Audi to offer RS8 with R10's diesel V12?

Audi may be planning to build a high-performance version of its A8 luxury sedan with a powerful TDI diesel motor, according to a report in Blogo.it's automotive section. According to the Italian website, the car — called RS8 — will use the same TDI engine as the highly successful Audi R10 TDI race car. Output may be slightly detuned from the R10's 650 horsepower. Further details were not available.

i think it would be pretty insane!!!

insanely good that is
hehe

i would be interested to see what sort of fuel economy will come from this monster on the RS8

i have a feeling that RS8 will be a hell of a car with such high torque and HP AND fuel economy

the problem is will the diesel engine pass the emission test for the 5 key states in US and also Canada?

I hope they can make it run on bio-diesel too. 800 ft lbs torgue AND the exhaust smells like Mcdonalds.

I hope they can do a disel in the S4. Dreamcar!

they dont have a high performance small diesel engine used in racing yet

so it would have to be specially developed

so the new RS8 would cost like what? $200,000?

they probably won't import them into Canada.

actually the SR4 is on audicanada.ca!!

They'd have to detune it a lot if they want to fit a reasonably small and light transmission in that car. 811 lb-ft is getting out of the comfort zone of a few HD truck transmissions (Allison 1000 can only handle around 550 lb-ft and it's massive). They'd also have to do something creative to get 50-state compliance, even the Mercedes Bluetec doesn't quite make it at the moment. Should be very interesting to drive if they ever produce it though.

Wow it is.

I heard there's a long backorder list. I wonder how long??

yeah very true
i was surprised to hear that the bluetec didnt pass the 5 key states
MB has been saying its the cleanest diesel engine ever with that liquid thing...

and i guess they would really have to find a good transmission for it eh
well when it comes to pioneering auto technology and engineering, i have faith in Audi/Buggati
im sure they can come up with something

and even though if this car only shows up in europe, im sure there will be movies be made with this car in it

btw its RS4 not SR4

The EPA didn't allow the urea exhaust treatment because of concerns over customers having to refill the tank. Hopefully they will change their minds and if they do, the Bluetec shouldn't have a problem. I believe it failed at NOx, requirements were something like .05 grams/mile and it put out .06 grams/mile.

Bluetec is the cheap method of cleaning emissions..

but ya.. EPA didn't like the whole "refillable" urea deal..

but supposedly, the regenerative cat system has passed.. its just about $800 more to outfit to the car..

it's basically a dual mode cat.. the engine runs rich, particulate gets trapped and CO2 gets converted to something more emission friendly.. and when it starts to get clogged up.. the engine goes into a "lean burn" mode and the extra heat from combustion plus the extra NOx goes to break down the particulate matter accumulated on the cat and cleans it.. when it detects it's clean again.. it goes back to normal rich operation.

strangely enough.. the VW CRD engines from europe don't pass american emission standards.. even with ultra low sulfer diesel. everyone has had to go back to the drawing board with their diesels.. emission regs are so strict, that it's now a big deal worthy of press release parties when engines pass..

so what is it about VW TDI engines that passes the tests in north america?

The current non-CR TDI's don't pass California emissions standards but still meets the regular NA standards. I believe that the standards will become more strict in the near future now that we have ultra low sulphur fuel. California and the EPA have always put more into reducing NOx, while European standards are a bit more lax on NOx and focus more on particulate matter.

The current RS cars already have enough Oomph to spank some 911's out there; I wonder what exotics they will chew up and spit out with those insane numbers. Gallardo, Modeno, etc ? Spanked by a very cool soccar mom.

well there isnt anything out there that can really compete with RS8 if they make one
unless the LS600HL?
or AMG S63?

*shrugs*

RS8 is still in the plans so anything can happen right now

thanx for clearing up the TDI issue, seftonm

The current A8 uses a detuned version of the Gallardo V10 motor, since Audi/VW owns Lamborghini.

I doubt Audi would use the Lemans motor in a production car. They might however steal the motor from the Murciélago (a 640 HP V12) and detune it so as not to compete with Lamborghini.

You think Audi is worried about the A8 competing with the Murciélago?

Oh, only 100 RS4? Is that each year? So if you wanted to buy one in 4 yrs, you'd have to go on the waiting list now? What about the S4? Is there a limited # already?

From what I read they are only bringing it this year and next. S4 not sure about production numbers, but I'm sure you could grab one when the time comes, unlike the RS4.

I don't think I'd spend 100k on a brand new RS4, hopefully depreciation hits hard on them.
