This is actually quite interesting and may be a good case to buy a newer fridge or throw out that REALLY old one in your parents' basement. It also helps the power grid so that we don't have to pay more or suffer outages!

From the site:

Retire that old inefficient fridge and
start saving money on your electricity
bills today!
Take advantage of free in-home
pickup and recycling – a $110 value.
Plus...receive $30 cash back for
being an energy-efficient customer!
Call 1-866-901-7353 or visit
www.conservationbureau.on.ca

Qualification:

• At least 5 years old
• 10 cubic feet or larger (mini refrigerators do not qualify)
• Plugged in and in working order at the time of pickup
Multi-residential buildings do not qualify.

update:

And, it looks like the program is only available in Barrie, Mississauga, Timmins, Kingston, St. Catharines, Windsor, and the Hamilton/Niagara Region (http://www.refrigeratorretirement.com/)

Anyone know what the definition of "Multi-residential buildings do not qualify" means?

Do individual condo-owners qualify?

Update: Looks like no.... The FAQ states "The refrigerator must be located in a single dwelling home, townhouse, or four-plex building."

I don't believe so. The only real requirement as I understood it was that the fridge needs to have the motor running. It doesn't need to "work". I am going through the same thing at this time. Just need to verify that the fridge I replaced will turn on (which i'm sure it does).

I checked out the Refrigerator Retirement Program website and could not find anything about the $30 cash back. Does anyone know any details about the cash back?

Program ends Sept 30.

I'll give someone $30 for a working fridge (fairly newish) in the East GTA. Mine just broke... PM me. Anyways...

For people paying to get rid of their Fridges... Can't you just call the Garbabge pickup people and get them to take your old broken appliances at no charge? I got an old broken freezer and mini-fridge taken... just had to call in advance. All I had to do was take the door off the fridge and put it on the curb.

Not only do you get 30 bucks for your fridge, but you also get the satisfaction of knowing it's being disposed of properly (ie. not just dumped in a landfill, refrigerant disposed of properly, etc).

Not exactly the goal of the program, but maybe people looking for a cheap fridge can use someone else's for 30 bucks!

For people in the Laval area of Montreal, there is a $75.00 program, and it does not appear to be limited to first 1000 people like the econofrigo.com one.

A quick summary since the page is in french :

Available for people with postal codes starting with :
H7A, H7B, H7C, H7E, H7G, H7H, H7J, H7K, H7L, H7M, H7N, H7S
(Residences East of Highway 15 ?)
Call (450) 662-FRIGO to arrange pickup.

Conditions for the $75 dollars is the fridge must work : produce cold air.
The check is from Hydro Quebec.

If you're doing it to get the warm and fuzzies about doing your part for the environment or helping to reduce hydro, forget it.

The reality is, these units are not recycled, they are sold to appliance recyclers who fix 'em up, and re-sell them. So they never really leave the grid.

You're better off selling your fridge privately for $50, or whatever u can get for it, presumably over $30.

And the appliance recyclers give them $50, net cost is $25, and Hydro Quebec gets the good press. Its all optics folks.

What the heck is $75 going to get you towards a new fridge?
The average 18cu.ft fridge at Future Shop is $800+ tax.

Better off selling privately and buying fridge with gift card program.

Good luck.

NO ONE buys used refridgerators more than 7 years old. The best you will be able to do is get a used appliance vendor to pick it up for free. And even that requires luck.

I recently upgraded my fridge so I know this.

The only way I was able to even get rid of the old one without paying a disposal fee was to donate it to a charity, who I assume gives them to families in need. No used appliance person would even spend the time picking it up because they said it would not be woth the cost in gasoline and time spent.

See, the thing is, if they go out there and pickthat thing up, and they can't sell it, they have to pay big bucks to dispose of it properly (due to the coolant). They can't even sell it for scrap without paying that fee.

Ovens seems to be much more sale-able than fridges, I got 50 bucks plus free pickup for my 10 year old oven. I assume this is because they don't ever have to deal with the coolant issue, so even if they can't sell it they can at least recoup their costs by selling the scrap and parts.

Sure if you want top of the line. But if you just want a basic model it's nowhere near that.

We got our GE fridge from FS for $499. It is energy star and everything. Sure it doesnt have a water dispensor and ice maker (who uses that **** anyway? filtered water for me thanks), or a TV in the door, but it looks and works great and is miles ahead of our 80's fridge.

$75 off of $500 bucks is a pretty large percentage.

For those in Toronto who want to get rid of appliances and don't care about the $30 bucks you can always call the city and they will send a truck for FREE. If I remember correctly you call waste disposal cust service and ask for "scrap metal pickup" or something along those lines. They tell you the date of pickup and you make sure all of your metal is at the curb. Make sure the doors are taken off the appliances for safety. In the last 3 years we have done this a couple of times.

And for anyone in Windsor, just call 311 and the city will come get it for free too. You dont have to take off the doors though ;)

that's true...
i just call the city up and they come pick up my old fridge and washer machine plus some old electric scraps for free
no need to pay anything just call them up
i don't know if they require take off the door or not but while we bring the fridge up it was too heavi and hard to move so we take off the door for easy moving

I'd disagree... Older refrigerators are bought all the time for beer fridges, cottages, rent houses, etc. I personnaly am looking for two right now, one for my cottage and one for the mother-in-law.

...and if you are just looking to get rid of a fridge...

Another good place to get rid of a fridge, and do a little good, is at a website called freecycle. A lot of low-income and needy individuals will gladly take a free fridge of your hands.

You post a fridge for free on RFD, it would be gone within the day.

how about toronto, the city where 95% of canadian people live, do they have a moneyback program?
Sorry to burst your bubble - I know those in the GTA like to often think they are the centre of the universe (:P ), but according to StatsCan the GTA only comprizes about 14% of the population of the country.

If you live in Ottawa, it looks like it's better to call the phone # from the Conservation Bureau instead of the Hydro Ottawa # as the latter does not offer the $30 cash back (but does give you a free powerWise pack: a couple of CFLs and an LED nightlight).

However, note the Hydro Ottawa promotions separately have one for a free powerWise pack if you call and qualify. "Retail value: $20", street value: about $5.

Looks like Mississauga residents are SOL. If you click Hamilton/Niagara and then the "About the Program", you will see the $30 mentioned. I guess Hydro Mississauga is too cheap. Oh well, just keep using that old energy sucking beast.

They said the fridge has to be clean or they won't take it, and that the fridge should be tested before they take it away. How clean does it have to be? Super clean, as in ever little stain? Or just generally clean as it's not horribly stinky or messy?
