Hmmm. Coupon says that it cannot be used with most insurance programs. I wonder why... Anyway, Walmart Vision Centers have a good selection at good prices. I just got a pair of frameless glasses with Essilor Crizal lenses for $250. Walmart was even cheaper than Costco.

Yeah. I think Wal-mart is great for prices and the glasses aren't bad. Just got mine with the clip on suglasses and transition lens. They're great
Lenscrafters I think aren't great for quality. I once got them there and didn't find it comparable to what I got from Iris, although they are cheaper. And you always have to wonder when they can make your glasses in an hour when others take at least a few days. I don't think I'll ever go back to Lenscrafters again. I will go back to Wal-mart for my next pair.

I disagree....not on quality but on service. I have been wearing hardcore glasses for 15 years (heh, damn computers making my eyes worse!), and have to upgrade my lenses every 2 years. Last week I went to a Hakim store looking to buy eyeglasses and contact lenses. The two "busy" ladies in the store told me that "the contact lens fitter is on vacation". So I say, "So what do I do?". Their response: "We don't know, but you can't buy contacts today, only eyeglasses". And then they go back to their little chat with eachother. Didn't even refer me to another location, didn't even remember that I wanted to buy eyeglasses too (I guess they forgot).
I always bought from lenscrafters (pricey but a 30% CAA discount, wow!), but my last pair was from Wal_mart. NEVER AGAIN! The coating was peeling, the frames were crap (they were $300 glasses!). So I went back to LensCrafters, got my eyeglasses from there, excellent experience, as usual!
Obviously Hakim doesn't want my money, and Wal-mart is just low quality. By the way, my contact lenses were MUCH cheaper at Zellers than anywhere else (including Wal-Mart), and a good brand name (Cooper Vantage).

they have the promo instore w/o any coupon or limit..just need to purchase a set of lenses + frames...I was there...on the other hand.. I went to Sears optical..they seem cheaper on every count (frames and lenses) and they care a good selection of both (my glasses cost 400+ so its worth shopping around every two years).

And you always have to wonder when they can make your glasses in an hour when others take at least a few days.
It's only because they have labs onsite while the smaller opticals have to send them out to get made.
If the lenses donot have to be surfaced (finished lenses) a good lab tech can do them in under 20 min.

The last glasses I bought were from The Bay Optical. The service was good, the frame was inexpensive (and titanium quality), but the lenses were a bit pricey.
The glasses before that I bought at City Optical. Excellent frame and moderately priced. The salesperson was nice and experienced - really looked at what would be the best fit for my face and hair. Unfortunately they closed that store and the other one I went to didn't have the same service. The frame and lens are still looking great after 5 years (it's just that my vision has changed a bit).
I've checked out Lenscrafters before and found them too pricey - even more than usual. I wouldn't go to WalMart, Zellers or Costco or any other big box store because they are not specialized optical stores. I think it pays out to pay for good service and good quality glasses: you aren't getting them every day, after all.

1. XX% off of anyprice. Glasses have no MSRP. Ads with percentages off are like airline tickets with no government fees included. oh don't forget fuel surtaxes or was that scratch coats.
2. 2 for 1 glasses. Anyone who buys pizza knows this deal sucks everytime.
3. exchange warranty vs replacement warranty. Some stores sell frames that are name brands but discontinued so if you break it you get to choose a frame that is similar and not the one you originally bought.
My advice, find the specs you (or your wife) wants, and let your fingers do the walking!

I agree with you. call around.. lenscrafters, even with all of their coupons, probably cost twice as much as the others.
In vancouver, I'd recommend Opticana or Tru Value (Broadway). For contacts, I'd suggest Skylight on Robson/Landsdown

Has any consumer writer or smart shopper done comparison shopping with all these misleading "specials"? I hope that I don't have to drive to a dozen stores just to get the bottom-line price for high-index lenses with non-designer frames.
Since each store has different frames available, you can't really phone a store to compare "apples to apples." Online eyewear stores seem to have great prices, but I would want to try out the frame first instead of buying sight unseen.

Where is a good place to get really thick lenses? Due to my RFD addiction, my lenses are, well, almost half a centimeter thick. :( And then everywhere I go, they add all these no reflection, super thin, and whatever things to make it more expensive. The lenses alone cost more than $200. :( Guess I can blame Michael Dell and IBM for that. :D
Any good tips to lower prescriptions? (Not to relieve eye fatigue)

I've got 2 pairs of glasses from Costco. These were bought two years ago and at that time it was the best price I could find. I've got the Nikon Ultrathins and also a pair with the Essilor Ultrathins. Both are fitted with Nikon Titanium frames - superlite! Service-wise, I'm happy with Costco. They will adjust your frames for you, etc. etc for free (at least in the few times that I've visited them). Quality-wise, the lenses and frames are excellent. No problems with them yet. As for deals, Costco usually has a coupon for around $50 off a pair of frames and lenses - I usually find the coupon out around the summer/fall time. Insurance at work pays for a part of the frames and lenses too, so I usually end up paying around $80 for a complete pair of frames and lenses (it'll be more than $80 if you get the Nikon ultrathin lenses).

You could try this place (http://www.optical4less.com/) where I'm probably getting mine next month. Some of their thin lenses are supposed to be thinner than the Featherweights and obviously much cheaper. There's an ongoing thread advertising them over at the Something Awful forum and most people posting there seem to be happy with their glasses.

Read an optometrist's Price Check (http://drworkman.optometry.net/events/index.asp?action=Edit&event_id=3207) on all the misleading gimmicks of eyewear stores.
For example, Sears has a 2-for-$149 plastic gimmick with same Rx, 50-70% off lenses, and unadvertised $40 lenses for kids. IVision (http://www.ivision.ca/promos.htm) has a 2-for-1 which can be different Rx, a $25 online coupon, and a $219 "special" for kids. A consumer will need to bring a computer to the store just to be able to figure out which of the gimmicks is the best deal! :(

I am shopping around for eyeglasses for myself and a preschooler. While it is virtually impossible to compare "apples to apples" exactly, here is an idea of how much prices can vary even for a child's eyeglasses: polycarbonate lenses, anti-scratch coating, and least expensive frames. Anti-glare coating is unnecessary for kids.
1) Walmart: $88-$139. $40 for lenses; $30 for anti-scratch coating; frames are $18-$69 (1-year warranty). The warranty will be honoured even if your child keeps breaking her eyeglasses. You can choose from among four different colours for the eyeglass case.
2) Sears Optical: $99-$139. $25 for lenses, $15 for warranty, frames >=$59.
3) Hakim: >=$148 for 2 pairs. The store had no price stickers! :twisted: Whatever price the salesperson decides to quote you for the frame is what you are supposed to pay for 2 pairs of kid's eyeglasses, plus you pay $25-$29 for each coating. One-year warranty is only for a one-time replacement.
4) Loblaws Superstore: >=154. $70 for lenses; $65 for Trio anti-glare coating with 2-year warranty (unnecessary?); frames for $19-99.
5) Optometrist: ~$167. Ask how much are his dispensing fees and wholesale cost of frames.
6) IVision: $356 or free if the adult eyeglasses I am buying is more expensive.
eBuddy
Jul 29th, 2004, 06:46 PM
Below are the price ranges for adult eyeglasses with high-index lenses.
1) Walmart: >=$217-$338. $199 for Essilor 1.67 index lenses including Trio ("Tough As Nails") coating with two-year warranty. Frames have one-year warranty and cheap ones start at $18, B.U.M. are $10 off at $99, and 100% Titanium frames are $139.
2) Optical4Less (http://optical4less.com/?SSAID=111148/): U$143 or ~C$200: U$49 for Titanium or Magnetic Clip-on frames including coatings; U$59 extra for high prescription; U$35 for 1.67 aspheric lens DAGAS; U$8 for shipping.
3) Loblaws Superstore: $284-$405. $120 for Gentex 1.6 medium index or $200 for Essilor TL167 high index lenses; $65 Trio coating; frames $19-$220. Superflex frames are $79 (wholesale $27?) and so-called "Titanium" frames are $99.
4) Hakim (http://www.hakimoptical.ca): >=$251-$307. $219 for 1.6 index lenses including coating; frames $139-$219; ask for 30% discount.
5) Sears Optical (http://www.sears.ca): >=$328. $288 for lenses including coating; frames >=$79.99, 50 or 70% off.
6) Optometrist: $350-$450. Confirm that frames are sold at wholesale cost, but there is a dispensing fee of at least $90 and lenses are not wholesale.
7) Shorney's Optical (http://www.shorneysoptical.com): $325-$369+. $300 for 1.67 index lenses including coating. Frames >=$69 & $25 sale.
8) IVision (http://www.ivision.ca): $371 for 2 pairs, can be different Rx, e.g., child. $232 TL16 lenses (medium index?); Sutton & Fasio frames >=$139; NO coating. 30-day satisfaction guarantee.
9) Lenscrafters (http://www.lenscrafters.ca): >=$475. $335 for 1.67 Pentax or Essilor lenses including Ultra coating. Frames >=$140, Featherwates Titanium $220. When I asked what discounts were available, the salespeople lied that there were none. :evil: Even with the $125 coupon or the CAA 30% discount, Lenscrafters was still the most expensive.

9) Lenscrafters (http://www.Lenscrafters.ca): >=$264. $195 for Featherwate lenses, frames >=$69. Assuming you can use the $120 coupon, a kid's eyeglasses will cost >=$139.

That is why I wrote down the various measurements as I was shopping at all the expensive local stores. It was then easy to see that the glasses you are ordering online have similar measurements as to what you tried on. The local chains fool suckers with 2-for-1, $125-off and other gimmicks to get you to waste a lot of money.

I bought 2 pairs from Optical4less.com This is a great place to buy from but you risk a little by not trying them first. My pair from them was half rimless, made in japan. Extremely good quality at first appearance. I got 2 pairs for 145CAN, landed. I would definitely recommend them as being a great cheap source. I even submitted them to my insurance, but have not heard back yet.
I can't believe RFDer's would even think of a coupon from Lenscrafters. Next thing you're going to suggest is a GM Visa card.

I was just about to post about how Lenscrafters doesn't have any high-index lenses - only polycarbonate. That was the case when I got my first pair of glasses from them (4 years ago). Do not buy polycarbs - visual not as good, and they scrath easily. IMO, Lenscrafters is the worst optical store.

i agree lens-trappers really did a number on me a few years ago charging me 449$ for a pair with DKNY frames. I went to Hong Kong and got a similar DKNY pair for $60 dollars believe it or not!!!!...and that is not a typo and that $US60 included the frame!!! After 5 years I am still wearing them now. If anyone is going to Hong Kong or Taiwan, get a pair there it is soooo much cheaper.
