Computer won't turn on

During power outages, I remove the power cord from the wall... and lately I have had issues turning it back on - the power button did nothing, and then just suddenly worked anywhere up to 30 mins after plugging power back in.

Now my problem is, I turned off my computer last night and then immediately tried to turn it back on and it did not work. What could be causing the power button to simply not work? I'm not sure where to start to try looking for problems...

Check the power supply by feeling if the fan work. It could be the power button that don't work well anymore.

What I do is remove the side panel to listen if I can see a light on the motherboard. I would also remove the front panel, if possible, to see if you can push the on/off on the case. But that can differ from case to case.


Others might have other clues.

I was thinking the power button could be loose or something...

I have the antec sonata II. When power is on, the LED on my motherboard is no. No fans are going or anything, and.. they wouldn't until its turned ON.

Some way I could "send a turn on signal" directly to the motherboard? Side panel is off but I am not sure about any front panel coming off... the power button area internally is hard to get to.

I've heard of weird problems with power so I wouldn't rule anything out.

Have you tried pluggint it into a different outlet?

I'm guessing that you're not running it through a UPS, but what about a surge protector? Have you tried using different surge protectors?

Just a few ideas - it could be nearly anything. To narrow it down to your hardware you'd probably have to try it with a UPS to make sure that it really is getting the proper amount of power.

I moved it to another outlet on the other side of the room... nothing

I took out my 1gb of ram which was the last hardware I installed (have 2gb total) andddd nothing

I was tried running it through 2 surge protectors and one directly from the outlet. Plug it in, hear high pitched noise and a led light on the motherboard comes on.

Do you hear the hard drive running? Better yet, can you boot from a floppy or CD? If it look like their running, it may be the video card unless it's onboard video you have. It's just to see if power supply work ok. You could remove cards(ie sound card) or unplug the HD(power and IDE). Keep it barebone to test thing.

It could be the motherboard :mad: or just the power button. It's hard to debug online like that and I don't want to make it worst. ;)

Take it to a friend who can help you or a shop( :( )? It may be quicker that way.

i'm 90% sure its the power supply.. if you were not running it through a surge protector it is most likely damaged

my friend has the EXACT same problem.. Antec Sonata II case and his won't turn on either but his motherboard's LED is on... if you have a spare power supply try it.. im very sure its that.. I'm going to get a power supply for him tomroow and see if hte problem is fixed... if it is. .then 100% ur problem is the same thing

The sonata II came WITH the power supply... is there some EASY way to try another power supply without fully removing the old and installing the new?

Look how it's connected and place the second power supply on the floor or table with the minimum(mb, harddrive, cdrom/floppy). That's what I do when this happen so that I don't have to unscrew the other one.

Yes I have the sonata 11 and the power supply konked out on me and that was after 3 months they are made of crap .I would buy from them again.
Had to change it . Mine did the same as yours, it would not start . You will have to buy another power suppy and reinstall all the wiring . Have fun
