are priced around the $30-40 point.

I was at the bookstore on Thursday and there were some hooded sweaters on sale for like $30 but the price for the rugby one sucks.

Who profits from the bookstore? The school? Everything is overpriced. I would never get my textbooks from there. I only bought a course kit from there because I had to and tried to use the coupon that they gave at the beginning of the year but they said they can't discount course kits.

i'd say everything at the bookstore is meant for on-campus students who can afford paying extra. I'm cheap so i'd rather save those 100$ rather than buy the sweater that will eventually lose colour after first laundry wash..

Be careful girls.

Why were they two females in one stall in the first place?

Couple of questions for summer school. If I signed up for a course now, but decide later like in late April or early May, I cannot do the course any more, can I still drop-out without any penalties? When does fees have to be paid by and is there enrolment deposits as well? Also do more courses get added as days go by or are these only courses offered?

umop
Feb 8th, 2012, 03:16 PM
You can add/remove courses as many times as you wish without penalty before the term starts.

Fees have to be paid by the first day of classes, although paying in later months isn't uncommon (a minor interest charge is tacked on though). There is an enrolment deposit.

The courses you see now will almost certainly be the only ones available. Selection is always limited in the summer. It's possible they might add or cancel a course/section, but don't count on it.

Does anyone else notice and appreciate the increasing openness and honesty of the profs as the years go by? Most of my profs tell it how it is - globalization is a joke, Harper is a joke, etc. As years go by more and more of what is happening behind the curtains is being exposed.

The profs and TAs teaching politics related classes at York are heavily leftist(communist/socialist).

This is in quite contrast to the 50's, for example, where the curriculum was strictly controlled by religious and governmental educational parties.

I don't know I wasn't alive back then not even my parents were.

The only question that remains is; what is the end result of all this? What's gonna happen in 30 years, when all of this is out in the open?

Viva la Revolution!

I'm taking an online course called FILM 1701, Hollywood: Old and New. Don't think its offered in the summer, but I can explain the online part.

This course uses WebCT. I'm not sure about other online courses. In terms of handing in assignments, you basically submit them before 11:55 PM in a certain due date in this class. So you can technically wait till the last minute to hand stuff in. TAs mark assignments in this course. We don't have exams for this class. Readings and lectures are posted online. But honestly, those are completely useless, in this course anyway.

So basically, one prof is Sadia Mariam Malik and the term is S1, and the other prof would be Xueda Song and the term is S2.

If anyone knows which prof is better between the 2 in terms of easiness, helpfulness (since i dont have any background in econ) I will really appreciate it! I dont mind the term length that much, as long as if one professor is a bit more flexible and easier with how they give out reviews and all that.

Taking the same thing! What you get on assignment 1? I hate the lectures and they offer nothing for the assignment and can't question on the readings becuase I only did some but my TA wanted to see more of reading related stuff in my first assignment lol.

In general, for me anyways, I think online courses are bad personally. Sometimes you forget you have them since it's online and not a physical class so you may not do the readings and be behind in the lectures.

I took FILM1701 in 1st year I believe.. not a bad class, subjective marking though to say the least.. If the online format is like that, then I'm not worried at all, it was quite organized and the workload was extremely lax.

Hey guys,

So I've been worrying about a problem that I've been having as the end of the school year approaches. To put it shortly, I have pretty extreme social anxiety. Knowing that, I thought it would go away as the school year started. I was wrong.

What ended up happening was I didn't go to any classes pretty much, and only studied if the specific course had online notes or lectures. Right now I'd say I'm failing 3/5 courses. I'm really worried about what to do next. I'm 20, and I'm thinking about taking a year off next semester to go see psychiatrists or whatever. I don't think that's too bad, since I didn't feel ready for university and most people I see at York are around the 23-30 age range.

Is this a good idea? What do I do next? Can you take exclusively online courses? Does taking a year off and going back when I'm 21 mean I'm destined for failure? I know I wasted a year of osap and I wish I could go to classes and participate and contribute but I get constant panic attacks where I can't even breathe properly and can't focus because of their severity.

I am sorry to hear how bad your anxiety has gotten. Have you spoken to an academic advisor? Maybe they can make an accommodation for you somehow. The last time I spoke to my advisor she really broke things down for me and helped me quite a bit with my school plans.

You sound like you are pretty hung up on the age thing. I don't think it makes any difference if you are 18 or 21 when going to university. How does the university degree fit into your future career path/plans and how much work you are putting into your studies should matter much more.

----------------------------
I need to get some general elective credits this summer. Who here has taken AP/SOSC 1000 - Intro to Social Science or AP/MODR 1730 - Reasoning About Social Issues ?

You've taken that before? How is it like? I was interested in that course but didn't take.

Taking it right now. Pretty straight forward. He has lecture slides that you copy and he quizzes you on it every week. 50% on quizzes, 10% essay, 10% test x 3 and 10% 'attendance'.

If you go to lecture and do your quizzes, you automatically get the 10% attendance grade. The quizzes and tests are purely memorization. Quizzes probably required you to take memorize 1/2-1 page of material in M/C or fill in the blanks and tests are a little bit more difficult, more content to memorize.

The content itself is pretty interesting. I like hip hop so I enjoy the lectures for the most part. Also, I was able to listen to new artists which was pretty cool.

Hey guys, I have a question..
Im a first year student at york, undecided major.
I've decided that I want to go into BHRM.. Heres the thing though,
My marks are all B's and C+'s except for this one NATS course thats killing me. Currently getting a D, which will probably either remain a D, or turn into an F after exams/final papers. I calculated my GPA, and worst case scenario (F), I end up with a 4.0 GPA. If I maintain the D, I'm around 4.5.
BHRM asks for a 5.0, since I'm taking summer classes as well, I'm pretty confident I can raise it to a 5.0.

The catch is, york requires undecided majors to pick a major after the completion of 18 credits.. Since I also need the 4U math highschool credit as a pre-req for entering BHRM, I wouldnt be able to get into BHRM right now anyways (taking the 4U math at a private school over summer - no, not the shady ones you buy your credit at).

Once summer is complete, I *should* be at a 5.0 GPA, and have my 4U math.. Till then, should I just delcare philosophy or something as my major? I'm going to be booking an advising appointment this week, but thought I'd ask here for some insight as well.

We've listened to artists like The Sugar Hill Gang, The Roots, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Wu Tang Clan. Also, some Canadian hip hop artists from the 90s like the Maestro and Dream Warriors as well, pretty cool stuff.

As for the content on the quizzes, it's mainly trivial. Information about the artists such as their birth names, what city they're from, and discography or popular songs. Very straight forward. Tests are just a tad more challenging. You have more 'scholarly' articles about the state and evolution of hip hop. Once again, it's very simple. Straight forward, pure effort and memorization. No tricks.

You'll enjoy it if you like hip hop and wanna find a lil bit more about the roots and where the music came from.

I took ITEC 1010 last semester with Prof. Campeanu.
The course is pretty easy if you have prior computer knowledge,
even if you don't, I don't think it's that difficult.
The course is pretty dry though.

So far, it's the easiest ITEC course I've taken.

I'm taking PSYC 1010 right now with Jill Rich. Overall, it is easy if you study and read the whole text book. Tests are mostly multiple choice with some short answers. Class average is pretty low though. I wouldn't say its a bird course because you have to study hard to do well.

What can you do to appeal a final grade if prof and TA not willing to change? Registrar page seems to say that you can appeal marked work but won't be able to appeal work which was oral so if a professor makes course evaluation primarily focus on oral work and you lose most marks there, no appeal then I think.

Anyone take intro to psych with rebecca jubis? I'm taking the online section with her. I'm wondering how easy or difficult it is to get an A in her class?

I just took Online PSYCH1010 with Jubis.
Class is pretty straight forward.
4 Tests, each of them on four chapters.
Then an assignment where you have to complete a behaviour modification program on yourself.
No midterm and no final. I walked away with a B+.
Do the work and you'll do fine.

Now with a question of my own!

I'm trying to get into a class that is currently 'Reserved' for first year students.
Can anyone give me a couple pointers on how I can squeeze myself in?
Is there anything I can say in emails or anything that can help my chances?

Thanks!

Also, has anyone rented textbooks from the bookstore before? In the checkout proceedings it says I have to pay $20 for shipping? Couldn't this possibly be opted out of if I just go over there and pick up the book myself? I'm a Visiting Student so I don't know how things work normally here.

I want to register in a course that seems to be open to only students of a specific program. Would I be able to somehow still register for that particular course even though I am not part of that specific program?

I don't see why not unless the course have pre-reqs that you don't have. I find that sometimes the online enrolling system will not let you enroll in the course but if you go to the department of the course and talk to someone they can help you get in.

If the job is tied to your career growth, great! If not, maybe consider spending a summer doing an intern. That would help you towards your career goals too.

I wished my job is related to my career growth. But the only experiences that remotely relates to my career goals I can get at the moment is of the free labour sort --> volunteer. My paid job isn't so bad. I make a good amount of money and I do gain more customer service experience + really flexible hours to accommodate my often packed schedule (really helps a lot during exams).

One of my volunteer jobs involves taking on the role similar to that of a counsellor which I thought I might have liked but I am starting to feel that maybe the work doesn't suit me. I still want to be in the healthcare/therapy field but in another role that involves more physical activity so my Psyc (science stream) degree might not be ideal. I am thinking of switching to Kine and have more of a physically active approach to counselling/therapy kind of career. Heck at this point Nursing seems to be not such a bad career option too. I will be working in healthcare and I will have to be on my feet often. I have looked at York's Nursing program too. I need to take more courses to sort of get a better idea of where my interest lies combined with the volunteer experiences helps. I don't think I can sit still until September to come around to work on my career plans so I welcome my summer courses with open arms. It is a good thing that my program jump won't be too much of a differences for me so I didn't really waste my time. My buddy wants to go from Nursing to Accounting so that is like a whole new game plan altogether.

I'm taking an online course but I don't know where to go to access my course information. Am I suppose to go to the moodle website or something? On the moodle website it doesn't list any of my courses.

The best thing to do would be to call the admissions department and speak to them and also review the transfer information on the YorkU website.

Has anyone taken the following courses:

Intro. Mathematics for Economists I (AP ECON 1530)
Intro. Mathematics for Economists II (AP ECON 1540)
Introduction to Microeconomics (AP ECON 1000)
Introduction to Macroeconomics (AP ECON 1010)
Information and Organizations (AP ITEC 1010)
Markets and Democracy: The Development of Industrial Society (AP SOSC 1520)
Computers, Information and Society (SC NATS 1700)

If so, how were they? Did you do well in them?

It depends on the profs. If you have easy ones, you'll do well. If you have tough ones, you might have to put in more effort.

I took every course you listed except ITEC and SOSC. They were straight-forward for the most part but then again I had good teachers.

My GPA is dying :cry::cry::cry::cry: ....

I need any J1 (summer Session) course 3.00 or 6.00 credits, that's an easy A

J1 session starts May 07 - June 1st.

I'm new to Yorku, just transferred from a different Uni. and advisor here is useless and careless, doesn't offer any support.. She hates her job, apparently .
I tried to register for some courses that I found interesting, but they're only for major students.

Please any suggestions?

They were slower this year probably because of higher applications for summer osap.

check this out:http://www.yorku.ca/sfs/services/tracker/
and click SUMMER 2012 OSAP.

I'm pretty sure most of our osap statuses will be updated someday next week.

Which program were you in from the other university you transferred from? Was it itec related? You were probably frustrated with the amount of work thrown at you in your first year since you did not have a good background in itec.
Study harder!!!! Upgrade some of your grades this summer. If you do not have a good understanding of your year 1 itec courses, chances are you'll end up screwing up even more in the upper year courses.

I was in IT too, that's not my issue. My issue is that there's no ITEC short summer courses (May-June) but my gpa is very low. Can anyone tell me if there's a short J1 summer course that's considered relatively an easy A?

or

I would not recommend accelerated sections unless you want to upgrade your final grade for a course.

For example,

ADMS 3300 (business stats II) has several sections for SU and only one section for s1. Why are there many SU sections than s1? Its going to be extremely difficult to absorb the course content (esp. for stats) in less than a month. Ideally, s1 is for people who have a fair amount of knowledge from the course already and want to redo the exam - simply to boost their grade.

I dont think there are any easy itec courses, sorry. Unless, if your lucky and you get a really easy professor.

Currently a Ryerson student with only 3 credits needed. However I have run into troubles with my courses (failing). I would like to know some information in transferring to York. I am currently in the business accounting program but I have rather become disillusioned with the hurdles put forward by Ryerson to complete said education. I've been a part-time student for the past year and a half if that helps.
