View Full Version : How to tell if the clutch is going?

What signs should I be looking for?
I've noticed of the last day that the clutch is a lot easier to push in now. The first 1/3 of the way does nothing at all. I'm not sure if it just took a few days for the clutch to get worked in because it hadn't been used in a while or if there is a problem with it. I hope it's not the latter but if it is ahh well, still a good price on the car I think

if it starts slipping, it's about to go.
meaning when u change gears and u are full off the clutch pedal, it's not disengaging.
watch your tachometre and you'll know.
or even when you're in gear, and u press the gas, it can slip and jus rev

hmmmm, mine isn't doing that. The clutch is just really really loose and it often doesn't want to go into gear, especially Reverse. I'm going to take it somewhere tomorrow I'm just not sure where teh best place would be. Hopefully the Petro shop knows what the issue is and they wont try to gauge me.
edit: When I first got the car the clutch was tight. It took a little pressure to put the peddle to the floor but now it goes down with almost no effort at all.

chekc your clutch fluid levels. you might just need to bleed your clutch lines or replace the master clutch cylinder.
whenever your gear doesn't want to go in:
1 . reclutch
or
2. slide into another gear and then go back to the intended gear.
ie. you want to go into first, it doesn't lock in, pull into 2 and push back into 1.

try to make the car go in 3rd or 4th gear....

You can do a stall test by letting out the clutch in 4th gear while on the brake. It should stall immediately, not struggle and then die. Or, on a highway merge, put the car in 3rd at low rpms, say 1200, and floor it close to or up to redline. If you notice your engine reving without the proper gain in speed, you have a problem.

-accelerate the car without aiding it with acc pedal
-check clutch fluids, you should see a floating ball when it is full
-if you have trouble changing gears, check your tranny fluid as well.
for integras, civics of that generation. you have to put the gear in 1st before going into reverse or else u will get a clunk noise. this goes along with alot of manual cars as well.. mainly, you dont have to put it in a foward gear before in reverse for sychro issues

Thanks guys it was the fluid. I mist have made a hole somewhere becaue it was fine one day, bad the next. Nothing gradual. I took it to the shop, got an oil change and told them to look at. I have classes right now so hopefully when I go to pick up the car there wont be any nasty surpises for me

if you feel your shifting is a little stiff, you can try switching to a synthetic transmission fluid. It will make your shifter move in and out of gears (at proper speeds, of course) like butter.
I usually test the clutch life when on the highway.. fullly engage in 4th, then dump it in 5th. The RPMs shouldnt fluctuate too high. I try not to do this often as I imagine it isnt the greatest thing for your car.. haha

Ive been told to slow down to second or third gear, and then shift into fifth. If you feel it 'lug' along, the clutch is still okay. If it revs up and smells/ smokes its slipping. Same idea as what others have said. I dont know about acuras that much, but as the clutch wears it is normal for the pedal to travel farther to engage. With some vehicles you can look underneath the drivers side and adjust the pedal for your engage points.
If you are having troubles getting it into gears, your synchros are wearing out. If you are trying to get it into reverse, put it into first or second then into reverse. Lots of older vehicles seem to do this and its pretty normal for reverse. I have been told that if you drive with your hand on or resting on your shifter all the time you will wear out your synchros faster.
Congrats on finding out it was only the fluid level being low, hopefully it isnt or wasnt anything serious.

On a standstill, if you shift to 4th and it boggles. Then clutch ok. That's what my mechanic told me long ago.
If you shift and it slips. Have it checked. Don't drive too long. Or else you gotta change the whole clutch. $$$
Yeah check fluids and see if cable doesn't have too much slack.
If those are fine, then clutch are worn. Need new clutch.
