lancer ralliart queries!!

Hey everyone, jus got an 06 graphite grey lancer ralliart (toronto, canada)... got a nice deal on it ...2000 dollars off...not to mention the great warranty, 0% financing and 1 yr free sirius satellite radio...so pumped to be part of lancer nation...great to see that i have a unique car unlike the thousands of mazda 3's and honda civics out there...i have a few questions that need answering...all of ur opinions are welcome...thanks in advance.

1) do you guys follow the 'severe' maintenance schedule religiously? 6000 kms or 3 months whichever comes first? i am not gonna put a lot of kms on the car rite away so is it okay to take the car 4-5 months every time?

2) do i have to wait 500 or 1000 kms before i can pass somebody on the highway or go more than 90 km/h? ( got that from a friend who owns a tsx)

3) wat kinda fuel do you guys use for ur ralliarts? i plan to use shell's regular unleaded fuel..is that ok? are there any advantages to using higher octane ones?

4) i've heard bout using detergents in the gas tank? if so how often and wat brand do u guys recommend?

5) how often shud i wash the car? wat bout the underbody? (i got underbody protection from mitsubishi...is that enuff?) can i wash the car at any automatic carwash?

this is my first car so i have a lot of noob questions...driving this car is so much fun so far...altho i was debating bout leasing or financing...i mean reading that vehicle manual was depressing for me...so many things to maintain...so many things that cud get screwed up...but overall i think i made the rite choice...i plan to drive the ralliart for the next 10 yrs...hopefully it co-operates with me :)

Congrats on the Ralliart. I hope you got the manual transmission :)
I got mine about 6 months ago and it's a great car, highly underrated.
Kind off mad that you got a much better deal than me, but this car was my first choice so I'm still happy.

I don't drive a lot of KM's either, maybe less than 8K per year so I plan on doing the standard oil change about once a year.

There's no problem going 90km/h on a brand new car. Just avoid high rev's (although I know some people might disagree with this) for the first 500km. I also heard that Mitsubishi cars are already broken-in but I have no idea if this is true or not.

Use regular fuel since the engine was tuned for it. There should be no major gains in using premium fuel.

Chip the car, install an intake, you can smoke the RSX-S no problem.

I was seriously considering that car. Good price, decent power, pretty good looking IMO.

Yes, drop in about $1000 worth of mods and you'll be quicker than a lot of other cars out there. Even stock, still pretty quick.

Good car, underrated, great finance terms, unbeatable warrantee.

Thought about getting it, but didn't for the safety aspect and the annoying blinding red fonts on the dash. Ended up with an impreza.

I heard you are suppose to drive it a various speeds at first to break it in. Like not be at 100 consistently.

Changing the oil once a year is VERY dangerous.

Oil does break down over time (regardless of how many KMs you put on the car) and becomes FAR less effective at lubricating engine parts. This can become even worse in the winter when oil needs to be at its best during cold starts. Over time you may begin to actually burn oil as the piston seals break down.


On a side note, I plan on getting an 05/06 Ralliart within the next 6ish or so months. :)

Nope, don't bother. The only 'harm' is your wallet will be 10-15% lighter.

Break-in, just go easy on it, don't floor it, and don't brake too hard

Don't put any other stuff in the gas tank. Not much stuff out there actually works and might actually harm your car. Fuel Injector cleaner is the only stuff I've ever put into the tank.

I'd change the oil every six months if you don't have high kilometers

Unless you have a chip that remaps your ECU timing/ignition curves standard 87 octance will run just fine. Higher octane may possibly hamper performance under some conditions.

who said u cant go more than 90km? thats just old false tails that might have been true 5o years ago. Drive it like you would drive it during those 10 years, dont baby the car...

first of all, congrats on your new car
lancer is such an awesome car thats well proportioned and solid looking, not to mention the potential it has

i know that the EVO VIII has a crazy and seriously severe maintenance schedule, i think lancer wouldnt be as bad

i think 4~5 months is good if u dont drive much
that also depends on the condition that u r driving it
break it in easy for the first one thousand KM
im for one that praises gentle breakin period, that doesnt mean dont go over 90km/h
just dont redline the car for the first 1000km and it should be fine
many ppl think otherwise and think that the seals needs the high temp to properly seal in and so on...
id make sure to change oil every 6000km

you will not benefit from higher octane, it will just be harder to burn the fuel
high octane is all about at what temperature and compression the fuel will burn
as said by warpdrive, 94 octane has no benefit for your car except it will lighten up your wallet

there are injector cleaners such as BG44K or Techron by Chevron that works well, also Seafoam
but u dont really need to worry about it until the car is around 90,000km IMHO

as for washing the car, sometimes once a week is enuf
depends on where u live and how hard the water is
also dont take ur car to automatic car washes, they tend to create swirls on the car because the brushes are not gentle and fine enough

if you want to baby your car, learn to wash it yourself
using microfibre or sheep skin mitts and so on
theres quite a bit to learn about detailing cars actually
and if you want your car to look like show cars, you will have to dish out some money or learn to do it yourself

I think the OP stated that he/she got the Lancer in grey...

anyways congrats on your new car, nice colour choice! The Lancer is very underrated (as someone mentioned in the thread) and it's a good time to pick one up now with the rates being so low! The only 'low point' of this car is the interior though. A little bit dated IMO.
