View Full Version : How many permutations to a Vehicle Key cut/Frequency for Keyless Entry/Remote Garage

Was chatting with a bud yesterday who mentioned that nowadays Manufacturers of vehicles are lowering the range of keyless entry devices because of this possible issue of opening up a couple other cars in the vicinity..?
Now it spurred an interesting question which is among the same line of model/make...how many different ways are there to cut a key?
To take it a step more...how many different frequencies do keyless entry devices use? as well as Garage Openers (but not really interested in this as much as the previous two points).
Are we talking a terribly large amount of possible combinations?? Or...are we talking 10,000? or 5,000? or 1000, or 500, or...dare I suggest less than 200 different ways to cut a key/configure a keyless entry device??

I bought a workbench from Crappy Tire one day and need to load it into my car. So I left the table on the curb just outside Crappy Tire and ran to my car to drive it to the curb. When I got in the car and started it, it occured to me that someone had moved the seat. Then, I realized that the interior of the car is a different color. I looked around and realized that this isn't my car. My car is 3 cars further down the row.
At the same time, the owner of this car came back. I was quite embarrassed and explained the whole situation to him. It turns out his car keys work in my car too.
He was quite nice about it and helped me load the workbench into my car.

WOW...that is scary, DUDE...I didn't realize my friend had any shred of substance...but I guess it's real...lol
These days...take a corolla (dad's car) for an example...the care are friggin similar to the last T. With no customiations, you'd have to be quite attuned to in the circumstances of the story at hand to notice that it wasn't your own car.

I drive a cheap car. The dash color on these cars is the same regardless of interior color.

And, of course, unless the color of the dash board is really different, who would pay attention to it before enter? Especially, in a rush. One might think the color difference is caused by lighting.
