where to download LAME audio encoding software?

i did many searches only to find that wen i download it it always comes in some weird format that i can't use to install. is it possible that im always downloading the source code instead of the actual program? anyway, where do i download it, and can i use it with iTunes?

If you're using a Mac, it's probably why. LAME isn't so popular on that platform (probably because Macheads think Itunes is the greatest thing under the sun).

What you want is the 3.97 beta 3 (don't worry about the 'beta' tag).

Don't know how it works for Macs, but you can get a LAME Itunes plugin for the Mac version. Just do a search for it. I don't think there's any secure ripper for Macs, so you might as well stick with Itunes if you're using it already. I believe the Itunes plugin lets you use the --alt-presets.

haha im not using a mac... i wish... im on windows xp home. i just have that as my avatar cus i think macs are superior.

LAME is a codec, which works only as a command-line application, thus you need to use some other program to make it easier, for example foobar2000, EAC, dBpowerAMP and many others. Unfortunately no iTunes with LAME.

3.90.3 has long been replaced as the recommended version by the dudes at Hydrogen Audio (which some of the LAME developers contribute to, including Dibrom, who I think was responsible for 3.90.3). It's only those moron "elite" groups who think they know more than the developers of LAME that insist on 3.90.3.

I use RazorLame. The dude updated the ini file so that it doesn't give errors when using the later versions of LAME (not that the error ever affected the quality ... it was just an nuisance).

There's actually other versions of LAME, such as lame_enc.dll and a LAME ACM (a true Windows internal codec), which isn't command line, but LAME.EXE is the most used.
